09/16: X-Pac, VdE

This ESTO interview Panico is listed with today’s date, but I can only figure it was a actually done last Thursday because they’re still talking about X-Pac not being on the anniversary show because of work visa issues. Panico says X-Pac would still be a guest at the show, which I bet isn’t happening now. Panico explains the women and the minis didn’t make the card because there are so many rivalries; someone explain the rivalries in the first two matches. He also says Dr. Wagner & LA Park know the style that is expected of them and know not to repeat their last singles match, the one that turned into a street fight with Park hitting people with a wheelchair. Panico even hopes they will agree to a mask match. I hope Panico isn’t too disappointed Friday.

Over on Box Y Lucha, Cesar says CMLL knew X-Pac had reached a deal with AAA early this past week, wished him well, and kept it quiet to allow him to make a surprise return. Huh. That is a hard to believe sequence of events.

AAA is claiming 11,500 people for Verano de Escandalo. They also posted their recap of some of the matches: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 but there’s very little new info. Mesias apparently was free to escape three different times, only for the Sect to stop him each time. Interference and botched interference caused both pinfalls in the Minis title match. Nothing about the Porky match. There’s gotta be better pictures of the champs coming.

AAA also has an interview with the trivia contest winners.

Notimex preview of today’s Mexico show. ESTO has one too. A little extra attention because it’s September 16.

SoloLuchas talks to Blue Panther about his match. There’s also a Blue Panther bio on MT. Years 1991 to 1993 gets 6 paragraphs. Everything after, including Friday’s match, gets 2.

SoloLuchas begins it’s look at the anniversary show with a preview of the opener and a look back at Rayo vs Cien

MEDINA TV (TUE) 09/16 Arena Neza [Luchando Libre]
1) Fantastick, Principe Azteca, Turbo vs Boricua I, Boricua II, Boricua III
2) Enigmatica & Esther Moreno vs Flor Metalica & Rossy Moreno

This is a AyM Sports taping.

A story about Mexico week in Spain mentions Pirata Morgan and Octagon’s appearance and indy wrestling there (mostly US based, since that’s what is on their TV.)

LuchaWorld has KrisZ‘s news update.

SmackDown will air at 10 PM on TV Azteca starting 10/03.

Al Filo del Ring has photos and results from the 09/07 and 09/11 IWRG tapings.

  1. Panico is either the greatest worker in the history of the business or that really is his photo when I look up the word ‘dumbfuck’.

11,500? AAA claimed that? The building they ran holds much more than that.:/ Smarter thing would have been to keep quiet till Saturday and announce a number bigger than the Arena Mexico show. Like say… 5,000.

  2. Place holds 11,500… more with the seats at the bottom, but then again, some part of the bleachers probably wasn’t used because of the production at the entrance.

  3. Just watched CMLL’s main event from Saturday’s tv via lawagnermania. I was the 13th viewer on pt. 1 and 7th on pt.2.

Man, was the match short. The intros and attack on Panther were longer than the match.

Interesting when the fan rushed Villanos while they beatdown Panther. Panther could lose. I’d like to see him lose and have Villanos lose in a double mask match.

  4. God Keith, your not one of them “First to comment, first to view” Youtube nerds are you?

I also watched the match and like most CMLL main events, it was dull. I kinda wish this anniversary match was a Handicap match: Panther vs Villanos so Panther could beat them and send them back to the old folks home called IWRG.

  5. @Tim: No. I just happened to check lawagnermania.

Chui thinks it got so many views because it did not air on Televisa. He could be right. Still, people went out of their way to see it.

But I can’t believe just how short that main event was.

Off topic. I see the Catch 47 is now Brighthouse Sports Net. I hope they pick up FCW. I’m going to FCW on Thursday, TNA next Sunday, and if I can find out if they are still doing the indy Lucha shows in Sarasota-Bradenton, I’ll hit one of those too.

  6. I think Panther will lose the mask on Friday. I think Villanos lose to someone else, possibly in a double-mask match, which would be great. Atlantis/UG vs. Villanos would be huge.

  7. Would be a waste. Panther vs Ultimo would be a bigger deal, and they could still do the tag match as well.

  8. well Chui, you were right, WWE is letting both broadcasters in Mexico do the commentary in Spanish. They must be paying big money to WWE. I just don’t know why Televisa and Azteca would want to absorb the cost of paying people to do what WWE already pays Hugo for.

  9. I heard Meltzer is reporting these two news items:

The Konnan/TNA lawsuit is entering mediation rather than going to court.

AAA is talking with Marco Corleone and Alex Koslov to form a trio with Johnny Stamboli. As noted, Stamboli has said he would be willing to move full-time to Mexico to save the company the cost of flying him back-and-forth if they’d give him work.

Would Marco really leave CMLL considering the so called power he has there?

I heard Raw just did a 2.6 rating. I wonder how well they debut on Televisa will be? Keith think they will do very good numbers. I think WWE will probably do something close to what CMLL does or lower but nowhere near AAA numbers. I don’t think Mexican fans want too see CM Punk,Jericho,JBL,HBK and Orton dominating RAW everyweek.

  10. Well Rey Jr. was in the main event so that could help it some. But I agree, I doubt they will that much better than CMLL does.

And why the hell would Corleone leave CMLL? Isn’t he one of the main stars there and is mad over? Same with Kozlov.

  11. Well, it’s pathetic that Televisa and Azteca want their legit sportscasters on WWE programming. I wonder if Mexicans understand that wrestling is a work, and it really doesn’t benefit them to lend their sportscasters credibility to something like wrestling?

If Mexicans will pay $200 for ringside four times a year at Palacio and Monterrey, I would think WWE has enough of a following down there to do as well as AAA. If WWE beats them, they’ll tell everyone about it. I think WWE will do ok.

  12. I seriously doubt the Mexicans care who the announcers are if the product is crappy.

And Keith you know they would do a ramp if Corleone came in. It would probably help the mini’s too.

  13. “If Mexicans will pay $200 for ringside four times a year at Palacio and Monterrey, I would think WWE has enough of a following down there to do as well as AAA.”

You say Mexicans are willing to pay $200 4 times a year for WWE and earlier said WWE will run more than 25 shows a year in Mexico soon. So do you think fans will pay $200 more than 25 times a year to watch the WWE’s repetitive product?

Let me answer that for you… NO.

Now here’s your next question which I’ll actually allow you to answer:

When the fans in Mexico stop paying $200 for WWE shows and only go if the prices are around $50-$60 at most, will Vince give a crap about running regularly in Mexico?

    I lied.

    The answer is NO.

Once again I must say you seem to be very happy and hopeful that the WWE takes Mexico by storm and conquers both AAA and CMLL. Are you sure you’re still a Lucha fan? I’m gonna keep asking that.

  14. “They must be paying big money to WWE.”

Nope, they’re getting paid to be airing the infomercials, not the other way around. Smackdown is already set for the 22:00 hour, so Azteca will need to push them just 90 minutes back so they go with the rest of the infomercial crap.

  15. @Rob: Yes. I think WWE will expand their presence now that they have network exposure. They will run towns like SLP, Torreon, Leon, Puebla, and Acapulco, in addition to the big three cities. But I said “B” shows, which means skimming a few top names and a match off the show. That means a cheaper ticket for the smaller markets.

The reason tickets are so high is because the taxes are high, and the promoter protects themselves in case the peso lowers. Most OCESA contracts pay the talent based on the value of the peso at contract signing. And the boys pay income taxes for their earnings in Mexico.

Would WWE go for $60 tickets? Maybe to Monterrey. Venue is big, and they can route it with Laredo and McAllen if they have to. I don’t see them ever not doing Monterrey.

  16. You’ve got all the business answers. Why have you never promoted?

You make it sound so easy. Can’t wait to see the laundry list of excuses when the WWE runs away from Mexico as fast as possible…

“Vince was afraid to bring his stars to Mexico because of the kidnappings.”

  17. @luchalibrelive!: If they don’t want to run ECW house shows, they’re surely not going to tour by taking a couple top names off the tour. Because it’s basically the same thing.

  18. @thecubsfan: WWE has run “B” shows, and still runs smaller venues like Westchester County Center that won’t get the same lineup as Madison Square Garden.

  19. No, I don’t want to see WWE beat up AAA and CMLL. No need. They both do enough damage to themselves without the help. But it will be very interesting to see how they do in the ratings.
