AAA defeats IWRG, Guadalajara, Aguila

IWRG (SUN) 05/16 Arena Naucalpan [Black Terry Jr. (flickr), Estrellas del Ring, Al Filo del Ring]
1) Comando Negro b Imperial
2) Alan Extreme & Eterno b Dinamic Black & Fly Star
3) Jack b Bombero Infernal
4) Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro b Avisman, El Hijo del Diablo, Gringo Loco [IWRG IC TRIOS]
5) Silver King b Máscara Año 2000 Jr., Último Gladiador, Dr. Cerebro, Suicida, Pimpinela Escarlata, Extreme Tiger, Veneno, Pantera, Kenzo Suzuki [Copa Higher Power]

The AAA rudos and tecnicos did not get along, but they still managed to get the win. It came down to Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. versus Ultimo Gladiador & Silver King. Mascara pinned Ultimo Gladiador after pulling off his mask, then Kenzo took the referee and Ultimo Gladiador came back in to help Silver King, and Silver King picked up the win for Team AAA. Way to let IWRG down, everybody!

Oficials took the 1st and 3rd to retain the trios titles, though the Gringos may have kicked out at 2 at the finish. That’s going around here.

Jack & Bombero Infernal had a bloody brawl to set up their hair match next week.

CMLL (SUN) 05/16 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Meteoro b Virgo
2) El Divino & Leo b Ángel del Mal & In Memoria
3) Ebola b Mr. Trueno [tournament, OCCIDENTE LH]
4) Gallo b Drago [tournament, OCCIDENTE LH]
5) Metal Blanco & Palacio Negro DQ Mephisto & Vangelis
6) Hijo del Fantasma, Místico, Strong Man b Felino, Negro Casas, Terrible

Fantasma got Negro Casas clean with a German suplex in the third fall, which will set up a singles match next week. Fantasma still owes Negro one for beating him for the CMLL Middleweight title.

Locals Metal Blanco and Palacio Negro were more trouble than the rudos had figured on, so Mephisto fouled Blanco in the third fall.

Let’s look at this tournament so far:

05/02: Malefico b Infierno
05/02: Drago b Neutrón
05/09: Astaroth b Ráfaga
05/09: Gallo b Rey Trueno
05/16: Ebola b Mr. Trueno
05/16: Gallo b Drago

Have I screwed up something here, or is this not coming together at all? Gallo is currently listed in a third match next week.

Mr. Aguila worked a Martha Villalobos show before running in Arena Mexico, fouling Marco Corleone in the main event. (Hijo de Lizmark, who presumably was not running in another promotion’s show, did not appear.) A post on Box Y Lucha states Mr. Aguila gave the Perros a heads up that he was leaving before doing the run-in, which is always the professional move.

Perros del Mal and The Gladiatores have a podcast of their show from last Wednesday. Anyone listen?

The official name of the MTV2/3 Lucha Libre show is “Lucha Libre USA: Masked Warriors”.

Can’t link to it, but today’s Ovaciones has a big interview with Scorpio Jr., looking for one last shot in Arena Mexico. Scorpio is demanding a loser leaves Arena Mexico match with Shocker, angry that Shocker claims to own the Guapo gimmick when he used the name first.

Luchas2000 521 has LA Park vs La Parka Jr.

Over on Twitter, Tajiri wants to know whatever happened to Mogur.

  1. Wasn’t the IWRG Trios supposed to be the Mexican State Trios?

Also, anyone want to help me out on what COPA Higher Power actually is? Obviously, it’s the Higher Power Cup… whatever that may be <_<

    Thanks :)

  2. @LUKIE: It was supposed to be the EdM title. No idea why they made the change. Last time they did champion vs champion, each team won the match to keep their trios titles, but maybe they decided they didn’t have time to do it twice with the AAA vs IWRG stuff.

Copa Higher Power is a periodic cibernetico match IWRG runs. It’s not yearly or semiannually, it’s whenever they feel like running one, so they’ve run 18 or 19 (everyone’s lost count) since they started to call the promotion IWRG. It dates back to days when all the not-yet-Toryumon guys were here, so “Higher Power” is probably someone mistranslating something and it stuck.

  3. @LLL: 2.8 is the lowest number since January. The move to Sunday didn’t seem to hurt them last week, but maybe it did this week.

  4. I’ll guess the move hurt b/c the show aired too early in the afternoon, instead of being the lead-in to AAA. If Televisa would give CMLL a regular Sunday slot, making a 4 hour block with AAA, I’d hope they would do mid-3’s on average.

CMLL needs to treat the Cadena Tres show as their flagship show. Televisa is a lost cause when it comes to airing Lucha Libre. They screw both Mexican promotions around.

  5. @LLL: Do we know how many people watch the CadenaTres show? I would guess, even with the Saturday show, it’s a lot lot less.

  6. @thecubsfan: You’re right, Galavision 9 is stronger, so they have more viewers. But C3 is a superstation, so Mexico City residents can watch it over-the-air on free tv, SKY, or Cablevision. If fans realized that C3 was airing the important matches and angles, I’d imagine it would be better for business in the long run.

I’ll bet that Televisa wants to mess around with AAA and CMLL. Televisa is doing well with RAW and the WWE PPV’s, so they probably look down on the domestic groups.
