09/05: notes

Before we move on, let me hit a few last thoughts about Paco Alonso and the WON HOF
– I’ve been so busy, I was going to do a (mostly) gag protesting his inclusion by turning off the website for a day, but I was too busy to set up doing nothing. Think about THAT.
– I think the Alonso HOF bio did a better job of making my case than I could ever do – it wasn’t a slam, it was just a fine job of detailed what he’s done and not done. BTW, you really need a get a copy of this week’s newsletter to read the Martin Karadagian (Titanes en el Ring) bio. I’ve been barely read it and I already know it’s great.
– Alonso scored highest from current wrestlers (I wasn’t kidding about ‘paying people what they should get’ being a big help – this says something about the average promoter) and historians. Which leads me to the last point
– in reality, this is the the CMLL Office being put in the HOF en mass. Alonso is the figurehead (and since we feel he’s actually a figurehead, we argue it), but Alonso is in for the CMLL Office’s longevity and the multi-year hot run of 10K weekly attendance prior to this, which is surely something historians voted for. “Paco Alonso” is just the pseudonym for all of the wrestlers, bookers, local promoters, trainers and everyone else and it should be viewed as such no matter who’s name is in the big list. I just hope those who voted for Paco Alonso don’t forget the team effort when other members of those team (I’m particularly thinking Mistico, but Doc Wagner Jr. is getting on the ballot next year) and vote similarly.

On to the new-ish…

Joaquin Roldan is credited as saying AAA’s Guerra de Titanes ’07 DVD is the first of it’s kind. I hope he means first AAA DVD and not, say, wrestling DVD but that’s not what it’s implying. (Wasn’t TripleMania on DVD too?) This is last year’s GdT, cut down from 4:30ish to 2:00. I’d like to remind you that Alfredo will still take your money and actually give you the full show. So you know. They’re talking like they’re going to speed up these DVDs, skipping ahead to this TripleMania and putting it out in October.

The bigger news is AAA had a press conference, this week, and apparently had no lineup for Verano de Escandalo besides Chessman/Cibernetico and Mesias/Vampiro. Mesias did vow to retire Vampiro.

The Notimex story about the CMLL anniversary card focuses more on those who won’t be there (Mistico, Perro Jr.) then those who will. Inevitable but surely disappointing. Also disappointing: CMLL never putting up Sunday result this week. BTW, Arena Mexico is hosting a boxing show on September 27; I don’t know the order of how these things are/were decided, but perhaps that’s a factor in why the Anniversary show is on the 19th? It could very well be possible it happened the other way.

Arturo Rivera’s column grants the Demon/Santo highlighted NWA Mexico show might have been hurt by what else was going on, but also notes Santo & Demon haven’t been drawing elsewhere, down to 800 elsewhere. Like was said the first day the NWA Mexico group was announced, it was going to be tough to make it work without CMLL or AAA co-promotion (though I didn’t anticapte Santo falling this far as a draw.)

Assorted links
Pierroth still says he’s retiring in October, but doesn’t have a date OR someone he’s happy with taking his name
Scorpio Jr.’s doctor updates his status. In this one, it sounds like him returning in two months is one of many possiblities and it’s too soon to tell
– After years of rumors in that direction, and a statement that it would be, El Toreo is actually being taken apart, piece by piece for now.
Head Hunter talks more about leaving AAA. He apparently showed up in IWRG last night…
– and Sololuchas posts about the main event featuring Intocable, with Head Hunter running in.
– AAA in Sinola
– CMLL in Tampico
– indy wrestling in Auditorio Benito Juarez.

A Spain newspaper makes various Santo films it’s Horror/Fantasy films of the week. Another paper writes the usual article about luchadors as agents of change.

  1. hijacking my own thread: what’s the deal with PWG and Jack Evans? I presumed he had to pull out because AAA booked him some place else against Jack’s wishes and he had no choice but to do it, thus unintentionally screwing PWG in the process, but the bits and pieces I’ve heard suggest there’s more malice than that.

  2. Those DVDs are probably a good deal for AAA, since what they sell or not is nearly of no importance, as Televisa will distribute them just like they have done with Chavo and RBD, giving them away for subscriptions, gifts and whatever.

  3. @thecubsfan: It would help if you explained the Evans deal or pointed to where the info is… =)

But considering Evans gave a notice to ROH, maybe he supposed the other guys would get a grip from that?

  4. OK I guess I got something from socaluncensored.com, it makes sense for Jack to stay in AAA and work 3 or 4 shows getting more money than go all the way to PWG, but I guess it is hard to tell the truth even if they’re buddies, and maybe even harder with them being buddies… right now the dollar is doing so bad and peso is so “high” that “gringos” are a bargain to book over here, even more considering that Jack and anyone else for that matter can get by working 20% of his capacity and still be blowing the fans away.

  6. I read that too but where’s the source? Oct/Pirata are supposed to be in Spain on the 14th.

    No Aero Star.

    Pointless 4 way match.

La Diabolica inserted into the feud out of nowhere and during the blowoff match.

    I’d rather just assume it’s a fake.

  7. I’m sure the card will look a lot like this but it’s best to just wait for official confirmation.

  8. Official confirmation should come Sunday b/c if they don’t announce a card on the last TV show before the event you know they’re having a huge problems…

  9. The guy already scanned and posted the flyer up, so the card should have been there for like 2 weeks already, they get someone instead of Morgan, and maybe another change, but that’s to be expected, CMLL changed the main event to the Dec 2007 big show the day before it took place…

  10. I was listening to the show, seems no chagnes were made to the anniv card although guys cut out just as the main event ends. I think Rudos took the 2), 3) and 4) went DQ for the tecs and tecnicos won the main event as well.

  11. Messias will retire Vampiro eh? Maybe after he does that he can retire himself and then we’ll be rid of two useless losers.

This year’s Triplemania was a waste of money on PPV, and a waste of time to watch on free tv, why the fuck would people waste money buying the DVD?

Verano de Escandalo is next week and there’s still no lineup. Man, even Vince Russo wouldn’t do something this stupid. They’re either really unorganized or they’re under the dilusion that people are so thrilled over Vampiro vs Messias AGAIN that they don’t care who else is on the card.

  12. There’s a supposed second show for NWA (or third if one counts Leon) again in Juan de la Barrera, weird that it includes Shocker and Toscano, although Santito is not in this one, been looking for somewhere to confirm it…

  13. Meltzer said in the WON they have a late September date booked but that was before he knew anything about the disaster last week.

I called two shows and then a third would be announced and never happen so we’ll see…

  14. Needless to say, no vamp at the dragon gate show.

I think his replacement was kendo (or something similar sounding). I only have the blackberry for the net, so i cant do a big search.

  15. It may mean nothing, but I don’t see IWRG on the TVC Deportes grid this weekend. Just CMLL. The grid came out while I was at tonight’s TNA show.

Has there been any kind of announcement? If CMLL replaces IWRG, we should get it in the states on TU VISION.

  16. @Rob: Black Terry Jr posted pictures of an earlier NWA show, so this one would be the third one, announced, let’s see if it takes place.

  17. If the deal with TVC is gone for IWRG, then some (or all) of the guys jumping in might think it better…
