Freelance, Mexico, notes, Puebla

I think the AAA video needs it’s own post. Let’s save that for later.

IWRG (THU) 10/01 Arena Naucalpan [twitter/gladiatores, Black Terry Jr. @ box y lucha]
1) Halcon 2000 b Imperial
2) Carta Brava Jr. & Hijo del Signo b Eragon & Jack
3) Bushi, Exodia, Trauma I b Gringo Loco, Menfis, Xibalba
4) Avisman b Freelance [IWRG IC Light]
5) Barba Roja, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Pirata Morgan Jr. b Hombre Bala Jr., Oficial 911, Oficial Fierro

Not sure where Oficial AK-47 went, but Hombre Bala got moved up and Trauma I got added. Still think they’re setting up a trios title match here.

The big news from the card was Freelance being hurt in the second match. He went for an Asai, Avisman moved, and Freelance hit the rail chest first. That was the end of that match.

Previews for tonight’s Arena Mexico show.
ESTO – quotes Ultimo, who sees the main event as Ultimo Guerrero coming to the save of Mistico and CMLL, since they can’t beat the Japanese without him

Less interesting than past shows. Still waiting on them to pull the trigger for Yujiro/Warrior, and they might be holding that off all the way to the year end show (don’t think they will.) The only other things of note is Angel de Oro getting a consolation semifinal, and the lightning match is Metro/Euforia. Why wasn’t Metro in the Gran Alternativa? (Maybe they plan on saving him for when he gets his real gimmick.) I don’t expect there to be any response to the Gran Alternativa backlash, but I guess we’ll see. Reports had last week’s show at a disappointing 8,000 attendance, and I figure this’ll be below.

And now a section I’ll title “stuff I read this week but keep forgetting to mention because I don’t have a link to hand you, but probably should’ve been mentioned days ago”

– In this week’s SuperLuchas, Princesa Sujei mentions she’s had talks with CHIKARA about coming in.
– On his biweekly F4WOnline interview, Steve Sims says it’s always been standard AAA practice not to tell anyone finishes to their matches until TV tapings, so what Charly was asking for was a bit unusual. Steve also says Charly expected Chessman to leave AAA with him, but Chessman declined. The WON says AAA did pay for Charly’s most recent surgery, for what it’s worth.
– This week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter has a lot more AAA notes.
* They’ve hired six writers to work on storylines. If they’re just hired, that can only help. If they’re the people who’ve been writing since TripleMania, boy do they suck. Note that six writers are more writers than matches on many TV tapings, and it’s not like they’re writing anything on the first half of the shows.
* Mr. Kennedy was the first guy looked at for the mystery spot. When he was booked elsewhere, they tried Umaga, but didn’t agree to money. Then they went to Latin Lover, who would only come in if he got to win the match, and they decided it wasn’t a good idea to give the big win to someone who’s not a full timer. Perhaps they have learned something from TripleMania?
* Negro Casas tried to get Joe Lider & Nicho to jump to CMLL, but only if they brought the tag belts with them. Lider & Nicho wisely have not jumped.
* AAA feels like their fans are interested in the product for the AAA brand, and not for individual wrestlers. Konnan (via Meltzer) compares this to what WWE does. Still, they’re running far few spot shows of late because local promoters don’t think they can make any money.

In an interview with Fuego, Okumura says he knows won the Gran Alterntiva the wrong way, but he wanted the chance – and also Yujiro didn’t want to team with a Mexican anyway. He’s still looking for that trios title shot, and says Liger wanted to stay in Mexico longer but New Japan told him he had to come home.

AAA notes Mesias wore a Kahoz mask at Heroes Inmortales, and looks back at when Pena used that name..

Estrella del Ring writes about the upcoming Pierroth tribute show.

Ohtani’s Jacket and Raging Noodles are on a quest to find the best matches of the 00’s, and start with Perro Aguayo Sr. vs Universo 2000, their 03/01 hair vs mask match.

CMLL (MON) 10/05 Arena Puebla
1) Akron & Espiritu Maligno vs Blue Center & Centella de Oro
2) Guerrero Maya Jr., Sensei, Trueno vs Inquisidor, René Guajardo Jr., Tiger Kid
3) Ángel Azteca Jr., Ángel de Oro, Ángel de Plata vs Nosferatu, Vangelis, Virus
4) La Máscara, Toscano, Valiente vs Dragon Rojo Jr., Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca
5) Héctor Garza, Shocker, Strong Man vs Ray Mendoza Jr., Terrible, Texano

Speaking of things I keep forgetting to post. I hope they’re really going with “Strong Man” as his name, that’s exactly what it should be in Mexico. Gets right to the point.

I see an Akron in Xibalba’s group in 2007, but nothing else. Hopefully we get an interview with him too.

  1. I think we should force OJ to watch recent AAA.:)

Glad to see someone else in agreement with me that AAA’s been awful post-Triplemania and not in the crappy previous 10 years of AAA sorta way were you still had storylines that made sense and a much stronger undercard.

Its funny all this talk about them improving ‘workrate’ and sure they removed that one trios match that was usually all the old guys that sucked in the past, but they replaced it with the garbage matches, still have the crappy main events, and they’ve managed to remove the good opening match from their shows or at least cut it back to 10 minutes. What’s going to happen if they do stop the Apache family feud angle? Even that’s kind of starting to run its course, but I really worry about an all-women’s feud considering the foreign side, will have a difficult time matching what the old AAA women’s matches were with Las Brujas vs. Morenos or the later Apaches, Morenos, Tiffany, Estrellita group.

BTW, this Apache Comp thing is going to take FOREVER!!!!;)

  2. 2 random things:

    1. LuchandoLibre says the rope broke during the main event of the IWRG show.

    2. Surprised Hombre Bala Jr. didn’t turn since he is “related” to his opponents.

  3. Oh, and someone really needs to tell OJ and RN they started looking the wrong place. Atlantis/Villano III happened in 2000 so that should have been up first.

Kinda afraid to see the criticism upcoming in later years though.:(

  4. Slightly different format on tonight’s TDN Noche de Punos. No MMA at the end, but I think they filled up most of the extra time with boxing. Maybe a little extra time for lucha. Rey Bucanero was the in studio guest tonight. Ending was rough though, with Euforia geting counted out after Metro screwed up catching him on an over the top dive. I’v enever been very good at assigning blame in these cases, so I might just be making a judgment call based on general feelings about Metro. Similar move to what happened to Garza in Puebla not long ago. Euforia was stretchered out after teh countout.

They aired the opener and the lightning match. Opener was about what you would expect (not all that great). Lightning was OK from what I saw, but ended with

  5. @Alan: putting the above post in the correct order so it makes more sense. Typing while watching baseball is dangerous.

  6. Even though Latin Lover isn’t full time, he’s still an integral part of AAA. He should have won the tournament. The Pena Memorial should go to somebody who embodies AAA like a Latin Lover, La Parka, or Octagon. In the past three years it’s gone to Charly Manson, Messias, and now Cibernetico. The first two guys who won weren’t even AAA guys (according to the story line) and although Cibernetico is supposedly AAA now, he spent most of his time in AAA trying to destroy everything Pena created (in the storyline). Even his character now is not somebody who stand up for tradition.

So I’ll agree with Latin Lover on this one. And fuck AAA for going to Ken Anderson and Umaga before going to Latin Lover.
