03/17: notes

If you haven’t seen it, Marco Corleone was nice enough to leave a comment explaining his decision to move to AAA.

Ovaciones is still hilariously under the impression Marco is wrestling in Arena Mexico today. Even the ad for the show still has Marco’s name listed. (Note the tiny article about Wagner showing up at Rey de Reyes.) ESTO figured out it will be someone else, perhaps because the have another article talking about the jump.

The Ovaciones ads says this is yet another discounted ticket show, right before they’re jacking up prices for the mask match. I don’t understand this business plan at all.

Ovaciones main article is Villano V & Ultimo Guerrero talking about their mask match. Reads like all quotes from the press conference weeks ago.

Box Y Lucha looks back at Anibal, who passed away 25 years ago. Anibal Jr. and Solitario Jr. are holding a show honoring their fathers on the 22nd fearturing a tag team tournament.

Al Filo del Ring also has an interview with IWRG’s Zatura, who says he wrestled in Arena Neza and Arena Coliseo DF retiring due to injury for a time and Toxico (DF) about wrestling in hardcore and traditional shows.

Tijuana is launching a tourism campaign called “120 Things To Do in Tijuana. Watch lucha libre and buy a mask are 2 of them. Being shot oddly does not make the list.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update from Thursday, Saturday, and Monday, and Robert on IWRG 11/22/07, ACM 04/15/07 and 05/01/07, ACM 06/03, 06/05, 06/17/07, ACM 06/24, 07/03 and 08/05 and GdR 12/01 and FSE 12/02/07.

  1. “Tijuana is launching a tourism campaign called “120 Things To Do in Tijuana. Watch lucha libre and buy a mask are 2 of them. Being shot oddly does not make the list.”

Terrible…just terrible. And yet, I cackled uncontrollably anyway. We’re both going straight to hell, Cubs.

  2. We can do a live chat after all!

If you believe the Hi5 page…

“FUNCION DE HOMENAJE A 2 LEYENDAS SERÁ UNA FUNCIÓN SIN PAGO POR EVENTO… SU TRANSMISIÓN POR TV ABIERTA…NO SERÁ TRANSMITIDA EL SABADO 21 DE MARZO…SINO HASTA PREVIO AVISO…. ”

Also they put up a new poster and it looks like they took away the second match (maybe to make sure everything fits on PPV?).

  3. Wait a sec…

That actually says it’ll be a free show on SKY.

Sorry guys, I got confused for a second and thought CMLL was a company that wanted to make money.

  4. They also say Sagrado is replacing Marco tonight.

Something tells me with that main event they might wanna make it 75% off night.

  5. sad sad no PPV booo hoooo we gonna miss the chicken fly but anyway we will survive

  6. Wrestlers or Prostitutes, hmmmm what a foreign would want in a wrestling bussines hmmmmm my mind is goin to break with all these questions and nobody can answer them…

  7. @Rob: And this makes perfect sense for a company that thinks that airing shows delayed or live on pay tv drives down attendance… So it is airing on some Sky TV channel for free, but not on Televisa?

  8. It’ll air twice on Sky, some time after the show. Sky airs Galavision twice. Once Gala airs it, Sky will as well.

  9. CMLL might be better off not doing live PPV’s unless they’re carried by all systems, not just SKY. Airing on SKY alone is like WWE airing a PPV on satellite in the US, and withholding rights from cable operators. A move that would put Vince out of business.

Maybe this will be a prime time special at some point.

How come CMLL not doing a PPV is a sin, but AAA not putting Rey de Reyes on PPV is not?

  10. Who cares about CMLL being on PPV, the thing is they won’t air it for who knows how much time (if they air it at all) while Rey de Reyes will air in it’s usual Sunday slot. Even if the internet fans know what will happen in Rey de Reyes, they made up for a very low %, while by the time Dos Leyendas airs, everyone will know what went on.

  11. “while by the time Dos Leyendas airs, everyone will know what went on.”

That’s because 2Leyendas will generate major mainstream pub, and the loser will have his face all over the newspapers and Accion by Sunday.

  12. WON saying 5,000 in Guadalajara for Rey de Reyes. Could that be true? Monday was a holiday in Mexico, so you’d think attendance would be up since it was not a school/work night.

  13. *If* AAA only drew 5k for that show (which doesn’t seem likely), and CMLL drew 4500 the same night in the same town with maximo vs texanito on top, then we all need to shut the hell up.

  14. I’m 99.9% positive Zellner typo’d and forgot the ‘1’ in front of the ‘5,000’.

  15. @LLL: Nope, it will be because by the time DL airs, the Gala show will already have air several later shows where they would have the result of it. Even Superluchas only sells like 15K magazines, not a big dent in the lucha fandom and no one knows when accion airs anymore, it’s a second fiddle newsshow, En La Jugada is the main thing right now, and, of course, they aired Corleone running in during Rey de Reyes mere minutes after it happened.

  16. But im old enough to admire the old school too there were a few good ones mostly the independientes in the toreo

  17. CMLL is not having PPV cos they want to fill arena mexico on the event thats why makin people in mexico city to go and buy tickets and blah blah just bussines they need to fill it and the PPV doesnt give them the money what they got from sellin tickets thats all about bussines

  18. @LLL: Don’t worry, Dr. Lucha or Konnan would have corrected the attendance figure. KrisZ already sent the correction, so I’d assume Bryan or Dave will make a note of it in the next update.

  19. Marco Corleone’s comments about getting invites to do more stuff in Mexico outside of wrestling, what kind of stuff? Special guest appearances on variety shows, red carpet appearances at award shows, that kind of thing?

  20. @mysterious_w: Private dances for rich Mexican MILF’s. I’d imagine Corleone gets lots of women on the side. And judging from the crowd shots, he was part of a successful formula that was attracting beautiful young women to the CMLL shows.

Even though Corleone does a good stripper gimmick, I’d like to see him in WWE or TNA as a cocky heel. Maybe “Mr. Wonderful” Mark Jindrak, since he was trained by Orndorff.

  21. I’m pretty sure WCW did that angle in 2000 and it went nowhere.

I think Marco would just devalue himself by doing a gimmick where he is the “new version of (insert wrestler here)”. Make your own name, it’s the best way to succeed.

  22. All what he wanted was to be on tv be famous and not interested in wrestling so he gonna do it who knows lol is just crazy

  23. @Infermas: You’re okay with the fact when Rey Bucanero ran his show for “ladies only” – it included Volador Jr.? Why is it okay for Volador Jr. to work that show and still be your favorite wrestler but it’s a crime for Marco to work shows that appeal to the women in the audience?

You laugh at AAA for their silly storylines (“historylines” – tm Box y Lucha Forum) but if you want I can go put over a hundred clips on youtube of Atlantis playing with dolphins as Apolo Dantes watches and gets angry + Atlantis and Rayo De Jalisco Jr. fighting with the Dinamitas with Batman style sound effects going on in the background. That’s your idol?

I’m just trying to show you have a double standard. No matter what AAA does, you will hate it. No matter how much you like a wrestler, as soon as he goes to AAA you will hate him but then love him again when he leaves.

  24. Ok rob first of all i critic about corleone cos like he say on his post he´s gettin more famous on other stuff then wrestling and seems that he likes it, i have been a fan of lucha and the only two what has done the same as corleone is doin now was vampiro and konnan and maybe hijo del santo being more promoted on tv and magazines then lucha, not gettin into lucha a lot as long as his image is used as much as they can, he appear on shows like la oreja, and he´s weekly on magazinegossip, second of all i dont hate AAA i just critic their last few months cos what i dont understand mexican wrestling always has been workin well as the way it was, maybe aaa when antonio peña was the boss did work pretty well i can admit i like it in the beginin, but now all what they can do is just being a cheap copy of wwe? stealin scrips usin the same names for their teams? the D mex? cmon, antonio peña create the vipers, create the gringos locos when konnan, eddie guerrer and love machine were in their good times, and now all it seems liek to be a show what someone insult the audience and doin the same stupid things as someone like randy orton in wwe? and second of all if rey bucanero or volador jr did a ladies show good for them they need an extra money, and atlantis yes alsohe appear in one movie years ago with octagon but thats the culture of lucha since el santo, i dont know if u have seen these movies or not but i dont care at all, and yes i still on my point corleone, just want to be famous, want to be popular, he doesnt know anything about llaves, he just got to be famous to be tall toned and jumpin over the ring, now u tell me cos it seems like ur very smart about it whats corlone best feature in lucha? and aaa is not doin the same like wwe? and yes maybe cmll has done a few stuff but is not a circus so what if u dont like my comments take it easy is nothing against u, as like u do i can critic and say what i like and not like and take it easy and keep dreamin that u could book better matches on cmll or aaaa peace :-)
