Guadalajara, Mexico, AAA Sin Limite, ratings, Puebla

CMLL (TUE) 01/12 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Relampago & Virgo b Meteoro & Saturno
2) Asesino Negro & Drago b Angelo & Metatrón
3) Hierro & Palacio Negro b Ángel del Mal & Rey Trueno
4) Máscara Dorada & Valiente b Ephesto & Euforia
5) Blue Panther, Brazo de Plata, Hijo del Fantasma b Máscara Mágica, Terrible, Texano

Valiente got sent over here to replace Maximo. Porky pinned Terrible in the main event. Tag team champions of this specific building losing a tag team match in this specific building should lead somewhere…

CMLL (TUE) 01/12 Arena Mexico [ESTO, Fuego en el Ring]
3) Ángel de Plata, Fuego, Stuka Jr. b Arkangel de la Muerte, Nitro, Skándalo
4) Rey Bucanero, Sangre Azteca, Último Guerrero b Metro, Sagrado, Shocker
5) Héctor Garza, La Máscara, La Sombra DQ Felino, Naito, Negro Casas

Felino yanked off La Sombra’s mask for the straight fall loss. Metro was here for Valiente.

AAA held a press conference and early screening of their movie for the press yesterday. Somehow, I did not get an invite, but there’s a lot of articles out about it today. What you need to know:

– Movie cost 30 million pesos ($2.35 mil US), but they hope to make 80,000,000 ($6.27). That’d be a strong return of investment. They’ll open on 250 screens, and they’re thinking of a TV series or a movie if succesful.
– Obviously, that means they think it’ll do better than Campones de Lucha Libre did, and there’s talk about purposely spacing it away from that movie.
– Konnan says wrestlers are more relatable heroes than soccer players, because fans sit a lot closer to the ring. Parka says WWE is a fad, since Mexican wrestling is obviously much better.
– The movie will be dubbed in Japanese and English. They hope to send it to Japan, but there’s no real plans mentioned for elsewhere.
– The picture from the AAA site that kinda looked like Mr. Niebla is in fact Mr. Niebla. Movies take a while to make, what are you going to do.
– Also, and I only realized (or remembered) this a couple weeks ago: they’re calling AAA Sin Limite de Tiempo because there’s no limit in time – they’re traveling all around it, you see.
– The film director watched La Parka Jr. for a month to study how he acts in the ring. Making movies is tough.
– Movie includes La Parka Jr. winning a championship; clearly a work of fiction

Last weekend’s ratings, as noted by LLL down below:

01/08 SmackDown: 9.7
01/09 CMLL: 4.0
01/10 AAA: 3.7
01/11 Raw: 9.3 (19.0)

CMLL’s Best of 2009 show was a high mark for their ratings, while AAA’s Best Of was a lower than usual mark for them. Also not sure if it’s a blip but remember SmackDown ratings were doing mid 11’s back in October and have dropped off that mark since early November. Raw ratings are basically steady, but this is the lowest number we’ve gotten for them.

Terrible says he and Texano to Japan on 02/12. He was so excited, he had trouble sleeping at first.

Ovaciones has a short video interview with Super Nova about WWE.

Cronicas y Leyendas looks back at Hijo del Santo’s debut and Ultimo Guerrero taking Mr. Aguila’s mask.

Kcidis predicts the ending of Hector Garza & Ultimo Guerrero.

Segunda Caida starts a run of IWRG recap with the Castle of Terror show (no thoughts on the skit?), the Dr. Cerbero vs Suicida show, and Flor Metalica vs La Diabolica.

Ohtani’s Jacket writes about the IWRG handhelds 01/07/10 and Bushi vs Dr. Cerebro.

CMLL (MON) 01/18 Arena Puebla
1) Asturiano & SWAT vs Mr. Rafaga & Policeman
2) Bam Bam, Fantasy, Tzuki vs Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Universo 2000, Pequeño Violencia
3) Ángel de Oro, Ángel de Plata, Sagrado vs Nitro, Nosferatu, Shigeo Okumura
4) Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara, Valiente vs Dragon Rojo Jr., Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca
5) La Sombra, Shocker, Volador Jr. vs Felino, Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero

Tzuki is booked. Will he appear? Semimain is two third of the world trios champions vs Poder Mexica, while main is the tag team champions. (So probably no new feuds from this.)

  1. The GDL main event was Panther/Porky/Hijo del Fantasma vs Terrible/Texano/Mascara Magica according to Fuego en el Ring.

  2. For those who watched AAA out of Mexico this week: did they definitely wrap up the Best of 2009 this week? Could it be a 3 parter?

Based on the taping dates AAA just announced, I’m missing a show somewhere (or the 02/01 show is going live to air! which is probably not happening.)

    What I have now

    01/11 Best of part 2
    01/18 Chilpancingo taped 12/18
    01/25 Ecatpec taped 01/17
    02/01 Tehuacan taped 02/01
    02/08 Puebla taped 02/05
    02/15 Salamanca taped 02/08

  3. @thecubsfan: I didn’t catch the first show, and only caught the last match of the second show which was Wagner/Mesias from TripleMania. If they were building things up to the biggest match on their biggest show, that would make sense as the ending, but it seems more likely that they would be airing things in some sort of chronological order, so there could be one more show.

  4. Sounds like they’re doing 3 parts since it would be odd to finish off with the Triplemania match. Surely, they don’t want to admit to how shitty AAA’s been post Triplemania.

They’ll have to air some stuff covering the returning Foreign Legion faction, the Sexi-Fabi feud, Koslov’s departure/return, etc.

BTW, is the AAA best of stuff airing this week on Galavision?

  5. “Tzuki is booked. Will he appear?” It seems that’s one of the more frequently asked questions recently. I maybe wrong ( I have been many times),but I predit that Tzuki will show up. How come members of Los Shitheads don’t start no showing events, & disappear of the face of the earth ?

  6. I’m not sure if Fox Sports aired this over the weekend, but they are airing a new episode this afternoon which will have:

    3) Fabian el Gitano, Leono, Rush DQ Cancerbero, Raciel, Virus
    5) Máscara Dorada b Felino

Cancerbero and Raciel are both being listed as having debuted in December 2009. Looks like Fabian replaced Flash/Fuego. Yay for the former Romanos making TV. Boo for them having to submit to Leono and Fabian!

  7. @Alfredo: OK, so I could have corrected his name since I edited Flash out and put in Fabian el Gitano after copying and pasting the results. But, there has to be some hope that if he gets enough variations of his name, eventually one of them might wind up being somebody different who actually has talent.

  8. This is a stupid question since we are talking about the rights to Mexican wrestling gimmicks, but how does a company like AAA get away with using characters that they don’t claim to own the rights to who are no longer in the company in their movie (Niebla, Charly, and I’m sure there will be others by the time the movie actually comes out)? This would seem to be particularly problematic since they are fighting for ownership of so many gimmicks with luchadors who have already left the company. I guess it is possible that they had everyone sign off on being included way back when the movie was first started, but that seems like it would have required them to have thought way too far ahead for AAA.

  9. @Alan: With Charly, AAA would make the case they own the character (in the same way they own Psicosis and Mascarita Dorada, and might eventually use another person in the character).

Mr. Niebla is tricker. The only thing that makes sense is your guess – either back when they were figuring out who’d be in the movie, or maybe even having the wrestlers sign over those rights when they signed with the company. Niebla didn’t have much leverage back when he joined the company, it’s hard to imagine he’d say no.

This sort of thing isn’t unusual. I’m just reminded about how, in the early 90s WWF, there was a TV taping where all the wrestlers were coerced into basically signing in their TV royalties away if they wanted to continue to work there.

In that case, Jesse Ventura refused to sign, eventually sued the company and won. I doubt that’s going to happen here, unless/until there’s a lot of money coming in that way and they’re not getting their fair share.

@Arnold: Hard to say. Dos Jr. was unmasked the first day they had him on TV, Sicodelico was mostly masked. I would guess Super Nova is unmasked very early and the internet freaks out again.

  10. @Arnold: I’m guessing the WWE wants another mask to sell at merch stands, so maybe they’ll create a mask for him. I know Dos Caras Jr., came in without a mask, but he’s a heavyweight, so WWE probably figured he could get over without the mask. Dos did work a few spot shows with the mask on.

I expect Nova to work some of the smaller spot shows this month, before ever working FCW arena.

  11. I know Dos appeared at least once with a mask before they regimmicked him. Since Nova has already appeared as a jobber on ECW unmasked, I’m guessing he’s going to be unmasked. Interesting to see what they do with Incognito? I’m hoping they bill him as Mystico.

  12. @Tim: Would be interesting to see him use the name Mystico in developmental. Are you going to Orlando/FCW next week?
