attendance guesses, other things I write about on a slow days

Prometo Lucha Libre writes about how this weekend was a strong one for Mexican lucha libre. Amongst the usual amusing spin, he has a good point.

Last year, TripleMania and Sin Salida drew 29,000 against each other. We do not have final attendance numbers, but they should be around the same number, maybe leaning a bit higher.

Last year’s CMLL show drew 14,000 with a lesser match on top (Taichi vs Maximo), but a lot of help from Rayo and the Dinamitas in the semimain and new rudo Volador facing off against Mistico for the first time in a while in a relevos increidble trios. This year’s show, which was a day before TripleMania but nothing besides a main event where the finish was out ahead of time, is estimated to have drawn the same number. That speaks well CMLL handled Mascara vs Averno feud.

I don’t have a number estimate for TripleMania, but it did seem like close to last year. AAA pushed the TNA feud strongly, but nothing on this show was (or could be) as historically significant as LA Park vs La Parka for the name. That was a layup, this card was more work, but work that paid off if the attendance is where we figure it is.

CMLL in Japan
NJPW 06/21/11: Hiroshi Tanahashi, KUSHIDA (O), Mascara Dorada b Brian Kendrick, Jado, Gedo (X) [J SPORTS CROWN, eightfinal]

Tanahashi/Kushida/Dorada have Bernard/Anderson/Liger in the quarters tomorrow. Since Bernard is getting the shot at Tanahashi next, and Kendrick attacked KUSHIDA after the match, I don’t like Team Dorada’s odds. Maybe he can steal a win from Liger. In the post match press conference, Dorada threw out challenges to both Devitt and Ibushi. Dare to dream.

That’s probably Nakamura’s last match. The tercera is about as random as you get. Maybe Dragon Lee  & Sensei can teach Rey Cometa some lucha libre karate. Mercurio’s back for the first time since early March.

  1. The CMLL attendance was with much higher ticket prices than last year too I’m guessing. Even with paying off Averno’s mask they had to have brought in more money this year.

  2. I attended Triplemanía. The attendance was about 90 % or maybe a little bit less, like Súper Luchas said.

  3. The Liger match was good, but the TAKA and Gedo matches kind of stunk. I am a little disappointed with the BOSJ Dorada we have seen so far.

  4. @Phil: Yeah I agree. Dorada has not looked good in the tournament. Dorada has yet to show himself to be any sort of complete worker so the Lyger match was exactly the way to book him. In every other match so far he’s been out of position many times and just looks like he’s working at a different pace than everyone else. I guess New Japan was happy with him though as the thought is already to bring him back for a long tour again this year. Not sure if CMLL will be okay with losing him once more.

Actually the Lyger match was the way I would have booked Mistico in the WWE for his first month or two. Just have him do non-stop spectacular dives to beat his opponents by countout. That way you hide him from having to work in the ring and he’s still getting over as a spectacular flyer.
