a (play)list of 2010 lucha libre matches

Today’s Figure Four Daily includes my cover story of some of the best lucha libre of 2010. I used enough weasel words to avoid having to truly defend any choice, but it was meant to be a nice sampling of the year that was.

If you’ve read the article, or are just interested in watching the matches I picked out, I’ve put together a playlist on YouTube of most of them.

If the embed doesn’t work, you can find the playlist here. Please note that the predominant uploading style this year has to been upload full shows in 10 minutes segments, rather than break them down in matches – you’ll often need to fast forward a bit to find the match.

Thanks to Black Terry Jr., WarriorsX2000, Lover_Ice (and all his accounts) and TheCatchChannel (who I should just be linking to instead of bothering with DailyMotion) for uploading the matches.

Two matches are not included in the playlist.

  • The Lucha Libre USA match is from episode 4, and is match #2 on the show. You can find it on their site.
  • The Dragon Rojo vs Sombra match is viewable thru RadioFormula’s site. If i had more time, I might break my rules and upload it to YouTube, because that player isn’t good for skipping ahead to the second match.

Start the list of matches I should’ve included below. Already regret not wedging in the Palacio Negro/Metal Blanco/Sagrado vs Cancerberos match, but I think those guys will be showing up in a 2011 version of this list.

I did watch Angel Dorado Jr. vs Simbolo. I spent half the match thinking it was pretty good, and the other half wondering why it was on the luchawiki list. And the two halves were mixed together! Maybe I saw the wrong replay of it and there was a time where they didn’t clip out the ref bump and the finish actually made sense (though still probably would’ve been horrible)?

We do need to have a conversation about the Tapatia awards, but probably not on this post.

PlayPlay

Puebla, CMLL @ Tokyo Dome, Guerrero Samurai

CMLL (MON) 01/03 Arena Puebla [Cinco Radio]
3) Euforia, Loco Max, Nosferatu b Ángel de Oro, Ángel de Plata, Diamante
4) Ephesto, Misterioso Jr., Sangre Azteca b Metro, Sagrado, Valiente
5) Negro Casas, Terrible, Texano b La Máscara, Místico, Rotoporky

Some people were wrestling in front of thousands of people in front of the Tokyo Dome. Mistico was getting pwned by a parrot. In the third, the referees were distracted by dives. Perico (who the recaps names “Zacarias”) distracted Mistico, and Negro fouled him again for the pin.

Sangre actually won a match! I have no idea what this means. Mephisto might have suffered a shoulder injury in his match.

CMLL in NJPW:
01/04: La Sombra & Mascara Dorada b Jushin Liger & Hector Garza – Sombra pinned Liger.
Both Dorada and Sombra had new outfits, Dorada wearing a red version of his gear for the first time. Pretty likely we’ll get a Sombra/Lyger CMLL Middlweight title match on one of the CMLL/NJPW shows later this month; Sombra challenged for it, and for the IWGP Junior Tag belts. Lineups for the CMLL shows should be other soon.

Fuego en el Ring has an interview with Guerrero Samurai about his referee stint this past Sunday. Samurai says he was planning on retiring from the ring this year, but CMLL offered a spot as referee and he liked the idea. It sounds like he still planning on doing a few more matches before retiring as a referee this year, but wants to become a good referee after that. He’s probably still due to lose his hair to Malefico or someone else around here.

For the first time in over four years, Arena Coliseo DF will host a boxing event this Saturday. The full lineup is here, and the event will are on Televisa.

DTU’s announced Chica Tormenta/Aero Boy vs Cerebro Negro/Shitara for it’s 01/29 show in Arena Lopez Mateos.

Rob has his WON Awards Ballot and predictions for 2011. I don’t think it’s possible to hold more tournaments this year!

Osaka Holiday Paradise has moved to is own domain, osakahurricane.com.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

And, closing with stuff that’s a bit out of date now:

(I believe that’s this show.)

01/01 – 02 lucha videos

On Multiupload

  • 01/01 CMLL 52MX – tournament
  • 01/01 AAA – last GdT. Worth it to upload the best of?
  • 01/01 WWC – yea, it is weird to have a card with Mesias in the main event and Mascarita Dorada & Pierrothito in the undercard. Shouldn’t Pierrothito be a tecnico here?
  • 01/02 ACM
  • 01/02 ECLL – this is the show with Shockwave the Robot, and I have no idea if this aired before or not. Which shows you how close I’ve been paying attention here.

100% Lucha appears to be on summer break. LATV remains in reruns, though they’ve added a lot more (rerun) airings this week.

On RadioFormula

  • 01/02 CMLL TeleFormula – not up yet?
