Volador/Mistico, CMLL/Invaders, Rayo, Viva La Lucha, Santo

CMLL (MON) 05/17 Cancha de Fut-Rap [El Manana]
2) Mr. Águila, Oriental, Rossy Moreno b Juventud Guerrera, Sexy Flor, Super Crazy [seconds hair]
3) Blue Panther, Hijo del Fantasma, La Sombra ?? Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Texano
4) Volador Jr. b Místico [MEX LH]

Mistico was in his evil green gear, but it was Volador who took advantage of some rudo-ness. Volador took the first, Mistico the second. In the third, Mistico got La Mistica, but Sombra (Volador’s second) yanked off Mistico’s mask, and Volador pinned him to retain the title.

Local referee Pinocho lost his hair to Tirantes Sr. in the seconds hair match. The promoter here has been running these combo CMLL/Independent shows for a few months now, so it’s not as much meaningful to the current storyline expect it’s probably where the discussion of doing that sort of story started.

Cesar has a long piece about how the Invasion of CMLL came to be that’s well worth reading. Psicosis II, as an actual leader of the ex-AAA guys, was important to get this going, and CMLL’s been contacting former members of the promotions who are still loosely aligned with the group (your Universo 2000s). As Cesar understands it, the plan at the moment is for Hector Garza to be the leader of the group (this would explain that trios challenger change), though they’ve had talks with an unnamed current AAA wrestler about returning, and Cesar suggests that El Hijo del Santo could be (or could’ve been) a possibility, since it’s been a while since he’s complained about CMLL. That would be interesting, but highly unlikely.

Rayo de Jalisco Jr. says it may be some time before he returns to CMLL, because he has not yet signed a contract for dates. He says he returned to CMLL because he never had any problem with the company and wanted to help stop all this Invaders. Kcidis illustrates Rayo’s return and hopes for a feud with Ultimo Guerrero.

The Viva La Lucha PPV has add Sabu vs LA Park from the most recent XLAW show (cut down to 15 minutes; went 26:50 live), and something with Blue Demon Jr. and Oliver John.  [poll id=”65″]

The main event of the actual Perros taping, the match with Latin Lover, Marco Corleone and El Hijo del Santo vs Perro Aguayo Jr., Blue Demon and Hijo de Lizmark, will NOT air on the PPV. The assumption here is Santo wanted more money to allow his match to air on PPV and said no. It’s a tricky situation, because they clearly wanted Santo on the card to help draw, but by putting him in a main event with Perro and Demon, two guys they appear to see as the big stars here, those guys have to be wedged onto the show in less prominent ways. As it’s advertised on the preview show, Hijo de Rey Misterio & Groon XXX vs Super Nova & Oriental is the main event, and as much as I like one team there, I think Oriental’s family wouldn’t trust to make that the main event of an Arena Azteca Budokan show. (The preview show does seem to have realized this, and tries to push this show as a variety of match styles rather than around one specific match.) Maybe Santo gave the impression he’d be okay with his match airing and then upped his price after the fact?

Ratings

  • CMLL, on Televisa on Sunday and at a different time, got a 2.8 rating, 0.6 down from last week. They’re averaging a 3.26 over the last five weeks.
  • AAA on Televisa got a 5.3, up from a 4.9 last week. They’re averaging a 5.0 the last five weeks.

Hijo del Fantasma says HE should be the #1 contender for the CMLL Middleweight Championship, since he never got a rematch versus Negro Casas. Maybe their singles match will settle this? Fantasma getting the title match with Liger is a nice consolation prize if Hector Garza is too busy with the Invaders bit to do that feud. Fantasma also says he’s okay with the Sombra/Dorada/Mascara trio challenge for the trios title without him, since his trio came together equally as randomly and the important thing is to take the titles back for Mexico. (Though that’s apparently not true with the middleweight title!)

Electroshock previews his match with Dr. Wagner Jr., calls himself slow as an elephant (setting up a compliment.)

El Hijo del Santo will be appearing (but not wrestling) at a Tijuana Book Fair this Wednesday.

LuchandoLibre has photos and results from the EAW show on Sunday.

There’s a Bolivan Lucha Libre game for PS2. At least there is in Bolivia. And on file sharing sites, if you search “Furia de Titanes PS2”, though I have no idea how to get PS2 games from a computer to the system.

Proyeccion Luchistica has an interview with El Dollar.

The Gladiatores has an interview with IWRG referee El Ruvinski and early match wrestler/man with unfortunate hair style Eterno.

Fantasma/Negro match was set up last Sunday. Fantasma is also listed as working in Arena Lopez Mateos on the same day, which is fairly impossible. (The AULL lineups was announced weeks ago. Dealing with CMLL must be so fun.)

Hector Garza! Actually on the rudo side!

  1. “though I have no idea how to get PS2 games from a computer to the system.”

Requires a modded system, a DVD burner, and a whole lot of patience.

  2. I voted “Yes”. As I understand it, only cable subs will have access to this show, while Dish and Direct subs will miss out.

    I’ll definitely get it though.

  3. I would probably order the ppv for the Turbo/Black Thunder match and the TJP/Aguila match. The main event not airing sucks since it would have been nice to see if they could capture the crowd reaction effectively. Probably wouldn’t have come across great anyway since I’m assuming the English audio will be dubbed over the crowd noise and probably kill the reaction. The good news is with the trimmed down lineup, there should be plenty of time given to the two good singles matches without needing to clip them down too much. Hopefully this does actually make it out onto DVD so I can pick up a copy then.

So, what may wind up being Groon XXX’s last match winds up as the main event on the PPV? The preview awesomely barely mentions him while hyping the match.

Maybe KevinK can give us some info on the main event being left out?

  4. Hey All,

The main event was NEVER supposed to be part of the PPV and for those who had been to the VivaLaLucha.com page before the live taping would have seen that we never promoted it as part of the event.

From day one (or at least day one of walking away from Valiente Lucha Libre in Chicago, um, I mean New York, um I mean oops – you know, the guys who were notified before April 1st that Parka, Dreamer, Hijo De Rey Misterio, Puma, Scorpio Sky and Misterioso were all being pulled off the show, yet never updated advertising and left fans at the venue shaking their heads) we knew that the Pay Per View would be different than the live show.

Losing Tommy Dreamer due to the Mexicali earthquake wasn’t part of the plan.
Having XLAW stop Sabu from appearing on a PDM show wasn’t part of the plan.

There were definitely moments that led to frustration, but such is going to be the case when you are not booking a show on your own for the sole purpose of your own production.

And, even as the card kept changing, one of the key agreements we had with PDM was that even if certain members of the PDM group (Damien, Halloween, Aguila, and Perrito) appeared in the main event, they would also appear in another match and/or segment for the PPV taping – which is why the Perrito/Hijo confrontation/match/angle happened.

Also, the PPV preview and/or website order of match graphics, does not specifically indicate the match order on the PPV.

There are additional segments and matches (including the 15 minutes of LA Park vs. Sabu) which had to be worked into the format and make the show flow the best it could.

All things considered, we are extremely pleased with the final outcome.

The only match that had anything beyond stalling/entrances/time filling clipped was Park vs. Sabu. Turbo vs. Black Thunder (which opens the PPV) and Aguila vs. TJP are both shown in their entirety and are both very good matches. (And yes, I am bummed that Aguila won’t be available for what I had hoped would be a 2/3 falls rematch with TJ on PPV 2).

I’m also bummed that we didn’t really have any usable footage of Groon being worked on in the locker room after the match. The Commission doc wouldn’t let the cameras near him. Oy!

And yes, as of right now, the PPV will only be available via cable PPV and not satellite. The satellite PPV business is not nearly as friendly or lucrative as the cable one.

  5. I gotta say, if the price remains around twenty bucks and Verizon is carrying it, I’ll be ordering the PPV. I’ve just gotta see the LA Park vs. Sabu match.

  6. Though I will say that is sucks that he suffered such a gruesome injury. You could see bone poking through leg. No good.

  7. The Apaches jumping would be gold. Didn’t CMLL already reach out to Lider/Nicho last year or was that just Konnan trying to put them over like Jack/Teddy in the observer? They are in good with AAA, so I can’t see it. Zorro to CMLL has been a dream of so many for so long. I doubt it’ll ever happen.

  8. @KevinK: I see.

Ouch! Poor Groon. I don’t think he’s ever going to realize his body, no matter how big he gets, isn’t made for pro wrestling. That’s way too many injuries in his career.

  9. @Alfredo: Exactly what career do you think someone who looks like Groon would be better suited for? This calls for a kcidis cartoon of Groon XXX working at Walmart.

  10. While we’re all talking, I would indeed be interested in who you all think we should be considering for the Viva La Lucha PPVs. Independent guys who can work PDM shows (since it looks like we will continue in this vein at least for the time being) and/or Americans who will fit the lucha style well (i.e. TJ Perkins and his match with Aguila that has been heavily praised).
