more notes about the Lucha Libre USA/AAA shows

MexicanWrestling.org lists a lineup for the AAA shows. I think it’s the same for both shows, but it’s not specific about that. Or all the wrestlers.

1) Mascarita Divina, Octagoncito vs Mini Charly Manson, Mini Abismo
2) Fabi Apache, Pimpinela vs Mari Apache, ?
3) Super Fly, ?, ?? vs Scorpio Jr., Decnnis, Psicosis
4) Super Porky, Octagon, ? vs Mesais, Ozz, Cuervo
5) Konnan, Zorro, Kenzo Suzuki vs Cibernetico, Chessman, La Parka Jr.

Opener actually just lists “Mascarita”, so I guess it could be Sagrada. Note Scorpio’s inclusion. He’s not going to work these shows, but that also means this card was figured out well in advance of the departures. Those TBDs aren’t because people left and spots need to be filled, it’s because the US promoters never got a full card to start (though Charly was probably that semimian mystery spot.) I would suspect the guys from the Warped Tour end up filling many of the empty spots. It’s not a special card but it’s pretty representative of current AAA.

There’s also an advertisement for an 08/01 PPV, featuring “Legendary battles of TripleMania”. Which translates to “matches from the last few years, with no particular care.”

LA PARKA -VS- CIBERNETICO

2004 TripleMania. Mask vs Mask, which goes unmentioned. Perhaps because of all the unmasked photos of Cibernetico.

DOME OF DEATH
The Mexican luchadores
Cibernético, Apocalipsis, Chessman, and Chary Manson
-VS-
The Foreign Legion
Kenzo Suzuky, X-Pac and El Mesías

TripleMania 2007. Apocalispis is the valet that appeared like twice, and that wasn’t even her name. They list as one of the greatest matches in the history of lucha libre. It must be fun to write ad copy.

BROTHER VS BROTHER
Charly Manson
-VS-
Electroshock

TripleMania 2004. This should be the match with the retirement stip, but Lady Apache and Electroshock shaved their heads instead.

FATHER -VS- SON
Juventude Guerrera, Sangre Chicana
-VS-
Fuerza Guerrera, Octagon

Spell check! I’m guessing this is the Juvi/Fuerza match from TripleMania 2007, except it was a singles match and they’ve got the seconds reversed. Like the previous match, it’s not a storyline that’s actually being followed up right now.

RUDOS -VS- TECHNICOS

MINI LUCHADORES
The Rudos
Mini-Chessman, Mini-Abismo Negro, Mini- Jerrito Estrada
-VS-
The Técnicos
Octagoncito, Mascarita Sagrada, La Parkita

This is from TripleMania 2006.

Skipping TripleMania on TV, to catch up live and to get people to pay for it would’ve worked for TV, or a better selection of great matches might have made this worthwhile. This is far from a Best Of – there’s one Important match here and maybe one Very Good match here. I’m all for supporting the product, but if you’ve really want to pay to watch AAA on your TV, you’d be better buying a DVD from Fredo or Bob or someone. I wouldn’t be surprised if buying the DVDs for the three full TripleManias ends up cheaper than this PPV.

Edit: On his podcast, Dave Meltzer says these two shows are supposed to be part of a larger tour, but he’s been expecting to hear the rest of the tour forever and still doesn’t know.

  1. I don’t know what language it’s going to be in. Maybe both English and Spanish at different times. Sounds like this is a PPV that debuts 8/1 and repeats itself. WON did say they were doing the voiceover work in NYC, but that could be because they have to take out the Televisa commentary, not necessarily b/c this will be in English.

  2. Yeah. It looks like someone is just doing a PPV for the fun of doing a PPV. Let’s all keep track of how many ads we see for the show. Time Warner is pretty good about running PPV ads for WWE and TNA, and with little paid advertising on AAA(it’s mostly per-inquiry ads), there’s no excuse for cable companies not to get behind this PPV.

  3. AAA is looking at Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, DC, Chicago, NYC, Houston, Phoenix, etc…….

If LA and San Jose draw, the tour continues. If they bomb, we’ll be waiting another few years before they return.

I’ll bet CMLL gets a tour now. They always have just after AAA gets dates in the US. Like when CMLL ran Olympic Aud, Immokolee, Bronco Bowl, and Houston just after AAA dates.

  4. nothing is listed for Raleigh yet, as i live in Durham and i hear about every show that occurs in the Triangle.

on a seperate note, with Histeria possibly gone, and the lineup for the AAA show being well in advance, is Psicosis II joining Guapos? he has no faction and he’s a guy who is always in a faction. with no vipers, is that the next stable he jumps into? should be interesting.

  5. AAA is talking to promoters all over. They sold dates in California, and if they do ok, they’ll continue onto other towns. Dorton Arena in Raleigh is being looked at. Gary Juster ran there years ago.

Keep in mind, if these shows in California bomb, word travels among promoters, and then everything could fall apart.

The guy doing LA and San Jose is a great promoter, so I think things will be ok

  6. @ luchalibrelive:

Dorton Arena? really? i would have thought they’d go somewhere smaller. Dorton holds about 8000 people. i dont think AAA can draw that many people anywhere in the US, but especially not in North Carolina. they should do it at Vintage21, it would probaly be cheaper to run it there too.

  7. AAA needs to run that kind of places and with those price or else it wouldn’t make sense to go to the US at all since they’re running more shows and at similar prices over here.

  8. @Bruce: RBC holds like 13,000 or more, so AAA is in the right place if they do run Dorton in Raleigh.

  9. @ luchalibrelive:

RBC holds 26,000 for wrestling. Dorton holds about 8000 and Vintage21 holds about 2500. only WWE can sellout the RBC Center. and the last time a wrestling event sold out Dorton was that NWA show back in the mid 80s. UWF came there last year and couldnt even fill half of it. fans in this area unfortunately dont follow lucha and havent heard of the majority of the wrestlers on the card. there is no way that AAA will get 8000 people to a show in Raleigh, especially in the summer. Dorton’s basically at NC State, so during the school year they can probaly sell a bunch more seats to bored college students, but even then i dont think they could do 8000. v21 is the only place they’ll sell out, maybe. i’m definitely gonna go if it happens and i hope it does, but it’s not going to draw in this area.

cubs, what does GALLI usually get in attendance for their shows? AAA in Raleigh will probaly do similiar, but the population down here is alot less than Illinois, but i’m curious as to what that promotion gets.

  10. @Bruce:

Did UWF run Dorton as UWF or TNA? I thought Sadler was doing TNA.

I know WWE ran RBC in late December or January and did just 4,000. I remember listening to the radio ads in Spanish on the Raleigh Regional Mexican FM while driving on I-95.

AAA at Dorton should do ok. Maybe a few thousand. Raleigh is one of those cities in NC that is changing fast. I don’t know what venue Vintage21 is.

If AAA does come to Raleigh, they should advertise in English too.

  11. @ luchalibrelive:

Sadler ran it as Hermie Sadler’s UWF. TNA hasnt come to this area yet, that i’m aware of. there was a ton of TNA guys at the show though.

  12. I may go to TNA in Fayetteville and South Carolina too. I’m going to schedule a drive from NY to Tampa so I can make at least one of those shows. Do you consider Fayetteville “this area”?

I’d like to know the date and results of the Sadler show at Dorton.

I find it funny that TNA is scheduling all these big venue dates. Shows in Texas, Florida, and other areas in 10,000 venues is just nuts. TNA is good for 1,500 on average, unless they’re in a really big market like NYC, where they did 3,000.

  13. @ thecubsfan: thanks.

@ luchalibrelive: Fayetteville isnt in the Triangle, it’s about a hour away from Wake Forest. i live in Durham so Fayetteville is a good 2 hours away from me and i dont go out there too often. i didnt go to the UWF show, my brother did, i’m waiting for him to call me back and he can tell me exactly when it was and who wrestled.
