1) Dark Devil & Guerrero 2000 b Rolling Boy & Tonatiuh
Said to be not good.
2) Bugambilia del Norte, Dragon Fly, Saruman jd Alan Extreme, Imposible, Keshin Black
Judges decision for the tecnicos. (So this is going to be a regular thing!) Bugambilia is back here for the first time since January.
3) Centurión, Dinamic Black, Golden Magic b Carta Brava Jr., King Drako, Polifacético
Carta Brava Jr. was strechered out after taking a knee to the chest.
4) Damián 666, Halloween, X-Fly b el Ángel, Máscara Año 2000 Jr., Pantera
Angel, Mascara Ano 2000 replaced Angelico and Veneno. Halloween was eliminated, but snuck back in to steal Mascara’s mask, setting up Damian’s winning pin.
5) Oficial 911 b Multifacético [mask]
Multifacetico, continuing to wrestle as a rudo, won the first fall, but Oficial 911 came back to win the last two and the mask. The last was via a second rope powerbomb. 911 was assisted by new Oficial Spartans. Multifacetico is Jonathan Pacheco, from Mexico State, 7 years a wrestler. Magia Negra turns up as a name as early as 2003 in Acapulco, which matches up.

Building said to be 3/4s full.

SuperLuchas embed a handheld of the match (not BTJr.) If you’d prefer to wait, Tercera Caida says it’ll air next week on IWRG’s TV show.

CMLL (SUN) 07/17/2011 Arena Coliseo [CMLL, La Catedral]
***Arkangel 25th Anniversary Show***
1) Starman b Camaleón, Halcon Magico, Bobby Zavala, Kato, Trueno, Robin, Ultimo Samurai, Warrior Steel, Cocolores, Trox, Flamita, Canelo Casas, Freesbe, Yago, Principe Azteca
Referee was Teddy, an indy referee who works (or worked?) for Perros del Mal. Kind of a Royal Rumble style match, but with 2 new wrestlers every 90 seconds. Order of entry was Freesbee & Starman, Canelo Casas & Flamita, Trox & Cocolores, Warrior Steel & Ultimo Samurai, Robin & Trueno, Kato & Bobby Zavala, and Halcon Magico (not Super Halcon – this one turned up in 2006 IWRG teaming with Tiger Kid) & Camaleon. No one was eliminated until the ring filled up. Guys were eliminating themselves by doing dives, including Magico moonsaulting to the floor. Final three were Camaleon, Flamita and Starman, Starman dumping Flamita for the win. Cesar says Flamita and Warrior Steel looked good, and didn’t like Robin and Cocolores comedy.
2) Dalys la Caribeña & Lady Afrodita b La Comandante & Mima Shimoda
Lady Afrodita is an Arkangel trainee, making her CMLL debut and getting her first win. One fall basic match.
3) Dr. X, Hooligan, Loco Max, Nitro, Yoshihashi b Cancerbero, Euforia, Pólvora, Raziel, Virus [cibernetico]
Absolutely no mention of what’s become of Skandalo. Order of elimination was Yoshihashi (via Virus), Virus (Hooligan), Hooligan (Raziel), Polvora (Tuareg distracted the refs so Dr. X could toss his own mask to Polvora for the DQ, hmmm), Loco Max (Cancerbero), Raziel (Nitro), Nitro (Cancerbero). That left Dr. X alone against Cancerbero and Euforia, but he beat Euforia and then the big man to take copa home for the Tuareg.
4) Arkángel de la Muerte, Ephesto, Shigeo Okumura b Mr. Cacao, Stuka Jr., Valiente
The Tuareg entered with Arkangel before the match, and Arkangel thanked everyone for supporting him. Rudos took 2/3. Arkangel pinned Mr. Cacao in the third fall for the win, then challenged for a mask match.
5) Delta, La Máscara, La Sombra DQ Atlantis, Mephisto, Volador Jr.
No Toscano again, Delta replacing him. Tecnicos took 2/3. Mephisto fouled Sombra for the pin.

Show was preceded by a lucha olimpico demonstration by Arkangel’s current students. I think the Flamita might not be the DTU Flamita.

Other News

LA Park beat Dr. Wagner to win Copa Mexicano in Tijuana. It only took six guys (the two other in the match and four from the rest of the show) to run in to get to a finish.

Dragon Rojo Jr. says he’s still not 100% due to his recent ankle injury. He’s cleared to wrestle, but trying all kinds of solutions, including visiting a stem cell treatment cetner in Guadalajara. Dragon Rojo calls himself Chocomil Lagunero, and says he’s working on a chocolate milk sponsorship.

Lucha in Japan

07/17 Lucha Fiesta:
3) AYUMI b Sexuis [X-LAW WOMEN] (7:23)

07/18 NJPW:
1) Masato Tanaka, Yujiro Takahashi (O), Jado, Gedo b Strong Man, Tomoaki Honma, Killer Rabbit A (X), Killer Rabbit B
2) Jushin Liger b Hector Garza (7:55) [non-title] – I think the idea is Garza was too heavy to challenge for the title.

Both guys are finished up and headed back to Mexico. Strong Man’s only in for a short while before heading back to Japan for the G1.

07/18 NOAH: (via Purolove.com)
1) Jack Evans b Genba Hirayangai (7:31)
3) Go Shiozaki [O] & Shuhei Taniguchi b Takuma Sano & Aerostar [X] – Aero is 0-2, but at least lost to the current heavyweight champ. No shame there.
5) Eddie Edwards & Delirious [O] b Ricky Marvin & Rocky Marvin [X] – team Marvin falls to 0-2 in the tournament, pretty much eliminated already.

Tournament matches kick off for the AA team tomorrow.

Sin Cara suspension’s affect on lucha libre

It’s cloudy right where I’m at right now, but it’s been a pretty illuminating day.

Sin Cara has been suspended by WWE for a violation of their drug policy. WON believes he failed a steroid test in early June. This has quite a ripple effect.

  • Sin Cara may not be staying with WWE. Don’t know any more than that, but the WON report mentions it as a possibility. WWE did seem to protect him at the PPV, but did not seem to protect him by releasing his real name. (Which I’ve already had to take off the wiki once, thanks.)

If Sin Cara left WWE, he’d be immediately scooped up by AAA. I’d presume they’ve got or are getting an offer ready for him right now. They’ve been planning for this since he went to WWE, just in case they had a chance. There’s almost no chance he’d return to CMLL, though he could do the independent thing for a while. His name is going to be an entire issue in itself, and there’s no telling what this will do to his image in Mexico. (Rey Misterio’s PED suspension appeared to have no long term affect on him.)

It’d be very easy for WWE to write off bringing in Mexican luchadors if Sin Cara left after this. They’re still going to want another Rey Misterio or a replacement one, but this would be a disaster of epic proportions and might sour WWE on at least reaching out of the country for a Latino wrestler.

I can’t believe Sin Cara and WWE are leaving, because they benefit from that relationship more than any other. But something needs to be fixed.

  • Averno is staying in CMLL – for a great deal longer, if he’s even still going. Don’t need Mistico’s opponent if Mistico isn’t going to be around for 30 days. He should be feuding with Sheamus when he returns, though WWE isn’t really consistent about those sorts of things, so maybe WWE doesn’t need him for longer. Since Averno’s whole purpose in WWE is to work with Sin Cara, he’s not going to be brought in if Sin Cara is gone, and Sin Cara might have lost the privilege of naming his favorite opponent.

It’s really great Averno has been awesome as a unmasked rudo in CMLL, because he may be one for a while to come. It’s also great that he hasn’t appeared to burn any bridges on the way out – he’s made every date, he’s made Mascara look good, and he’s added greatly to the program. CMLL would be a fool to punish him right now, and they know it, because they gave the Avernos the trios titles.

  • CMLL has known about his for a while. Maybe not known Sin Cara was suspended, but obviously known Averno was going to be around for a lot longer. And – they managed to keep it a secret this time! Good work, everyone!

(Things are finally starting to make sense. I’d like to thank billzero for his inspirational cat picture that got me thru the dark hours.)
