top six stories of the last two weeks

  1. Perros del Mal hyped a big surprise for their 01/01 show, and delivered Head Hunter I. Not a big surprise. Box Y Lucha’s cover story said Averno was actually offered the surprise spot, and turned it down. Averno, in a CMLL.com interview denied it – by saying that if he leaves, he wouldn’t be sneaky about it. Not really a denial.
  2. Hombre Bala Jr. and Super Halcon Jr. unmasked long time opening card luchadors Rayo Tapatios on New Year’s Day. The two had been a masked duo for over 20 years, always tecnicos until they started to set up this feud. This was usual CMLL practice of luchadors near the start of their career defeating those near the end of theirs.
  3. Histeria, Alebrije, and Cuije changed their names (and looks) to Morphosis, Kraneo, and Mije. The first two are said to have previously used those names. Morphosis says CMLL has asked them to change from their current (potentially AAA owned) names, but they’ll continue to use their previous names on indies and still believe they own them. Fellow Invasor Psicosis has said he has not been requested to change his name.
  4. Terrible defeated Rush to win the vacant CMLL Heavyweight Championship.
  5. NJPW’s CMLL FantasticMania lineups were announced. Sombra will defend his title versus Voldor in what might be the best match of the year. Mascara Dorada defends his title versus NJPW’s Kushida.
  6. Monterrey based wrestler Estrella Dorada Jr. was arrested on charges of kidnapping, robbery and conspiracy.
