  1. Match: Wagner/Mesias from TripleMania. Somehow ended up being more enjoyable than anything else I watched from Mexico in 2009, with the Casas/Mistico match from March (I think, not sure on the date) being a really close second.

  2. Best Match- Mistico vs Negro Casas, Aniversario. This match was great, between the build up prior, the fan interest & the actual match itself. This is a definite frontrunner for Best Match of the Year. ‘Nuff said.

Most Underutilized-Aero Star. One of the few great things in AAA at the moment. Aero Star is without a doubt a star in the making, & (in my opinion) the next Rey Misterio Jr. It’s criminal how AAA books him, & thus is Most Underutilized of the Year.

  3. I think that Negro Casas vs Mistico from 4/12/09 @ Arena Mexico has been largely forgotten… it was a really good match in the semi-main that picked up for the slack with the Ultimo/V5 main event. Their Anniversario match was nowhere near as good as this one.

There were two really good Navarro/Traumas v Cerebros/Terry matches in IWRG. The date for one is (I Think) 5/9… I cant find the date for the other one though, and I like it better.

Also, Mephesto & Ephesto vs. Volador & Sombra from 12/4 was pretty damn good…

  4. I think Zorro should run away with the underutilized category this year.
    Alan Stone also says “Hi”.
You cannot have an “underutilized” category without the obligatory Billy Boy mention.

  5. underutilized: im gonna say alan stone. he has a great look and is also a seemingly good to great worker. seemed to have dissapeared from aaa tv the final part of the year. hopefully we see more of him this year. also zorro and decnis

match of the year: mephisto and averno vs sombra and volador was one of the best tag matches ive think ive ever seen. mistico vs negro casas from march the 20th(?) was also great. and nicho vs joe lider from 3/20 was also awesome to watch from the aaa

  6. Hey, if the Cancerberos keep getting decent matches on Tuesdays, this might be the last year for a while that Rob gets to vote for Virus in this category!

Zorro seems like a good fit for underutilized this year. He went from main eventing Triplemania in 2008 to not doing much of anything…besides being part of a huge angle at Triplemania this year. If only they had remembered to go somewhere with it we wouldn’t have to be having him in this category. In CMLL, I’d have to go with Hooligan, but you could fill in the blank with any of the Tuaregs. Couldn’t you at least give them a shot at the Coliseo tag belts by now? And in IWRG, I’d say Jack could have been used better. He was hugely over with the live crowd, and I thought he put on some solid matches. But, the only time he got moved up the card was when you knew he was about to drop his mask.

  7. @Nikita: I think you mean the 3/20 match if you are talking about the Dos Leyendas matchup. I’m pretty sure the April match was the title rematch.

  8. Yes… but now that I thinkabout it, didnt they have two really good ones around that time, one of which was in Coliseo for FoxSports?

  9. OK, I’m going to lay out the candidates I like for match of the year and try to track down a video link for each of them. I think this would be helpful if other people did it as well, particularly if you are recommending something that didn’t air on one of CMLL’s main shows or AAA. Not everyone got to see a lot of IWRG, etc, so it would help make the case for some of those matches if it is easy for everyone to check them out now.

Dr. Wagner vs Mesias at TripleMania XVII (AAA, 6/13, Palacio del Deportes)-Part 1 (remaining parts can be found on the page) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4Ih7BQetww I’m not a fan of either of these guys, but the build to this match was nearly perfect, you went into the match not knowing who was going to win, and they some how found a way to live up to the hype. The crowd was electric and they managed to keep everyone’s attention throughout the entire match, which couldn’t have been easy at that point in the show. This match will probably get dragged down in the voting based on the six months of mostly awful rematches they did. But, this was a rare case of working the right match the first time through.

Mistico vs Negro Casas at Dos Leyendas (CMLL, 3/20, Arena Mexico)- http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8t86m_mistico-c-vs-negro-casas_sport This was my favorite of their matches this year, far better than their Anniversary match in my opinion. If they had pulled this match off at Anniversary, I think it would be the frontrunner in my mind, but I’m not sure that was even possible given that part of what made this work was that noone really expected Casas to win here. That made some of the near falls in the third fall much more effective than they are in many matches. My fear for this match is that the Mistico/Casas votes will get spread around since they had so many matches this year.

Celestial/Talisman Vs. Halloweencito/Mr Agulita at Lucha Libre La Experiencia (Perros del Mal, 7/26, Centro Banamex)-Part 1 (remaining parts can be found on the page) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTlXSaudxwU My obligatory Perros del Mal entry. Since this was before their TV deal, this may be the only video the match. Actually, I’m sure there is more handheld footage out there, and if anyone has run across other versions of this, please let me know. I would say that this was the minis match of the year. It was so good, that I had actually forgotten that Talisman was in it and convinced myself that Cosmico was on the tecnico side. I know a lot of you probably haven’t seen this, so enjoy and give it some consideration when voting.

Volador & La Sombra vs Averno y Mephisto (CMLL, 1/16, Arena Mexico)-Part 1 (remaining parts can be found on the page) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfOKR05_rUo . Great tag title match with a worked injury that was very well done. This match really moved Volador Jr & La Sombra up in my eyes. It was early in the year, so it is worth checking out again when making your MotY selections.

Místico, Volador Jr., La Sombra VS Mr. Niebla, Felino, Negro Casas (CMLL, 6/2, Arena Mexico)-Part 1 (remaining parts can be found on the page) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SSlVX9beRQ My favorite trios match of the year. Some good flying and all sides played the crowd perfectly. Just an all around fun match.

Averno VS Blue Panther (CMLL, 5/29, Arena Mexico)-sadly I can only find the clipped version of this that aired on the recap show in January http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzFzgh5957k&feature=related Match starts around the 4 minute mark and continues on the next segment. I remember enjoying the hell out of this match when it first aired. Panther and Averno worked very well together throughout it. The ending was a little overbooked (odd for CMLL), but I still think its worth a second look.
