Because IWL is that kind of promotion, the five way ended in a draw when Super Crazy pinned himself and Charly Manson in a tapatia and the tercera sets up relevos suicidas next week. Neither Freelance & Suicida have lost their hair this year, so they’re due.
Depending on the review, Cabana/Pearce wasn’t good, or wasn’t good for this audience (which I guess is really same thing.) Favorable reviews for Canek/Alebrije , so it might be a different taste thing.

Charly Manson beat Averno in the main event. It’s now a story point that Manson’s El Pozo is an inescapable leg submission. Manson wants a title match, Averno wants a hair vs mask match. CMLL put up a card for next week, which doesn’t include any singles match with them, but there are matches which look like they’re obviously going to be pulled.
Lyger took the spot originally listed as Atlantis. I love Valiente, like anyone who has a heart, but the tecnico team winning the semimain would’ve been a travesty. Instead, UG killed Rush repeatedly. (Hooray for his hair win.)
Yoshihashi gets a win!
As suspected, no Tony Rivera in the second match. Maybe CMLL didn’t know he quit and was giving anti-CMLL interviews in magazines and just booked him like normal? Guerrero Maya took his spot, and I’m looking forward to that match airing on 52MX.
Olimpico says he’s not sad about losing, because at least he got to lose in Arena Mexico, and this is the price for leaving eighteen months ago. Olimpico feels he lost to a great luchador, and is going to take a few days to figure out what’s next.
Sombra’s next goal: go to Japan, take Lyger’s mask. It’s good to dream. Not putting it past him now.
AAA announced Dos de Tres’s August issue is it’s last. I’ve read many of them and always thought they did a good job, not only writing about AAA but also independents. On their facebook, Dos De Tres says they’re working on a new project. There’s a post on Cronicas Y Leyendas about writing an article for the magazine.
There was a fashion show/lucha show at Arena Mexico Saturday. Sounds like the matches were Mascara/Fantasma/Angel de Oro vs Averno/Ephesto/Arkangel, and Mistico/Sombra/Mascara Sagrada vs Atlantis/Rey Bucanero/Ultimo Guerrero (which is a better main event then shows CMLL runs themselves.)
Pedro Nieves, who helped trained Villano I, Villano III, El Halcon, and Hijo del Gladiator among others, passed away Saturday.
SuperLuchas has Vampiro doing his usual interview, talking about retiring. He’s headed to Japan for Nosawa’s upcoming show.

@thecubsfan: Also, the article made the mistake which probably confused you but I would bet Mascara Dorada worked that fashion show instead of Mascara Sagrada. Unless of course the fashion show was for plus-sized men.

Mas Deporte dedicated a ton of time to WWE. An entire 8 or 9 minute segment/block in fact. And the Televisa hosts refer to Alberto del Rio as “ex Dos Caras Junior”.

I was expecting a little better from CMLL after the big show on Friday. I have not had a chance to go through the posts, so I can’t wait to see what CMLL aired on Sunday.

I agree. CMLL makes their money off live attendance, and from the looks of things, they made a killing Friday.
CMLL gets 2.0 lower than AAA, sells out Arena Mexico. On a bad week, draws 5,000 fans on Friday. AAA gets 2.0 higher than CMLL, draws half of CMLL’s low crowd and calls it a success.
So… yeah. Yay for ratings!
Of course my main argument isn’t even that. I think the numbers are silly b/c there is no pattern. What’s the point of collecting numbers? To establish a pattern/trend which can then be used to explain which angles are over/why business is up or down/which wrestlers get people to watch. Since no pattern/trend has ever developed with these numbers over a 10 month period – it’s just collecting numbers for the sake of collecting numbers so Dave Meltzer can print them in the Observer and make an unqualified observation. My guess for this week will be “AAA’s number was higher due to coming off a week where Perro Aguayo Jr. made an appearence.” Of course the last time Perrito made an appearence it provided zero spike in the ratings. So we learn nothing from the numbers… once again.
CMLL attendance on a bad week is way below 5000.
AAA ratings matter because the bigger the ratings the more money they can get from promoters. In hindsight, AAA still probably makes more money than CMLL through other revenue streams.
ROH is equal to TNA attendance wise, but TNA make money in other ways that ROH can’t.

Ratings matter to the companies who pay for the ringside signage.
I assume that if ratings were too low, Televisa would consider dropping CMLL.
@Lakers fan: ROH is not close to TNA. TNA has been drawing 1,500 paid in cities like Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Fayetteville, and some other cities. Their PPV’s have done 5,000 paid in cities like Boston and Philadelphia.
TNA did 5,000 paid for a house show in Brooklyn.
I’m talking about on average,they don’t do those type of numbers all the time. I know for a fact, most of those ppv shows was buy 1 get one free deals. Which is why TNA stop doing ppvs on the road except BFG.
@Lakers fan: Tsongas Arena near Boston did over 5,000 paid for the first PPV there. Philadelphia at Temple University did well. First time in St. Louis at Family Arena also did 5,000 paid. Smaller markets for PPV, like Greenville SC needed to give away tickets.
I suspect TNA may need to give away some tickets in Daytona. It’s a small market, and I don’t know why they are running that venue.
I think TNA probably draws more paid fans to house shows, that really isn’t debatable – they run more. But, I bet the profit margin based just on ticket sales is higher for ROH. TNAs roster is way more expensive than ROH. TNA probably makes most of their money from house shows on merch, since MOST do not draw houses over 1000 paid.
@Nikita: You’re right about the merch. Mainly, the $20 per autograph they charge at house shows. That’s a big money maker.
When TNA does less than 1,000 at a house show, it’s usually b/c they ran on a Thursday, and/or ran a small market or some off the beaten path venue. It really depends on where they are booked. I think they’ll do 1,200 paid in Canton and Toledo for sure.
However, I don’t think TNA will draw in Manhattan. Why? It’s tough to get people to go to “The City” unless it’s something special. That’s why Manhattan Center is ROH’s “flagship” venue. Those shows are special. A TNA house show won’t do so well there.
