Okumura beats Maximo, Octagon talks his futbol career

Cornermen were Naito & Super Brazo. Maximo took the first, Okumura won the second. Okumura faked a low blow in the third, Tigre Hispano started to fall for it…but Maximo picked him up and kept wrestling. Maximo battles, still lost clean with a reverse DDT.

The Japanese all remain with their hair; back when this was announced, that was the reason why this seemed like the best possible chance for a Okumura win. Still, it’s a significant upset. Also, perhaps the tag match for the end of the year isn’t as set as we’d think – Okumura still has his hair, so they could make it a trios. CMLL prefers doing apuesta matches that are all hair or all mask, not mixing the two. All the sudden Vangelis being in Friday’s match may have some extra meaning, as crazy as the idea of Vangelis in a major main event sounds. I don’t think that’s the outcome here, but it’s not impossible either.

Okumura goes to 1-2 in apuesta matches, winning his first hair match (and the first one out of the cage – maybe that was his weakness.) Maximo loses his hair for the second time in 8 months (previously to Texano, in GDL.)

Octagon tells Reforma how he could’ve been on the America team. See, he was a fantastic soccer player when he was young, so he competed in a tryout camp when in 1976. Of the 1,500 people in the camp, only 5 were selected to move on to the academy, and Octagon was one of the five. However, his partners had always taught him the importance of education, so he decline the invitation to finish his school. After Octagon earned his law degree in 1982, he tried out again, but the young kids had passed him by. Like many a failed athlete, he became a wrestler instead. This is an incredible story, and I mean that in all the meanings of the word incredible.

You know, that story sounds actually completely plausible after I just suggested Vangelis in the main event of one of CMLL’s major shows. I take it all back!

SuperLuchas #340 has Mistico losing his title to Tiger Mask. Nice work on the cover to make it look like Mistico lost to a martinete, a horribly illegal move. Also, the odd IWRG/Mexican Trios angle continues with Fantasma talking about how the IWRG guys definitely can ask for a title shot against the CMLL guys. I’m totally intrigued not even exactly about where this is going, but the idea that it might be going anywhere at all.
