06/06 Masked Warriors debut taping

1) Lujo Esquire & Octagoncito b Misteriocito & Rellik [MW TAG, TOURNAMENT]
2) Magno DQ RJ Brewer
3) Hijo del Lizmark & Sadistiko b Charly Malice & Súper Nova
4) Hijo de Pierroth (MR), Neutroncito, Oriental b Máscara Púrpura, PR Flyer, San Juan Kid
5) Chi Chi & Pequeño Halloween b Mascarita Dorada & Mini Park
6) Marco Corleone b Tinieblas Jr. [MW HEAVY, tournament]

Air dates should be 07/17, 07/24 and 07/31. They started off the show by introducing week 2, then introduced week 1 after the intermission (between 3/4), then introduced week 3 at the end of the show. Two matches per show make more sense (as does having actual new footage for week three), but maybe they’re cutting things up.

Crowd is estimated at 800 in 2000 seat venue. While it looked full in the picture, that’s because the promotion waited nearly an hour after bell time to start the show in hopes more people would turn up (all the while, the ticket office was closed) and then moved everyone down so it’d look good for TV.

Show was sponsored by the same company that sponsored the AAA US tour, because this is being produced by the same company. If you recall, that TV taping looked much worse than a usual AAA taping. Same issues here – this looked like an average low budge indy lucha libre show, not something at a TV taping level. People who remember WSX better can correct me here, but I’m thinking they looked better than this sounds. Same lack of merchandise as the AAA US shows.

Looks like they’re doing two title tournaments right away. Marco, who had a man named “Solid” in his corner (and doing a Super Porky gimmick) was laid out by Hijo de Lizmark after his match, so that’s probably where they’re going with that title. Not sure if the tag team division is meant to be an AAA-like regular guy/mini guy title, but it looks that way from the teams.

Dorada worked almost totally with Halloween and didn’t do as much as he does in some matches. Mini Park is the mini LA Park gimmick. Chi Chi is an exotico with a female manager, La Tigersa. A comment a while back said Alan Funk, who worked as exotico Kwee Wee at the end of WCW, was supposed to work these tapings so I’m thinking it might be him. Mini Park was standing on the top rope to finish Chi Chi, but Tigersa slipped in and powerbombed him.

Flyer/Kid were masked men, “the Puerto Rican Powers”, teaming with the ex-CMLL wrestler. This Hijo de Pierroth appears to be Salsero again. I hope he loses his mask here too. Feuding Puerto Ricians is odd way to go.

Charly was active in his match, doing a couple dives. Hijo de Lizmark has his mask back, as shown in all the posters.

DQ in the second match was for Magno tossing his mask, and the referee eventually noticing the rudo had it.

This is the Octagoncito previous to the current Octagoncito in AAA. Rellik is the same ex-Johnny Stamboli as seen in AAA and elsewhere.

Sombra, LA Park on not being La Parka, Perro

new Sunday Arena Mexico main event:
6) Máscara Dorada, Místico, Mr. Águila vs Averno, Negro Casas, Volador Jr. [Relevos Increíbles]
Sombra (and Felino) are off the card.

In an interview with Reforma reposted on El Martiente, LA Park explains he’s going to keep calling himself LA Park. Park feels he’s proven his point about who was the better Parka by winning the match, and since La Parka Jr. won’t be using that name, there will no longer be any confusion. That actually makes a little bit of sense, but if the point of the match is the winner gets to be La Parka, the winner really needs to be La Parka. This seems like an explanation of why he won’t be using the La Parka name anywhere outside of AAA, because it’s still an AAA name. LA Park also says he thought Dorian turned on him, but looking back at it now, he was just protecting his father (his father he had destroyed by Vampiro about a month ago),  and Park can’t really blame him for his actions. Park hopes he didn’t lose his friendship with Dorian, but is glad the Perros helped him out.

Perro Aguayo Jr. says they’ve changed the history of lucha libre and Los Perros have the best fighters. Perro threw in Santo & Demon among people who were in his promotion, but I can’t see them showing up in AAA. Maybe Demon, but he has his own plans.

In news about people I’m more curious about, Super Nova is supposed to be on the next Perros del Mal podcast, so I guess he’s staying. I know I’m probably wrong, but I have this belief that someone will do Texano Jr vs Super Nova someday and it’ll actually be a big deal. Won’t happen yet (and probably shouldn’t.)

Silver King is cleared to wear a mask in Mexico City now because he’s wrestling there as “Silver Cain“, licensed and all. Hilarious. It still hasn’t been five years since he lost his mask as Black Tiger, but no one really cares.

Ultimo Gladiador wasn’t wearing his mask for the post match press conference. I still don’t understand the deal there. The Gladiatores has video of the press conference.

Gallo is proud of winning the Occidente Light Heavyweight championship and, like anyone who wins anything in Guadalajara, would really like to make it to Arena Mexico. Before then, he’d like to confirm his championship by defending against Misterioso II, who held this title before Mictlan (and no one wants to wrestle Mictlan.)

Someone’s making a musical out of Santo vs las Mujeres Vampiro (1962). I have no idea.

In an amazing coincidence, a Mexican Team just happened to out score a South Africian team on the dance competition show Latin Lover judges. It’s not the finals, it’s just some random head to head bit. More of note, Latin Lover bet his hair against a South African judge, though the article doesn’t make it quite clear what they were betting on. I guess on which team would eventually win. Don’t put it on the luchawiki.

Cesar says AAA made a lot of noise but didn’t get a full house. It’s psychological great to be able to have a full house, but an 80% full building, given the size of the building and the ticket prices, still pays the bills pretty well.

Cronicas Y Leyendas has photo of a lightweight Blue Panther from 1980, Mil Mascaras & Canek teaming up, and a video interview with lucha historian Teddy Banos.

Sombra vs Gedo from the Best of Super Juniors is now up. Sombra took the pinfall in a 10 man tag today.

Chico Che and Bugambilia face off in a hair match tonight Arena Aficion.

I can’t decide if video of Chessman answering questions on Facebook is the best or worst thing ever. He’s answering questions from fans on AAA’s Facebook, he’s not answering questions about Facebook or it’s privacy policy, that’d clearly be great.

Box Y Lucha 2977 has an exclusive on Dr. Wagner winning the title and Taichi losing his hair. They must’ve gone to press later than usual to cover TripleMania & Sin Salida – the rest of the magazines won’t have it until next week.

Luchas2000 524 has Latin Lover, Sombra, Oriental

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

06/05 videos

No new IWRG. AAA Lucha Mania may be history, but I’ve got a few matches left I’ve finally got off the TiVo. These all did not air in the US.

  • 04/11 AAA Mexico TV Match 1 – 03/25/07 opener features locals whose names I’m not sure of
  • 04/17 AAA Mexico TV Match 3 – 04/20/07 Laredo Kid, Pegasso, Rey Cometa, Súper Fly vs Gran Apache, Policeman, Super Calo, Toxico AAA (who now has a different name)
  • 04/24 AAA Mexico TV Match 1 – 04/24/07 Jerrito Estrada & Mini Histeria vs Mini Crazy Boy & Mini Joe Lider (presumbably now DTU workers under different names)

IIRC, I found a couple more of these previously but I can’t recall if they made it up the blog. I may track them down.

Next week: Maybe 100% Lucha (which is back on again, plus I still had episodes from March). I’m warning you ahead of time that it’s, uh, interesting wrestling and of the four episodes I’ve taped, one is missing the first eight or so minutes, and two are missing the final eight minutes (including the one with the end of the league tournament.) Didn’t have time to get them done for this week.
