previewing tonight’s tournament

Like I said on Saturday, there’s no real overwhelming favorite or impossible underdog in Block A. It would be a big surprise if Dragon Rojo or Mascara Dorada won, but it’s a exponentially more possible than when CMLL put guys like Loco Max and Stuka in the Leyenda de Plata two years ago.

Still, just to handicap the group for wagering purposes:

Strong Chances

  • Averno – besides being Averno, has the bonus of being an easy match up versus tecnicos and half the rudos
  • La Sombra – having him win this all would be a fine way to anger Mistico more

Outside Chances

  • Sangre Azteca – his hopes of getting that match with UG seems low, but it would make CMLL champ sense to make the guy with the two national championships beat all the world champs
  • Black Warrior – because he’s Black Warrior. No real other reason.

Would Mean A Huge Step Up

  • Hijo del Fantasma
  • Texano Jr. – the company seems high on both guys as future stars, but not enough to main event a Friday show with them now

Just Don’t Look Bad

  • Dragon Rojo Jr. – probably okay for this to be a short match
  • Mascara Dorada – though, if they have renewed confidence in him, could be fun to reintroduce him with a near miss

Matches Which Would Be Fun (if they got any time)*

  • Averno versus most of the tecnicos
  • Sombra too

* – they won’t. Or the rules will have been changed since they were announced and it’ll be a cibernetico.

  1. I feel like this tournament is designed for the guys who fall into the Outside Chance/Step Up categories. It looks like they want to establish someone as a new “It” guy; so really in my mind either Texano Jr. or Hijo del Fantasma has the best chance to win it.

  2. I think Mistico spoke out last week about his “push” because he isnt going over in this. I think we are going to see Averno vs. Ultimo in the final.

  3. This is a tough one to call b/c we don’t even know the format. Single elimination? Torneo Cibernetico? I’m gonna guess it’ll be a single elimination tournament since we’re doing a tournament of mainly singles champs (or that’s the idea at least). So I’ll go with…

    Texano Jr. over Sangre Azteca
La Sombra over Dragon Rojo Jr.
Hijo Del Fantasma over Black Warrior
    Averno over Mascara Dorada

    Sombra over Texano Jr.
    Averno over Fantasma’s kid

    Averno over Sombra

    If it’s a Torneo Cibernetico…

Order of elimination: Mascara Dorada, Dragon Rojo Jr., Texano Jr., Sangre Azteca/Fantasma Jr. double pin (ALWAYS HAS TO BE ONE!), Black Warrior, Averno over Sombra to win.

I think a rudo has to win this week b/c if a tecnico wins it has to be Sombra and it will guarantee Mistico isn’t winning next week since CMLL wouldn’t put him in a match vs Sombra or against any other tecnico for that matter. CMLL is much more happy doing rudo vs rudo matches constantly.

But remember… my specialty is limited to Tuesday Arena Mexico shows now so all I’m good for is telling you all Los Rayos Tapatios will win the opener on the 9th.

  4. I took Averno and it seems like the most likely outcome (54% right now in the poll and that is pretty impressive given an 8 person “tournament” of some sort). The only thing that made me consider La Sombra is the potential of building up another technico singles main eventer and the fact that tonight is weighted toward the rudos. Still, next week being a kids day makeup show makes it entirely too likely that Mistico will be winning that round, and while Mistico vs Sombra would be incredibly entertaining, I just don’t belive that is where we are heading.

Poor Dorada isn’t worth one vote in this block?

  5. You know, they did have next week marked as the second round of this tournament and Kid’s Day a week before they decided Mistico was in this tournament. He couldn’t have been the planned winner when they put those two together.

Now, plans can change (and they have, since Mistico’s in this and there’s at least one guy here who wasn’t supposed to be) and they probably had Mistico going over Pesta Negra in those plans. But they were at least willing to consider this as something beside a Mistico showcase at one point.

  6. Well as I noted above – don’t listen to me.

In fact – don’t listen to anyone except 3 people who voted.

  7. I certainly have no track record or being right recently (though I did sadly vote for Damian losing on Tuesday), so I have no ground to stand on for my Mistico winning next week claim. I would actually love to see Averno (assuming he wins tonight) vs Ultimo next week to continue that feud. But the Kids Day show will win out when I vote for a winner next week.

The only counter argument I have to the Cubs announced tournament and Kids Day before they announced Mistico as a participant is that CMLL hasn’t shown any tendency to plan that far in advance for much of anything. In fact, that argument only convinces me that either CMLL had no idea what they were going to do with this tournament or tonight’s winner will be winning the finals. Or quite possibly both.

I would love to be proven wrong and surprised next week, but we will see.

  8. You guys are gonna have to wait for that one.

The NWA Light Heavyweight Champion won this bracket of the tournament.

(That should get LuchaWiki about 44 hits tonight.)

  9. OK, I’ll admit I had to search the luchawiki (probably could have searched here too). Glad CMLL gave us a surprise. Ad I actually like the winner. Doesn’t seem like a good matchup for Mistico, so maybe we get a surprise next week too?
