A new day! A new era! Up is down, down is up, the high flyers are on top, the heavyweights are pushed all the way down to the (uh) semimain, Abismo Negro is teaming with Gato Eveready! I give this three weeks.

“Cruiserweight” doesn’t really mean much in lucha libre. There is a Mexican National Cruiserweight championship but it’s never really gotten traction – La Parka Jr. won it before he was La Parka Jr., which kinda proves the point. Cruiserweight is the WCW buzzword, and so that’s what’s being used here but middleweight would mean more. Eh, small battles not worth fighting.

What’s more amusing is the ever so rare 13 man match! Some people go for even numbers, some go for multiples of threes, but AAA blazes it’s own trail. Even better, it’s in a dome caged – so there isn’t a winner in the traditional sense (just the second to last loser) – I wonder if this is meant to be seeding or something?

Plus, they’ve stacked the deck in Block A. Not sure if I could come up with 13 for Block B, but I’ll try

1) Aerostar
2) Oriental
3) Gato Eveready
4) Ultimo Gladador
5) Histeria
6) Psicosis II
7) Espiritu
8) Rocky Romero – is he someplace else right now? Seems to be MIA.
9) Angel
10) Cuervo
11) Ozz
12) Tiger Cota
13) Tito Santana
(also: Rio Bravo, Argenis, Decnnis, Nemesis, Chris Stone, Dizzy, Jessy, Gallego, Ricky, Chiva?, maybe X-Pac if we’re supposed to think of him as a cruiserweight, guys like Yuriko, Nygma, Black Abyss, Angel Mortal may work too if you stretch)

Okay, that’s not so bad number wise. Name wise, it still doesn’t work and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s only one block.

The ? guy here would seem to be Shiima Xion. Based on the numbers, it’d make more sense for him to be a tecnico, but I don’t think they think like that.

Everything else is holding in place from Rey de Reyes: Charly/Electro, Mesias/Chessman, Zorro/X-Pac, Parka/Silver, Konnan/? (Vamp unless plans change again), Abismo/Abyss, Fabi/Cinthia.

Title match is as speculated earlier today (and last week), so this is mostly people just being switched around in the two top matches to accommodate it. One exception: Sombra instead of Mictlan.

9) Mesias vs Chessman [AAA HEAVYcage]

– As listed on the ticketmaster page, Kenzo Suzuki has taken Psycho Clown’s spot in the tournament

– no more mystery tag; Zorro teams with the HF2 against Charly and 2/3rds of D-Mex. This dovetails nicely with the Cibernetico rumor

– opening match trio confirmed, Tigre Cota in place of Oriental

Update 2: I failed at reading – main event is a cage match. Not that it’ll keep anyone out.

BTW – since we all knew CMLL was announcing their main event today, why announce Rey de Reyes? Really now.

Look at all those new people on top! I don’t know about you, but I’ve thought “??” has long been underutilized by this promotion and I’m just thrilled for him to get a shot at working fourth from the top.

I’m shocked and amazed and also pretty happy that everything I thought was going to happen in the tournament appears to be happening:

– Parka and Silver King are clearly winning their brackets.
– Black Abyss playing the role of Mr. Niebla and taking Abismo out of the tournament just like last year (but a round early) is in play, and Ozz is surely a pinball for Latin Lover.
– the two rudos who I thought might sneak thru are in the same group! You know, this sounds like a reversal of everything I’ve said for the last six or so months, but I would actually have Electroshock beat Super Fly. Unless you’re going to have Super Fly win the whole tournament (which I’d also be fine with), there’s no point of finally giving him the win only for him to lose later in the show.

Silver King, who I panned when he was announced firt, is clearly now the leading candidate to take this. I’m mocking the concept, because I won’t believe until I see it, but if they truly want to put new people on top (and also grease the skids for a certian person to show up here), Silver King’s the guy most set up for it.

Charly & Zorro’s tag is listed as “HELL RADICAL BROTHERS”. They might as well use blinking text to make it clear we’re to expect Cibernetico to return here. Zorro’s spot is surely the random foreign guest start of the evening.

Vampiro & Konnan might not be the worst match of the year – then again, it might! – but it’ll defintely be the one with the most shortcuts and gimmicks used to hide these two. (Even though Jack & Teddy aren’t booked, I wonder if they might get to show up just to take all the bumps here like in the Latin Lover match.) I guess we’re getting Vampiro out of retirement because the stip was “Roldan can pick anyone he wants to represent him”, so the Legion gave him their okay to use Vampiro for this match. For the rest of them, I dunno. As much as the skuttlebutt has hinted the end of the Legion around this show, I’m not as sure right now and wouldn’t be surprised to see a Chessman run-in to cause Vamp to lose and to set up those matches.

I hope the Mesias/Chessman matches they’ve been doing are really good, because I don’t have any desire to see that match at Rey de Reyes right now. Maybe they’ll change my mind.

Original Entry:

At Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso in Guadalajara. No lineup announced yet.

(this is just a post to keep track of the Rey de Reyes entrants. I’ll edit them in as they’re announced, and repost this when the lineup comes out.)

CMLL LATV #132 (02/14)

taped 02/06, 02/08

Minis match was fast paced and a lot of fun. Both Warrior and Dorada seem to fit better with the CMLL guys as they do at the start

Astro Boy/Caligula was 3 minutes long and immediately forgettable.

Dos/UG doesn’t do anything for me but I do enjoy seeing these rudos win.

03/09: Coliseo

As suspected, Hijo de Avernos got the win here and challenged for a title match next week at the Fan Appreciation show. Tecnicos accepted and it appears it’s on, though the Sunday lineup has not been changed yet on CMLL’s side.

Hooligan replaced Tiger Kid.

SuperLuchas notes a Perros del Mal show in Acapulco which includes Hijo del Santo in the main event. It also lists Psicosis and Histeria in the tercera. I haven’t seen a show result for those two in a while, since they’ve pretty much been off TV since December. If this is a sign they’ve left AAA, they’ll probably be forced to change gimmicks soon; we do know how much AAA loves keeping the Psicosis name around.

Cadena3 has been picked up by SKY satellite.

Periodico Express has a long story about the career of Mini Perro Aguyao. I’ve never heard of a Mini Perro Aguayo (who says he was trained by Principe Aguayo and worked for AAA, (during the early days )but got dropped because he could never get his wrestling license

Shocker is interviewed by Televisa Deportes, but of course all their video is blocked in the US. Can Canada see it? Not that I need to see what Shocker is saying (one can guess)

Box Y Lucha #2913 has Villano V/UG on the cover again, but no teasers. The new TV episode is up.

Canek’s mystery opponent for the 03/18 UWE show turns out to be Cibernetico. They changed the angle at the 02/28 show (and I didn’t pick it up on the recaps at the time), where the deal now is Canek and Cibernetico are squaring off for a shot at Wagner and the UWA Heavyweight title. Cibernetico might have not been originally available for this show, but plans change.

CMLL C3 (02/07)

taped 02/03/09

This was the Mexican Trios title match show. IIRC, I saw this not soon before Dragon Rojo’s trip to NJPW was announced, which immediately seemed like a bad idea. It’s funny, he’s seem fine in Poder Mexica matches before and after this show, but he was completely off and unready looking here. Everyone else was fine, and the tricky rudo plan to win the match was excellent.

I remember nothing else which happened on this show.
