picking Block B of the Universal tournament

Last week’s winner was an unlikely one. Unlikely enough to knock out a lot of the possibilities for this week.

Highly unlikely, given Texano Jr. is the other finalist

* Mephisto – got his big win for the year anyway
* Ephesto – got his big win for the year anyway
* Negro Casas – not in Texano’s group, but match wouldn’t work at this point.

Very slightly more likely

* Ultimo Guerrero – possible because the Avernos/Guerreros
* La Mascara – only works if they decided to make the finals of the Universal tournament should be a tercera.

Alternates to the obvious
* Hector Garza – though, if the tournament to crown the best champion ends with Texano Jr. vs Hector Garza, the terrorists have won. Hector feels like one of the guys who just exists in the upper midcard, but doesn’t really mean anything. Texano beating Hector would not mean a lot of Texano (unless they went on to do a hair/hair match), and Hector beating Texano would not mean a lot.
* Volador Jr. – this, on the other hand, would be quite different to have Volador/Texano on top – new stars, maybe even a new feud.

Impossibly obvious

* Mistico – duh

It’s Kid’s Day, so Mistico will be as over as he is on any day of the year. On the other hand, it’s clear that Mistico was not picked to win this tournament when it was announced (because he wasn’t in the tournament at that point) and most promotions probably would not consider putting him over here. Winning the overall tournament doesn’t help him Mistico, and Texano beating him would be too big of a step up for Texano for the fans to accept (though there would be those happy for Mistico to lose at any time.) If Volador or Garza or anyone else, you probably end up with a new rivalry you can follow up with. Mistico’s already feuding with half a dozen guys to no end.

Still, those things are true in the Leyenda de Plata tournament every year, and Mistico’s won three straight times. It’s tough to bet against the man. I’m picking Volador, because a tournament where Negro Casas cheats to beat Mistico and Volador beats Negro in the final would continue one feud and nicely springboard Volador in to next week’s final. (Plus, he’s the number #2 tecnico.) I just don’t feel sure about it.

  1. I voted Mistico to win Block B tonight. I mean it’s Kids Day who else it going to win. Although, CMLL could suprise us again, and have someone else win it . Because it’s Kids Day a tecnico is winning this, if not Mistico im thinking La Mascara will face Texano Jr. in finals.

  2. By picking the same outcome we’ve virtually assured that Volador Jr. will job in the first round to Efesto or Mephisto.

Remind me next time to predict the OPPOSITE of what I want to happen.

  3. YOU SEE.

    YOU SEE NOW?

YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE???

That’s some awfully strange booking they did tonight considering it’s Kids Day and all.

  4. @Rob: Wow I did not see that coming. DAMN 0-4.:) But I got a feeling my luck will change tommorrow night. My predictions on what happens at Triplemania, is about 85% corrrect ( or at least I think so. :))

  5. Absolutely bizarre. I don’t even have a problem with the outcome (I took Mistico in the poll, only because it seemed too obvious to take anyone else), but the whole tournament has a very random feel to it. Has it ever been confirmed that it is for a new belt?

Ultimo vs Texano could be interesting, but it is now hard to predict if they are running this to set up some angle at the end of it all or what. Or they could just be picking winners names out of a hat.

  6. ~THE RETURN OF THE HAT!

    What confuses me is:

    – Mistico/Negro… on opposite sides of the bracket?

    – Beating Mistico on Kids Day?

  7. The whole booking looks like bizzaro kids day. Why do a tecnico/tecnico and rudo/rudo semifinals on kids day? Why knock Volador out in the first round?

Not kids day related, but why have your two newest champs lose in the first round?

  8. Cubs, I love the luchadb. I don’t use it nearly often enough to answer my own questions, but I decided to tonight.

If I’m looking at this correctly, this was Mistico and Ultimo Guerrero’s 19th singles match, but his first ever victory.

This doesn’t seem like it could possibly be true. Am I reading something incorrectly?

  9. Mistico being stretchered out on Kids Day? This could not possibly have been the planned outcome.

  10. Sounds like they busted out the infamous 2/25/05 spot except this time as the finish. Mistico missed a tornillo dive (Ultimo moved) and then the Guerrero Especial did Mistico in.

Main event sounds ROUGH. I am so not going to be around to catch that tomorrow.
