Lucha Libre Premier press conference notes

Luchando Libre has the point system for the Lucha Libre Premier championship, from yesterday’s press conference to hype it. (So, no, it’s not canceled.) This is delightful:

  • everyone on the winning team gets 3 points
  • person who personally picks up the win gets 3 points
  • “whoever makes the most dramatic movement of the show”, 1 point.
  • DQs will cost you one point

Top 2 point gets face off at the end of the season for the championship.

Chances AAA has this all planned out now: 0%
Chances AAA keeps this all straight: 30%

I’d like to obsessively track this on the site, because that’s what I do, but the best wrestler of the show point is going to be tough to figure from results. I guess they could make this clear, but, uh, they won’t. They’ll just do random matches, and they we’ll end up with 2 of Wagner, Cibernetico and Mesias (if they’re all there) having a match at the end. I know this. And yet…

At the press conference yesterday, the two mystery women were announced as Rain (announced under her real name) and Koa-Marie Gabric, a WWE 2007 Diva Search woman who I have absolutely no recollection of. I’m sure she’ll be fantastic. Konnan will be color commentator for the show, for those who are in withdrawal.

The Televisa Deportes doesn’t even specifically mention the channel the show is on, so not a lot of news there.

First show is tonight. Results are appreciated.

Edit: The Koa-Marie Gabric name is still in my search box, and I’m thinking about how I know I’ve seen that name before, somewhere. And then it finally clicks – Koa Marie is the heel valet on all the GALLI shows and I’ve seen her plenty of times. She’s a lovely person who works well as the hot girl with the jerk boyfriend, but…you know, maybe she’s been working matches some place else, since GALLI hasn’t really run women’s matches and I’m sure she and Rain will work out something in advance, but from the physical interactions I’ve seen her in GALLI, in-ring wrestler is not the role for her at this point. (She’s Nikki, really.) I’m happy for her getting the opportunity, just like it’s cool every time Gringo Loco’s name pops up in IWRG, but this is not a good casting decision by AAA.

  1. I sort of assume that this is being set up for someone like Marco to win, not one of the usual three main eventers. Since I am always wrong about these things, I should probably apologize to Corleone for ruining any chance that he has to win.

This just seems to be the perfect spot for him though. AAA can claim that they are pushing him harder than CMLL ever did and give him a shiny trophy or whatever the winner gets and yet not push him into the main event on the main show or have him get a one on one feud with Mesias, Ciber, or Wagner leading to a ppv match. Plus, I would bet the crowd will be more favorable to him in the smaller, more expensive setting than in larger shows like Triplemania.

He also seems like the most likely of the top guys to pick up the move of the night bonus. Of course, since this is AAA they may determine that chokeslamming Wagner through a table or hitting Mesias with lightbulbs is the most impressive move. I wonder if this is going to be a per TV show point bonus or per night?

Since I don’t see them having any of the top three put him over, that would leave Kenzo or Electro to be the runner up.

  2. Well, since Televisa published the note, I guess we can dismiss the “Televisa will be angry” angle.

The point system is interesting, I had talked about it some years back, on how it would be that all of the sudden GdA are below say Tuareg (although they did not existed at the time) in the lineups because GdA loose all their matches and Tuareg won theirs hitting in the ranking, as opposed to the current “who cares if we lose” approach.

    I would have:

5 for the guy picking up the win.
    3 for teammates
    1 for losing team members
    0 for guy being defeated

I must say I never thought they go to the extreme of taking points off from DQs, but now that they do, I’d take 2 points.

I think the ranking would lead to more angles or better angles, for instance why is Super Fly turning? He was invited to la Legion, but that’s history now, it would make sense for him to be angry at Laredo or Aero Star picking up points, or Koslov being angry at being pinned (as he is now), not that it matters much as things are now.

Of course, it’s going to end up being a real mess…

  3. Yeah this sounds awful.

Let’s just hope that ex-WWE chick learns from Nikki and doesn’t do a spot where she “flashes” her rival to distract him and then turns to clearly show the camera she is wearing a bra. Someone point that out to the Botchmania guy.

  4. “The teams participated seemed near random, as some teams got many more matches than other teams, and at least one match up was repeated.”

“One team, Charly Manson and Pirata Morgan, ended up being a team of a rudo and at tecnico, as Manson changed sides while the tournament was ongoing, though it did not play into any of the matches. Another team, Super Fly & Rey Cometa, became Super Fly & Pegasso by the end of the tournament, with no explanation of the change.”

  5. @Alan: The winner gets a shiny trophy? Gotta be Koslov then. He left CMLL just to get a shiny fake title for all of 3 weeks, if they give him a shiny fake trophy he’ll probably sign a lifetime exclusivity deal with the company!

  6. @Rob: I don’t actually know if there is a shiny trophy involved in this, but it seems likely.

My only real point was that I don’t see a point in running a tournament to crown a “champion” which I presume will only come up again if they remember to run the tournament again next year and having it go to one of the three people who are likely to hold the Megachampionship anytime in the near future.

  7. “La semana pasada, OCESA nos había mencionado que el evento se cancelaba, pero finalmente tiene luz verde”

Ocampo cleared it up. He said he called OCESA and they told him the event was canceled.

  8. @LLL: [EDITED – feels Ocampo is bitter at AAA and his comments should be taken with that in mind. Also, thinks Ocampo is gay.]

  9. There is a Roger who takes pictures for Luchas 2000 magazine.

What are the odds that is the same guy? No hidden agenda whatsoever.

  10. @Michael: Random question! I think she was usually with Steve Boz, but also was a lot with the Underground heel faction, with Tony Scapone and whoever else. It seemed to change from show to show – last show I saw her, she was with the cowboy guy.

  11. Might as well, the full trivia question is:

Koa, the girl that teamed with Fabi Apache on AAA’s Fox Sports Espanol show used to manage what current IWRG star?

  12. I was not aware that asking people is cheating, as told to me by a trivia veteran. But what do I know.
