  1. So… how much impact is Mistico leaving actually going to have on CMLL and the Lucha scene? I mean, he seemed to be being pushed aside to make new stars, and his star power, unless I am completely mis-understanding some of Cubs reports, seemed to be dwindling, with a lot of fans turning off of him.

Of course, my understanding of the lucha scene is mediocre at best, which is why I am asking.

And was someone hinting earlier that Santo could be returning? Like… isn’t Santo the arch-nemesis of CMLL management?

  2. Mas Deporte 6.4
    Accion 8.1
    CMLL 3.3
    AAA 3.8
    RAW 8.2
    Smackdown 9.2
    Televisa Boxing 5.7
    Azteca Boxing 13.4

  3. Mistico is a big loss even though I don’t think they ever planned on using him in the main event at any of the major shows this year. It has been obvious for months that CMLL anticipated losing him at some point and started building around others.

I hope the CMLL press conference isn’t like those old Pena conferences after losing someone where he would hold up a piece of paper, and threaten a lawsuit and talk about owning someone’s gimmick.

  4. @Tim: If I mentioned ever time Sexi Star teased jumping to another promotion and then told someone how much she loves AAA, we’d be here all day.

@LLL: Mistico would’ve definitely gotten a major show main event somewhere along the year, just to keep him happy and not leaving town. (Arguable that they might have kept him around if they had just done Mistico/Psicosis.)

  5. @LUKIE: Mistico did still mean something as a draw. It was lesser, but it still mattered. Getting Mistico down the road was also a nice carrot to hold out to spot show promoters. The mainstream knows Mistico much better than they know Sombra or anyone else too.

It’s not near as much an effect as it would’ve been 3 or more years ago.

Santo and CMLL management are not on good terms, but Santo and Mistico were also not on good terms, and maybe CMLL and Santo can find some peace on their mutual dislike. Probably won’t work, but CMLL has to be more open to it than they were before.

  6. @Chris: Maybe someone who knows the details better than I can expand on it, but Santo figured out that they were trying to push Mistico as an updated version of Santo… in other words, gimmick infringement. From there, it became a money issue.

  7. In all seriousness, Alberto Del Rio winning the Royal Rumble should be on this list.

While WWE isn’t lucha, and it shouldn’t be included simply because ADR used to be Dos Jr., the effects of a former Mexican star winning the Rumble and headlining Mania can/will have long term effects on lucha business. Look at how many times Del Rio has been referenced in the Mistico threads…

  8. Gimmick infringement sounds like CMLL purposely made Mistico into a replica of Santo which isn’t exactly the truth. It’s just a simple case of Santo started to realize his time had passed and Mistico was the new mainstream star. When exactly it happened nobody can be sure of but I’m sure Santo read about Mistico working in front of almost full houses at Arena Mexico while he sat backstage waiting to go out and wrestle in front of a half house at Arena Aficion in Pachuca. Then jealousy took over and now you have delusional Santo who is completely out of touch with the professional wrestling business and is even trying to keep his own kid from using the gimmick.

I still wouldn’t rule out Santo returning to Arena Mexico at some point only b/c Negro Casas is around and if he ever gets as much power as he used to have I’m sure he’d bring back his nemesis for one final feud. It would draw short-term and they’d have no issue with having an actual finish to the feud since Negro always loses.
