AAA’s Big Surprise is Rocky Romero

No fooling! I have 500 “so, he’s not in CMLL!” jokes to make here, but it’s confusing enough as it is. Rocky had been wrestling as Grey Shadow, and as apparently is no longer wrestling as Grey Shadow. Though, unless they make that clear to the AAA audience, it’s just going to look like a random foreigner from years past showing up in AAA and not a big jump – and even if they did, Grey Shadow’s been relegated to a minor role. He’s joining X-Pac’s D-Generation-Mex group.

(Sorry, Shocker!)

AAA picking up a ROH guy does fit their mood! I can not even begin to fathom the matches, though I think this is for sure a better move for Rocky’s spot. Guess he won’t be getting Sangre Azteca’s mask!

I’m crushed the Alex/Shadow team isn’t happening. They were so fun on FSE.

How does that NJPW G1 Tag Team work now, with Negro probably not too thirlled with Rocky? I can’t see an AAA and CMLL guy teaming up in Japan.

Does Rocky still have the CMLL Super Lightweight Belt? HMMMMM.

  1. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. So many jokes, so little time.

I believe irony will be defined quite nicely when Meltzer writes about Romero joining the “wrestling challenged” AAA promotion to “improve” the quality of matches. Bwahahahahaha.

Rocky Romero and X-Pac vs Halloween and Joe Lider – Make it happen! For Tim’s sake!

See, even when CMLL can’t help themselves AAA goes out and takes care of things by removing one of the shittest wrestler on their roster. Watch CMLL get angry and replace him with Electro Shock or Argenis.

  2. And in typical CMLL fashion Grey Shadow is booked for next Sunday even though he no-showed tonight and jumped to the opposition. He might still show!

  3. @thecubsfan: I think the greatest thing ever would be to come home from work tomorrow and see CMLL is booking Arena Neza again with the first main event being Dos Jr., Shocker and Grey Shadow vs Villano V, Diamante Negro and Halcon Negro.

  4. I think the AAA website has an actual photo of Romero in his Grey Shadow mask so perhaps he destroyed the gimmick when he showed up which must have made the crowd even more confused by seeing a masked guy they didn’t know unmask himself to reveal an unmasked guy they don’t know. *L*

  5. Romero is still set for Japan. New Japan didnt book him through CMLL. Negro might not go now though. that should be interesting to see how that plays out.

i’m surprised he isnt joining the Foreign Legion, especially with him being Cuban. he and Konnan could team together as the guys who at one point were actually able to wrestle a good match.

Shocker would have been so much better. this acquisition doesnt help AAA in any way. i dont know what they are paying Romero, but i bet its enough that it would make Zumbido come back. i dont understand this signing. and its not even like he has history with anyone in AAA either. he’s wrestled a few matches with Jack Evans, but they didnt have a feud or anything. they were random tag matches. at least when Vampiro was brought in there was a purpose. to feud with Mesias so Cibernetico could feud with someone else.

  6. LOL. You’re too much Rob. But that’s so Konnan-esque. Show up, bury your past with the other group, and go on.

I think this is a good acquisition for AAA.

  7. @Bruce: “he and Konnan could team together as the guys who at one point were actually able to wrestle a good match.”

    ~ZING!

    “i dont understand this signing.”

    AAA (heart) U.S. indy wrestlers.

  8. I agree that AAA is acquiring yet another indie. And it has to have something to do with Konnan. I like this one though. AAA is looking good though. Aerostar and Super Fly are talented. Vamp and Mesias are having fun brawls. The angles totally make sense. Hart and Evans seem like they’re making a name for themselves.

It’s looking better than CMLL and TNA as far as major feds.

  9. Damn didn’t see that coming. Rocky Romero? WOW!! Whose side will he be on? AAA? Legion? And somewhere the question of where does that leave Negro in New Japan has to be answered.

  10. Didn’t Romero wrestle in AAA with the rest of the Havana Pit Bulls (Pinoi Boy and Ricky Romero)?

  11. @k.D.b: that was in CMLL. I know they mentioned working with AAA way before they came into CMLL, but I can’t find any record of it.

  12. I have a feeling Cibernetico’s going to end up being the third member of Degeneration-Mex. Just seems like he’d want to be the Triple H of that group. It also would seem strange to have a group called that without a Mexican in it.

You know, the other winners in this might be the fans who hate Romero in the indies. I’m guessing Romero, like Hart and Evans, might make AAA his priority and that could cut into him working US indies.

  13. @LLL: “brawls in the crowd. would you rather see them in the ring?”

Best point you’ve made all year.

  14. So I thought about it all day (it was a boring day aside from the NHL preview special) and figured out the best thing for CMLL to do…

    Deny Rocky was Grey Shadow.

Just have someone new take over the role… say Stuka Jr.? Who else sorta has Romero’s skin color? Just find someone and put them under the mask and keep booking the gimmick as usual. Pretend like they have no idea what Romero is talking about when he says he used to work as Grey Shadow.

I think it’d be pretty funny.:)

  15. @ Rob:

the only thing is that they’d have to get someone that could also speak English as half of the promos that he cut as Grey Shadow were in English.

  16. Well predicting Panther losing wasn’t really making a point. It was more just taking a random guess and/or being the only one here who didn’t go temporarily braindead and thus forgot how dumb the CMLL bookers really are.:)

  17. Panther has not been a top 10 star in CMLL in many years. So him keeping his mask was not a given like Mistico in a stip match. That’s why, to this day, I don’t see the loss as shocking. Surprising, but not shocking.

  18. Better is subjective. But I would imagine that in terms of box office, Mistico, Perro Jr., Ultimo Guerrero, Atlantis, Dos Caras Jr., are five right there. I leave out part-time workers like Wagner, LA Park because they are just that-come and go as they please.

  19. Just look at thecubsfans.com results. Blue Panther has not main evented much in Arena Mexico on Friday’s in the last year. He only got main event status again for the current Villano feud. Blue Panther has been semi-main for years.

  20. So you saying a mask match between let’s say Dos Caras Jr. and Ultimo Guerrero would be a better box office hit than Panther/Ultimo would have been?

  21. For the record I’m jumping on the Keith bandwagon tomorrow and picking Goddess to unmask Sujei. I figure I can’t lose. If Goddess wins, I laugh at you all for thinking Sujei was gonna win. If Goddess loses, I laugh at Goddess.

  22. @Tim: No. UG would’ve been drawn better against Panther. But as a main eventer, Blue Panther has been kind of weak.

I just didn’t see Panther as so strong going into that match with Villano. It was the way they built Villano last year in the cage stip that Panther won(d. Lizmark Jr.), where Villano said they would never lose their masks, I kind of figured CMLL would stretch out the Villano thing a few years.

Tim. Are you an indie worker here in Florida?

  23. @Rob: LOL. If I pick Goddess, it would be because of the whispers on this board that Goddess is being pushed for……… If that is why she is getting a push, she has a good shot at keeping her mask.

  24. No I’m not a worker Keith.

Goddess has to win the match. Then afterwards she should just unmask Guerrero style.

  25. @LLL: “If I pick Goddess, it would be because of the whispers on this board that Goddess is being pushed for……… If that is why she is getting a push”

Whispers are whispers though. The only person who’d be able to confirm something like that would be Superman or rather Peter Por… Parker himself.

  26. @Rob: I look to you for insider information.

On the subject of favors but not on the subject of Goddess, I have heard of Luchadors doing favors for things such as bookings.

Apparently it’s not uncommon practice for people to give the office presents (money, bottles of tequila, etc) to receive televised bookings.
