CMLL announces random 12 man cage mask match for 10/18

If you’re wondering if you missed an angle building this up, well, so I am.

Next Sunday is an Arena Mexico fan appreciation show, and apparently they’re back to trying to fill the house for those shows and those shows only. They’re actually running the cage match on the 18th, so it’s Sunday after this Sunday. It does, in fact, continue using the fan appreciation shows to build up a big match the following week, though this is still super quick.

That gives us this 12 man cage match:

  • Pegasso
  • Tigre Blanco
  • Skandalo
  • Hooligan
  • Ángel de Oro
  • Tiger Kid
  • Rey Cometa
  • Flash
  • Pólvora
  • Dr. X
  • Astro Boy
  • Arkangel

Gut reaction is Tigre Blanco, since we’ve heard the retirement talk and he hasn’t been as active in recent years. The Tuareg guys, even Skandalo, make a little sense. Otherwise, it’s just a random unbuilt up mask match with six thirteen days of build. These guys aren’t scheduled for this Sunday’s card – there’s a trios on Tuesday with some of them, but that’s it.

I’m sure this will totally turn around business.

  1. So, does this replace one of the other matches on the card or is it just an addition? Kind of surprised they didn’t throw Ultimo and Volador in just so they could claim to have kind of followed through on the challenge.

  2. @Alan: I screwed it up originally, but it’s for the following week. But, yea, they should’ve just thrown in UG and Volador. 12 or 14 is about the same.

  3. This is actually one of the rarest occurances in wrestling outside of a promotion booked by Vince Russo. CMLL is killing two things at once!

1: Cage matches. This is pointless, won’t draw and cheapens future cage matches although to be quite honest – they’ve already done that this year with the minis involvement in them.

2: Arena Mexico. CMLL.com lists this Sunday as a fan appreciation show @ Arena Mexico and also says this cage match is happening @ Arena Mexico. So they are running the building 6 times in 13 days. Keep in mind both Sundays will be discounted prices (AFAIK) so as an average family thinking about going to Arena Mexico – are you more inclined to pay regular prices to see Warrior vs Yujiro and Casas vs Angel De Oro or are you waiting to pay cheaper prices and treat your kids to a cage match and Mistico main event?

    I don’t get this one.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against the match. In theory all these guys have been feuding for a while now since they are constantly matched up against each other. It would have been nice to see a rare singles mask match with nobody knowing the results (Blanco vs Dr. X, Flash vs Polvora) or even a Relevos Suicidas match (Cometa/Dr. X vs Pegasso/Polvora) like the old days. But they seem hell bent on killing this cage concept so all the power to them!

  4. @Rob: Ugh, they are running this at Arena Mexico? I’d actually go see it at Coliseo, but I’m not too psyched about seeing it Arena Mexico.

  5. @Alan: I’m pretty sure they are unless the website has it wrong…

“Un evento extraordinario en la Arena México, ¡¡¡regresa la jaula!!!”

If it’s wrong I hope they put up a message discrediting Cubsfan for spreading false information.;)

  6. I guess the bigger question is – who gets a kinda, sorta meaningful victory? the old low carder or the young guy who might actually move up the card at some point?

  7. Ras de Lona might be the most well-produced show in Mexico right now. They did follow up on the paintball game. Continuity.

I wish CMLL luck at Sportel. Costs big money to get in and even more to display(as opposed to “walking the floor”). I wish they would go to SportelUSA in Miami. In reality, there really are no networks for them in the US though. Televisa works with Galavision. Telemundo works with WWE. LATV with MVS, and MVS won’t let LATV show Guerreros del Ring. I’ve wondered if ESPN Deportes would air CMLL since they seem to like Lucha, but the timeslot would get fucked up every week due to live sports.

  8. I get a channel on dishnetwork called SíTV, which appears to be a latino BET. I dunno why they don’t go after lucha programming, considering it is all mostl Latino Laugh Festival and NY Undercover reruns.
The problem could be its english language…

  9. I think SiTV is a Televisa/Univision deal. You’re right. The moment has come for English language Lucha. I think there’s a guy who posts here who uploads Lucha with his own English commentary. Can’t remember his name.
