Perros, AAA/IWRG, no Rayo vs Atlantis (yet?), Sexy Star

PdM (TUE) 08/17 Arena Aficion [Estrellas del Ring]
1) Konami, Pesadilla, Ragde b Caricia, Diva Salvaje, Guerrero Negro
2) Celestial, el Ángel, Tony Rivera b Bestia, Maldito Jr., X-Fly
3) Damián 666, el Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Halloween b Hijo de LA Park, Hijo del Lizmark, Súper Nova

Looks like a strong fan turnout. All matches actually ended with a pinfall, which may be a first for this promotion. Perro got Nova in the main event with a little help from Halloween.

Today’s the big AAA taping at IWRG’s place. Well, big for IWRG probably. AAA’s VP of Creative Talent tweeted last night about going on vacation for a week, so I’m thinking he’s skipping out on this one. (Go to the IWL show, pretty sure that guy can’t afford to leave.) AAA notes this is Konnan’s first show back in Arena Naucalpan with AAA since 1996, though he did work there a year later with Promo Azteca.

The big match of the taping is AAA tag team champions Silver King & Ultimo Gladiador vs IWRG tag team champions Hijo de Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr., with only the AAA belts on the line. In the undercard, El Brazo teams up with Decnnis & Billy Boy after turning down their offer to join the Militia last week. That’s probably not an offer you’re allowed to turn down.

According to CMLL.com’s latest lineup update, the Rayo vs Atlantis singles match for Sunday is off. It’s now a trios, La Máscara, Místico, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Volador Junior. I wonder if they just decided to save that match for an Arena Mexico show?

Making the rounds on the internet is this note from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter about Sexi Star’s WWE tryout

As for Sexy Star, they thought her work was terrible, her English was terrible and they also thought she was overweight and wasn’t pretty enough without the mask. John Laurinaitis told the officials at FCW that when it comes to hiring women, the standard is if they aren’t pretty enough to be in Playboy, then the company wouldn’t want them.

Harsh. It’s not actually news that the WWE’s standards for women is weird and dumb – picking people based on how they look in still pictures is not the best plan when their job is to move – but it’s been this way for a long time. The true awfulness here is they took $1,000 of Sexi Star’s money, then told others about how little they thought of her. If people are going to tell me off, I prefer not to pay for it. All considered, Sexi handled this well on Twitter.

In other popular stories which probably mean little, the Rudos de Neza fan club were treated badly by CMLL security for chanting profanity. I have the sneaking suspicion there is more to this story and I don’t think think CMLL is necessarily in the wrong here.

IWL will be giving away free tickets to the first 100 people who show up. Seeing as the guesses were 100 paid for the first show, they might as well just make it a total free show.

The Latin Lover show in Mazatlan with main CMLL & Guadalajara undercard luchadors is tonight. That newspaper usually posts recaps, so there will probably be more about it in a day or two. There had been talk of Latin Lover being on the Anniversary card, but he wasn’t listed on the card CMLL sent out yesterday.

  1. I LOL’ed when I read that wrestlers had to pay $1,000 to get a look. I overheard Nikki talking about getting the tryout and she’s been around the indy scene here for a really long time, but I don’t think she quite fits in the diva mold either.

I agreed with everything about Sexy Star except the fat comment. She’s not fat at all. However this is the same wrestling promotion that thought Mickie James was fat, so…

She does need to learn English.

  2. WWE dropped their price. It used to be $2500 for the tryout camp.

Lucha Libre USA Episode 5 is finally up on MTV’s site.

  3. I actually wrote a column about this back in January when one of my students had a WWE tryout down at OVW. http://mysp.ac/8mta73
I think the OVW camp was $250, but I know the FCW ones are $1200. I know people who have attended them, both as invitees and at their own inquiry.
I was under the impression this past FCW camp was by invite… isn’t it awesome that individuals get invited to spend $1200 to be told they are fat!

  4. It’s not even paying to be told how fat you are. It’s paying for people to tell other people how fat you are behind your back. It was over the top.

  5. @Nikita: Especially harsh towards a woman.

I’m not sure it makes any sort of difference on the political level but wouldn’t it be just spectacular if someone went to the press and showed a photo of Sexy Star (or some other similarly shaped lady who tried out) along with the comments that the WWE thought she was TOO FAT and that they should only hire women who could be in playboy. Way to make all the young girls watching feel great about themselves!

Like I said, probably wouldn’t make a difference in Linda’s campaign but if someone were really digging for dirt it’d be nice to see her questioned on if she’s okay with this type of lesson being taught to the young females watching WWE TV.

  6. Y’know, whomever is running the campaign for McMahon’s opponent is doing a piss poor job. There are sooooo many things that are out there in thge public eye that they could just rip her apart for, and they don’t.

  7. @Nikita: Like what? Attending a racist anti-American church with a batshit crazy pastor, and denying that she practiced a certain religion as a child? That would be Presidential of Linda.

The liberal mainstream media has been campaigning against her for weeks. For example, the NY Times called Linda, a “weird candidate” b/c of her wrestling background. I agree. But when AL FRANKEN, a comedian, with no business background ran for Senate, no one in the media made the same argument.

Truth is, when you’re a Republican candidate, you have to battle your opponent and the liberal media at the same time.

  8. @Rob: No one in WWE is on record as saying Sexy Stay is too fat. My guess is that she failed her tryout, and someone in AAA came to his own conclusion as to why they don’t want her. That person told Meltzer, he repeated it, and now it’s a story. Sexy Star is “too fat”, like there were “8,500” fans in Orizaba.

I think everyone here knew that she isn’t what they are looking for, and that she was wasting her time.

  9. @LLL: It’s possible but considering Meltzer had info on the other girls/guys who tried out as well it would seem the info came from a source at the tryouts, no?

@Nikita: Agreed. I think the problem w/ trying to embarass Linda via wrestling dirt is:

    a) WWE would pay off anyone with information before her opponents could get to them. (evidenced already with the ringboy story)

    and

    b) Stories would have to be corroborated. Hard enough to get one person to talk, let alone two. Any dirt that comes out on her or Vince as relates to wrestling can just be denied by both of them and unless you have cold hard facts (which the WWE is good at covering up) you can’t just make accusations and end up looking bad when you can’t back them up.

  10. Well Vince and Johnny Ace aren’t normal guys.

Thanks for the GIF cubs. That kills me every time.

  11. Btw, for what it’s worth, in a recent interview Rain mentioned that Sexi Star was actually one of the few people who had actually been invited to the tryout camp by WWE and so she didn’t have to pay anything.

  12. @Rob: Why would you want to embarrass Linda? Because she didn’t tell jokes on Saturday Night Live like Al Franken did? She’s a pro-choice Republican, which is what this country needs.

Besides, Linda resigned. The Sexy Star stuff happened she left, just like the Reverend Wright stuff happened after Obama left that “church”. So it can’t be used against her.

Sexy Star is not fat. But she’s not firm either. She covers a lot of her body as a result.

  13. @LLL: This is a Lucha Libre blog. Don’t bring your nutso politics here.

And the last thing you should be doing is arguing U.S. politics with a Canadian who couldn’t care less about his own politics, let alone what you guys down south are doing.

My amusement at seeing Linda having to resign and the McMahons be embarassed has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the WWE crumbling.

  14. That’s ridiculous! Al Franken’s a comedian? He hasn’t been funny in years! Name one funny thing he’s done in the last 15 years.

  15. @Rob: So you just want her to lose because you don’t like WWE. Now I get it.

Honestly, I think she has no right to waste so much money on politics, when the talent could use a pay increase, and some old timers could use the money.

  16. @Phil – While I totally believe that Sexi was invited, from my personal first hand knowledge, an invite doesn’t mean you do not have to pay to attend.
In fact, about a year ago Sinister Minister aka Jim Mitchell made a big deal and the Miami Herald ran an article about how he was invited to a WWE tryout @ FCW and upon arrival was asked to pay the tryout fee – which he refused to do.

@LLL – politics aside, in this day and age where people campaign dirty all the time, not bringing up all the dirty WWE shit that is well known (if not corroborated) is poor strategy.
“Liberal Media” is hilarious though – Rush, Fox News, Glen Beck, Clear Channel, Sean Hannity, Bill Cunningham – all those biased fn Liberals!

  17. @Nikita: Do you think Tyler Black paid?

Fox News is ONE cable channel, compared to the MANY liberal outlets available. There are lots of liberal radio shows, like Ed Shultz and Ron Reagan. Just about all newspapers are left-leaning. All three(ABC, NBC, CBS) network news shows are left-leaning.

The NY Times, and many Connecticut papers have been hard on Linda b/c she’s a REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE. That’s obvious to anyone who follows politics. They are campaigning against Linda. If she loses, they should take the company to Florida, where there’s no state income tax, and f*ck Connecticut.

  18. @Nikita: How fast we forget that Barack Hussein Obama himself cut promos for RAW and SMACKDOWN just before the election. That over the years, many Democratic candidates have appeared at WWE events looking for exposure. That WWE has contributed to campaigns for both parties, and no one refused the money.

  19. I’m not going to junk up Cubs’ blog with political discussion.

The wrestling related point is – The McMahons are scumbags.

Yes, I think Black paid. From my understanding, Kiern looks at the tryout fee as “a small investment compared to what you could make as a WWE superstar”. Also, I would bet a weeks paycheck that the tryout fee is set by the host (OVW, FCW, whomever) rather than WWE. I bet Johnny Ace just shows up and watches and knows nothing about who got there and how.
Lemme put it this way – I know guys who have had dark matches on Raw, who have had to pay to go to camps. ROH champ or not, Black has never had a dark match, so in the “WWE Universe” he would be behind them n the line for tryouts.

  20. @Nikita: Black was asked to go. They have been scouting him for over a year. I doubt that he paid.

Do you think Dos Caras paid for a tryout?

Vince is not stupid enough to let someone slip away, just to make a mark out of them and make them pay $1,000.

    Yes the McMahon’s are scumbags.

  21. Dos is a more interesting question than Black, I think. Dos was main eventing in CMLL, so he was probably making good money by wrestling standards. I would think if WWE were genuinely interested in him, they would foot the bill.
However – Dos could probably more easily afford a tryout fee than your typical indy guy. Plus, with all the back-n-forth over if they were interested in him or not, and then how long WWE sat on him without doing anything, it makes ya wonder if he was being recruited, or if he was trying to get noticed. He had to be making more money in CMLL than he did in WWE development…

I think everyone on the internet greatly underestimates what wrestlers will do to get a shot at the WWE. Letting someone slip thru their fingers is kinda laughable. TNA generally doesn’t sign indy talent – and unless Japan/Mexico is a genuinely viable option, where else would young talent go aside from WWE to actually make money? Most wrestlers are marks for the business, and if you tell then “for $1000 I can tell you what it will take for you to be the next John Cena”, they will do whatever they can to do it. Look how many under 6-ft guys pump themselves full of steroids. WWE is a meat grinder.
