Tirantes out of AAA, Strong Man debuts in Puebla, AAA action figures

Starting December 1st, the US’s Federal Trade Commission will require all writers on the web to disclose all freebies or payments they get from companies for reviewing their products, in a clear and conspicuous manner, or get a massive fine. Massive fines are not in the luchablog/luchawiki budget this year, so now’s a good time to list all of the people who’ve sent freebies or payments to get their products reviewed on this here site:

I feel much better now. Actually, I do get a freebie, but since I think I’ve never gotten around to reviewing magazines (sorry!), I think I’m good on that. You know, there are sites where this bit would vastly more entertaining. (Not that this has a prayer of being enforced.)

Apparently, both Luchas 2000 and Box Y Lucha say Tiratnes Sr. has left AAA to join Los Perros del Mal. Just like Charly Manson, he was involved in major storyline (though it’ll be easier to remove Tirantes) and was a long time fixture of AAA. Tirantes had been a part of AAA since the very first show they put on, and obviously his son is a referee there too. Of the four AAA referees, Tirantes Sr. was the one who seemed to turn up on TV least in recent years, though he’d always work the major shows and often the main events when they wanted to do a disputed finish (2008’s TripleMania comes to mind.)

I’d always guessed Tirantes had some other backstage role and they were just phasing out of the ring, but maybe he didn’t and being off TV and off spot so much for the feud with the Roldans was costing him too much. All I know is, of the original people who worked on the first AAA show, only Octagon and Pepe Casas have been there the whole time.

CMLL (MON) 10/05 Arena Puebla [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Blue Center & Centella de Oro b Akron & Espiritu Maligno
2) Inquisidor, René Guajardo Jr., Tiger Kid b Guerrero Maya Jr., Sensei, Trueno
3) Ángel Azteca Jr., Ángel de Oro, Ángel de Plata DQ Nosferatu, Vangelis, Virus
4) La Máscara, Toscano, Valiente b Dragon Rojo Jr., Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca
5) Héctor Garza, Shocker, Strong Man b Ray Mendoza Jr., Terrible, Texano

STRONG MAN WIN. Rudos all tried to take out Strong Man, but they were not match. Texano got stretched out after taking a German Suplex to end it. Strong Man, especially if we’re really going with ‘Strong Man’ as his name, should only talk as if he’s the Incredible Hulk. Strong Man SMASH! Strong Man CRUSH! Strong Man HOPE TO FIGHT BETTER THAN RAY MENDOZA JUNIOR!

La Mascara got Sangre Azteca with the campana. I think that record is skipping. DQ in the tercera was for Virus fouling Angel de Oro. Guerrero Maya Jr. took a stretcher ride after Inquisidor’s martinete-lilke finish. Akron debuted, lost.

AAA (SAT) 10/03 Plaza de Toros San Sebastian, Comitan, Chiapas [KrisZ]
1) Mr. Sombra b Guerrero Negro, Nocturno, Rey Violencia, Sombra Maligna [copa prinsu 2009]
2) Harahel b Fuego Nuevo [Chiapas MIDDLE]
3) Lobo Warrior b Gringo Loco, Rastaman, Capitan Furia, Dizzy, Murcy Jr., Grana Man [cage, mask]
4) Joe Lider & Nicho el Millionario b Crazy Boy & Extreme Tiger [AAA TAG]
5) El Mesías & Marco Corleone DQ Dr. Wagner Jr. & Electroshock

Rare AAA title defense at a spot show. Not the IWRG Gringo Loco won the cage match, and Lobo Warrior was announced as Brayan Sanchez, 10 years of wrestling, from Comitan.

ESTO hypes tonight’s Arena Mexico card as maybe Villano V getting along with this week’s partners (Terrible, Texnao) better than last week. The special match has five of the 12 in the mask match. With V5 in the main event, I’m thinking good tickets are still available.

As mentioned yesterday, Playmates toys will produce AAA action figures starting in 2010, as well as “role-play masks and play-sets.” Maybe you can buy a Laredo Kid mask and play the role of a guy who never gets out of the first hour. Cibernetico, La Parka, and Octagon are particularity name checked. This is deal done via the previous Cookie Jar deal. Besides all articles inevitably including a picture from a CMLL match, this is the weird part of the press release:

Lucha Libre AAA has been the premier wrestling league in Mexico for over 18 years and enjoys a near 80 per cent share of ticket sales domestically

I’d love to see how they get 80%. Maybe 80% of ticket sales by revenue? Even that’s probably not right. Are they tracking CMLL’s attendance plus tracking AAA attendance and doing the mat, or just making things up? (Ah, there it is.) Also, check my math because I’ve been off lately, but 1992 to 2009 is 17. Anyway, getting back to things that actually matter, if AAA is going to be making their own action figures and their own masks, are they going to be selling them just in stores, or at AAA events? If they sell them at shows, will that mean the current gray market vendors are going to be pushed out? Times are changing.

AAA has notes from the Pena mass. Only non-AAA wrestler name checked as showing was Alebrije. Also, Javi still exists. AAA’s also on the radio tonight at 10 PM, and they’ve got web streaming link.

Record has an interview with Jaque Mate, teasing a longer version in this month’s magazine.

Mr. Niebla threatens STRONG MAN and Super Porky. There’s an idea for a team. Fuego en el Ring also has the third part of their interview with el Vengador, as well as an article on the Occidente Welterweight title and .

El Hijo del Santo talks about the importance of customer service when running a business.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update and the link to this week’s Ras de Lona.

Ohtani’s Jacket and Raging Noodles continues in it’s best of 2000s series with Perro Jr. vs Universo 2000’s hair match from 2006.

PIERROTH (THU) 10/29 Arena Isabel de Cuernavaca [EdR]
1) Comodiin, Electroshock, Flama vs Hechicero, Nahualt, Raksas
2) Orito, Pequeño Olímpico, Platita, Último Dragoncito vs Leopardito, Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Universo 2000, Pierrothito
3) Black Spirit, Canelo Casas, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Cien Caras Jr., Hijo del Cien Caras, Máscara Año 2000 Jr.
4) Hijo del Lizmark, LA Park, Nosferatu, Toscano vs Fuerza Guerrera, Head Hunter I, Pierrothito, Veneno

This is the show to honor Pierroth, with a mixture of indy guys and CMLL ones. He’s listed in the main event. He could certainly get away with doing nothing more than standing in the corner for 15 minutes, but even that seems like it’d be an amazing amount for him.

Semimain looks like it’s a match of second generation wrestlers, fake and real. Lost track of if Canelo Casas is supposed to be real or fake at this point.

  1. The Playmates Toys deal is pretty interesting, as they don’t really seem to have any good licensing deals here in the US anymore other than Ninja Turtles. Yeah, they do Terminator and Star Trek shit, but kids don’t play with that stuff.

  2. You seem to be quite fond of STRONG MAN. We’ll see how that changes when you have to sit through his TV matches.;)

If two people are going to put together a list of the best matches from this decade involving wrestlers who don’t leave their feet, shouldn’t someone be in charge of giving credit where credit is due to wrestlers who put on good matches by taking to the air? I mean this is getting pretty one-sided. (not that I’ve seen the list aside from when you note which matches are being reviewed)

  3. Now I’m starting to get skeptical about this influx of AAA guys in Perros del Mal. Tirantes was already Konnan’s chief lieutenant in the storyline and Konnan has already been in the press talking about wanting to bring in PdM to align with him. Until Manson actually shows up in Arena Mexico this totally smells like a work.

  4. @KrisZ: Agreed…

… unless the PdM really show up on Televisa next week or the week after.

That’s the only thing that baffles me here. Why would AAA start an angle with a company that they will be competeing with for TV ratings? Or a company that may get their Sunday time slot if things go really well? Or maybe AAA is working Televisa and this is a way to get a second TV show.

Things seem to getting quite interesting heading into the winter.

  5. @LLL: I couldn’t justify paying fifty bucks to sit ringside for three matches in a nightclub, so I opted for one down, the $30 tickets “Table seating directly behind the Ringside section.”

  6. You guys are going to be down with The Strongman when he comes into that 12 man cage mask and rips everyones masks off himself to win the match. He’s so strong, their heads will still be in them.

  7. @Rob: We haven’t made any sort of list yet. We’re just searching for stuff. Besides, Universo 2000 leaves his feet. Yes, he does. I’ll give anything a fair shake. What flying stuff should we watch?

  8. Once PdM is on Televisa, both CMLL and AAA will want to do an invasion angle.

Strongronda. That’s how I see him getting over. As a muscle freak show.

  9. @KrisZ: and @Rob: is the theory that AAA set up the main event for one of their biggest shows of the year, and then dropped it as part of an invasion angle just to work the internet fans? I don’t have much of any faith in AAA management, but this seems like it is beyond bad booking. This would sound more like promotional suicide. I may be proven wrong, or this could be a shoot that they turn into a work, but this would move beyond Russodome.

For what it is worth, Perro and Damian were on 3ra Caida tonight and said that the show taped on the 11th would air on the 17th at 9 pm. When asked when the next show would be, Perro talked about how there would be 8 luchas on the show on the 11th but didn’t answer the question about the next show. My guess is that with eight matches, they will spread this taping out over two to four tv shows. Also interesting that it will be airing on Saturday nights against the AAA Lucha Libre Premiere show on Fox Sports.

I’m looking into taking in the Ecatepec taping, but haven’t decided if it is worth the effort to get out of the city on Sunday evening yet.

  10. @MPJ-DK: Yes, it is. There’s been a guy on the indies who’s been using in the last couple years, and I think the story he’s telling is much like Tiger Kid/Puma King – he’s related to the Casas, but he’s not actually their son. It may or may not be true.

  11. @ohtani’s jacket: It’s probably just the way you guys started off that I found odd. Perro vs Universo? Really? The match was a parody. When all three groups (smarks, marks & reporters who treat Lucha as a serious sport) can agree in unison that a match is a joke… it just might be a joke. And then you guys went and reviewed Perrito vs U2K which wasn’t awful nor was it great (my opinion of course). It just seems strange that the Dinamitas are being considered at all for anything related to a BEST OF from this decade.

Like I said before, I’m surprised you guys didn’t start with Atlantis vs Villano III which seems the sure fire best match from Mexico this decade.

Other matches I would nominate and realize very few would second:

    – Mistico vs Averno 1/30/05 GDL

    – 2 of the 3 Habanas vs Marvin/Virus/Volador Jr. matches although in all honesty I find the 3/26/04 match with the CMLL midcarders to be better than anything the Habanas ever did

    – Santo vs Panther from Monterrey

    – 10/8/00 Monterrey atomicos match

And if you dare consider any very recent stuff…

    – Sombra/Dos Jr. vs Averno/Mephisto

    – 2008 Kids Day trios titles match

    – Sombra vs Efesto from Dec. ’08

  12. @Rob: The reason we haven’t done Atlantis/Villano yet is because I already know it’s a great match. Right now, I’m searching for stuff I haven’t seen before so that I can fill up a top 20 or top 25. Perro, Sr./Universo was awesome, and I thought it completely smoked Perro, Jr./Universo. Universo was a great main event worker. I’ll see what I can do about finding your recommended matches. Cheers.
