Fantasma/Casas, double champion, Apache

CMLL (SUN) 05/23 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Gran Kenut b Templario
2) Relampago Azul & Thunder Boy b Acertijo & Cerveruz
3) El Divino & Leo b Ángel del Mal & In Memoriam
4) Mr. Trueno b Astaroth [tournament, OCCIDENTE LH]
5) Gallo b Malefico [tournament, OCCIDENTE LH]
6) Brazo de Plata, La Sombra, Toscano b Ephesto, Héctor Garza, Terrible
7) Hijo del Fantasma DQ Negro Casas

Negro Casas faked a foul in the second fall, and Fantasma returned the favor in the third.

Garza teamed with the rudos, lost. No one wonder he took his time joiing them.

Gallo & Mr. Trueno meet next week for the Occidente LH title. I’ve actually worked out the brackets to this tournament and feel like I should be hearing a *ding* for some sort of 3rd level achievement. Once I figured out the result I had wrong, it turns out to be a reasonable sensible 10 wrestler tournament. Gallo will have to win his fourth match to take the whole tournament, but he’s Gallo so it seems likely.

CMLL (SUN) 05/23 Arena Coliseo [@cmllmagazine, CMLL]
1) Camaleón & Principe b Apolo Estrada Jr. & Disturbio
2) Horus, Metálico, Starman b Durango Kid, Puma King, Tiger Kid
3) Fabián el Gitano, Leono, Pegasso DQ Dr. X, Loco Max, Nitro
4) Metro, Rush, Valiente b Dragón Rojo Jr., Euforia, Vangelis
5) Máximo, Shocker, Strong Man DQ Rey Bucanero, Taichi, Último Guerrero

Taichi fouled Maximo for the DQ.

DQ in tercera was for Dr. X pulling Fabian’s mask again. You know what would make me look really dumb? If the strange lineup this Sunday was actually cover for CMLL doing Dr. X vs Fabian this week.

(I’m thinking I’m about to look really dumb.)

IWRG (SUN) 05/23 Arena Naucalpan [Estrellas del Ring]
1) Comando Negro b Dinamic Black
2) Cerebro Negro, Eragon, Hijo del Pantera b Alan Extreme, Heavy Boy, Hijo del Signo
3) Dr. Cerebro b Fuerza Guerrera [IWRG IC WELTER]
4) Bombero Infernal b Jack [hair]
5) Cibernético, Olímpico, Tinieblas Jr. b Hernandez, Hijo del Cien Caras, Máscara Año 2000 Jr.

Hernandez accidentally hit the referee, pinned Cibernetico, but no one counted. Cibernetico got the pin after the ref recovered. AAA says the IWRG guys turned on the AAA guys at the end of the match, though the EdR recap doesn’t mention it.

Hair match was bloody; at least this Jack knew where the blood was coming from.

Dr. Cerebro is already lightweight champion, so he can walk around with a lot of belts that he’s not doing a lot with. This title had been inactive for a year before suddenly doing a title change, so I wonder if this is possibly connected with next month’s visitors…

Vanguardia’s report on an AAA spot show in Satillo includes a mention of Gran Apache being injured in the semifinal.

Estrellas del Ring has an interview with Tijuana’s Pancho Cachondo.

The poster for tomorrow’s Dantes Factory show has Huracan Ramirez vs Olimpico for the UWA Middleweight Championship; Olimpico skipped out on the last show here and they set up the title match with Jaque Mate Jr. instead. (This is why you wait to the last minute to do posters.)

  1. 5/21 Smackdown 9.8

    5/23 CMLL 2.3
    AAA 5.5

CMLL started at 1:30, followed by AAA at 3:30, slightly off from AAA’s 4p start.

  2. @LLL: Good. They deserve to die in the ratings with the awful TV show they are currently producing. I hope it goes down to 0.1 if that’s what it takes for someone to go “oh shit, maybe we should stop with 9 minute commercial breaks and 31 minutes of wrestling in a 2 hour block”.

  3. You know Keith I would love to know more about CMLL’s TV situation if you can find out. Some things I’ve always wondered:

    1. Who’s job is it to sell ad time? CMLL or Televisa?
1a) If it’s CMLL – do they even bother?

The bulk of ads seem to be for ringtones, various other toys for your phone and excercise equipment. Those seem like the cheapest ads possible.

    2. Does Televisa mandate a certain amount of commercial time per show so CMLL can only send them something like 44 minutes of wrestling per hour they have?
2a) If yes, how would that explain a 9 minute commercial break in the second hour yesterday even though they had already had more than enough commercials?

I wonder if CMLL just quickly edits the show late Friday/early Saturday and sends it off without even bother to check if they have any extra time. So then Televisa gets the tape and realizes there is extra time and they just add more commercials to fill it.

    3. Does CMLL decide to do segments like talking to the fans, the lineups (10 times per show), picking a fan of the week, trivia, guest host, etc. or does someone from Televisa attend the live shows and orders those segments to take place?

I wonder if CMLL has just given up and treats their own TV show as an infomercial – hence ads for all their live shows before and after every commercial break. The Friday matches themselves are just an afterthought.

    Your thoughts?

  4. @thecubsfan: I honestly can’t tell you. It’s been ages since I watched AAA on XEJ and all the DVD’s/youtube AAA uploads have commercials edited out obviously.

    Anyone know?

  5. AAA definitely has the same crappy commercials and long commercial breaks. Maybe a little less time per break and they definitely seem to run a little more time between commercial breaks.

  6. Whoever does the tv for CMLL on Televisa needs to take a clue from ACM or Cadena Tres. I mean ACM gets two falls in one segment. LATV is the same like Televisa with the commercials. That first match this week took 30 minutes.

  7. @Tim: I think the deal with LATV was you can’t fit in as many breaks during a lightning match as a three fall one, so they had to wedge another one in the opener. It’s going to happen every week they have lightning matches, because they have five breaks to squeeze in (and ACM has only 3 or 4)

  8. When did Kaji Tomato vacated the UWA Middleweight Championship belt and why is it back in Mexico?

  9. @Arnold: I don’t know who Kaji Tomato is but I’m sure he didn’t. There are like like 47 versions of that title around the world.

  10. @Rob: Televisa sells the ads. CMLL and AAA sell ringside signage.

Televisa decides the “Total Running Time”, which seems to be 39:00 or 40:00 per hour. That’s low. Industry standards are usually in the 44:00-45:00 range. So Televisa is responsible for the long commercial breaks. They seem longer on CMLL b/c, as you noted, they run 9 minutes of ringtone ads, then come back and hype house shows for another 2 minutes.

Those annoying ringtone ads and product ads are per inquiry. Televisa makes money only if people call.

I have no idea why Televisa is doing this to AAA and CMLL, but it’s hurting the product. You really need to DVR or hope someone uploads on youtube.

I don’t know if Televisa came up with fan of the week, but they should be ashamed of themselves for not selecting Alan.

  11. Maybe it’s the WWA Middleweight title, which Olimico won a version off – U or W… not that far off.
