02/13 Site Notes

Just a few things worth talking about briefly. (ha, not.)

* for the last week or so, I’ve been doing breaking news/quick takes on shows on my new twitter account, http://www.twitter.com/luchablog .If you’re on twitter and want a stream of lucha news, go ahead and follow me. (If you’re not on twitter, there’s an RSS feed at the link, and all the tweets get posted on the sidebar here.)

I’m still in the process of figuring out the best way to use it – what stuff goes here, what stuff goes there, when does it make sense to repeat stuff – but it’s a lot easier way for me to get out quick news that doesn’t really need it’s post, or to get the important stuff out quicker when it might still take me a while to assemble a full post on the subject.

I’m not the only person on twitter, so feel free to promote yourself on the comments. And I have a non-lucha twitter account too, logically enough at twitter.com/thecubsfan (which is not being updated a lot for reasons I need to explain at some point. Some other point.)

* Please don’t forget that the deadline for the Tapatia awards is Thursday at midnight. (Though, if you send it Friday morning, I probably won’t have counted them up by them.) Even with some regulars still not having voted, we’re already easily ahead of last year’s total and I’ve been impressed by the variety of votes.

* I’ve been working a lot on the events/roster db this week, adding new elements which may not be immediately visible on the outside but will help distinguish between wrestlers using the same name at different times (or same names at the same times in different locations), but I’m still working on implementing a lot of it.

I’ve been kind of stuck on what to do with some sections – like the roster pages and the individual wrestler cards – since those have been supplanted in a lot of ways by the luchawiki profile pages. I don’t want to spend a lot of time maintaining one set of things (rather be creating or at least organizing something new), and I even less want to be maintaining two.

With the db wrestler pages, the easy solution and the one I like best is to bring back the only feature of them I really enjoyed, but had to dump due to the immense server load it was taking to create them daily. (I’m being evasive here because I think I have a solution but haven’t tried to actually do it yet; I’ll be clearer when I get it to work.)

With the roster pages…they’ll always have the guys sorted into the two major promotions, and by rudo and tecnico since I’ve got that nicely showing up now. But if more current information about the titles, about the groups and with better pictures will always be on the wiki (because it’s not all on me), then I don’t know why I need to do a lesser version here. There’s still the pushes (or the frequency), but that stuff is very flexible and ever changing. And almost always out of date the next day. I don’t have any real ideas except just dropping it into a quick text list and moving on, so that’ll probably be happening soon.

If there are things you’d like to see done with the lucha db, or if there’s something you think is not working the way it ought to, I always want to know and now’s a good as any.

  1. I have a twitter too! twitter.com/robviper

Mine isn’t even close to as informative as the one Cubs has. I will mostly use it for random thoughts and to comment on stuff I watch while at work since I usually forget it by the time I am home.
