top six stories of the last two weeks

1) Perros del Mal and Masked Republic to tape US PPV on May 2nd. This is not totally new; a PPV had been announced but the participants, location and date have all changed. Match wise, this is not actually a big show for the Perros – the hair and mask marches will take place in Tijuana the night before – but it’s still overloaded with names and is more important from a business perspective.

2) After the Casas brothers walked out on Mistico in a trios match, Mistico declared he’s back to being 100% tecnico. This was done abruptly, and Mistico continued to cheat to win matches and still was occasionally booked on rudo sides, but it appears he means what he says. With the exception of lingering Volador/Sombra/Mistico tension, it seems as if CMLL is returning to the status quo before the Mistico turn.

3) Electroshock & Silver King turned on Dr. Wagner Jr. Up until now, they build had been towards Electro being kciked out of the group, but when things finally broke down between Wagner & Electro, Silver King surprisingly attacked his brother and threw in with Electroshock. It looks like Ultimo Gladiador will be sticking with the rudos, which leaves Dr. Wagner with…Pimpinela? (Or maybe this is just a clever way to phase out Wagner should he not decide to stay around.)

4) A bunch of ex-AAA wrestlers made a run-in on Monday’s CMLL Arena Puebla show, attacking tecnicos. The group included Histeria, Psicosis, Alebrije, Maniaco Even Cuije was in on the rudo sneak attack, taking out Monito. This is definitely the first part of a bigger story, but the scope of the angle is unknown – will it go beyond Arena Puebla? Will it include other former AAA or current Perros del Mal wrestlers?

5) The AAA video game, “Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes en el Ring 2011” got a US distributor and a release date. Konami will be releasing the game August 8th, and earlier reviews were high on the graphics but not as much on the gameplay. WWE video games sell well and TNA’s game flopped, so brand recognition means a lot, but TNA’s game might have sunk more for the gameplay and the story. This seems like a longshot to do well right away, but it’s a long shot I’m excited for. The trailer is really strong.

6) After a couple weeks of not getting along with his partners, Hector Garza appears headed back to the rudo side. Garza, still trios champ with tecnicos Fantasma and Mascara, is booked on the rudo side on Friday (w/Polvora in the Gran Alternativa) and Sunday (feuding with Strong Man)

  1. The invasion angle is the top story. Its not even close. ex-AAA guys, who happen to be in a legal tussle with their ex-promotion over their names, showing up at a CMLL show as a surprise, which no one saw coming…c’mon…

    Even if its in Puebla. It happened already. We still don’t know if that PPV will happen since its been changed numerous times. The Wagnermaniacos turning on Dr. Wagner was going to happen at some point given AAA’s love of having their main eventers work as tweeners against factions and teaming with former rivals. The Mistico turn/non-turn has been ongoing.

    Actually, the bottom three should be the top 3 given the interest in the video game and Garza heading back to the rudo side is a win.

  2. @Alfredo: I agree.

    It remains to be seen how the PdM office reacts. Sure they *SAY* they want their guys to take any bookings since it makes money but how many times have promoters said one thing and done another? Is this a sign that group was mad at their PdM payoffs? Maybe the PdM group isn’t doing as well as some assume.

    I’d go as far as to say this is the top story of the year besides Mistico’s turn.*

    * = assuming it wasn’t a one-week surprise which doesn’t go anywhere

  3. I wish someone would do an old school PWI type story on the Park family, with the entire family poolside in masks. LA Park at the grill, Mrs. Park serving lemonade, Hijo sliding down the slide and splashing water all over his sister… good times!

  4. The PPV will happen! It has been a nightmare on some levels (Valiente Lucha Libre in NY canceling 5 of 6 April dates on talent like Demon, Parka, Hijo, etc, wasn’t a real good move and so Masked Republic made the decision to cease business with the group and work with Perros. In fact, the seeds for a MR/Perros deal were laid last summer when MR started signing talent to licensing/merchandising representation deals), but the contracts with iN DEMAND and TVN are signed, announcements are coming soon regarding other carriers, and while the lineup may change continuously before May 2nd, once that weekend is over, the PPV lineup should be set. Well, mostly…
