03/21 Arena Mexico (Dos Leyends) open thread/results

CMLL (FRI) 03/21 Arena Mexico [superluchas, el martinete]
1) Dark Angel, Marcela, Sahori b Hiroka, Mima Shimoda, Princesa Sujei
Sahori beat Sujei in the third fall.
2) Bam Bam, Mascarita Dorada, Tzuki b Pequeño Damian 666, Fire, Pierrothito
Mascarita pins Damian
3) Olímpico, Rey Bucanero, Sangre Azteca b Grey Shadow, La Sombra, Sagrado
4) Mr. Águila, Terrible, Villano V DQ Blue Panther, Negro Casas, Volador Jr.
Blue Panther lost the first fall by ref stop during a beatdown, then yanked Villano’s mask for the second fall DQ.
5) Atlantis, Místico, Último Guerrero b Averno, LA Park, Mephisto [relevos incredible]
Both teams fall apart – Park abandons his partners prior to the loss, Atlantis and UG beat up Mistico and strip his mask after the match
6) el Hijo del Perro Aguayo b Héctor Garza [hair]
Hector suffers ‘injury’ in first fall (~2 min) loss, comes back to win second fall in under two minutes via usual moonsault. Perros all get involved as a distraction in the third fall, Humberto Garza Sr. counters them, but the referees watch that and not Perro fouling Hector.

Original Post: I don’t think there’s working live audio, but I’m guessing someone will get the PPV and post it live. Maybe on El Martiente? Perhaps on superluchas? I don’t know, I wrote this post on Thursday.

I should have results up by 1AM, if I can’t get on wirelessly earlier.

Edit: I can’t get in wirelessly, but while I’m sitting by a console and being underwhelmed, there’s the opener.

  1. I think we just got the main event finish. They announced Humberto Garza came to see his son take on Perrito. Insert Perrito attacking Humberto, his son checking on him and Perrito using a low blow for the win.

  2. Mascarita with the satellite small package to win the match for the tecnicos in 1 second less than the women got! RIOT HENRIK, RIOT!!!:p

Since both these matches got three falls, I expect many two fall matches on the way.

  3. Official times and finishes via SuperLuchas:

  4. Rey Bucanero (c), Olímpico y Sangre Azteca vencieron a Sagrado Sombra y Gray Shadow (c) en 9′53”

  5. Three falls in 9:34 with no editing! Even the 9:34 matches on FSE get edited somewhat.

Looks like Sagrado did a cool dive.

  6. Rudos take the especial in two falls via DQ. Oh my god… smart booking? The crappiest looking match on the card not counting the main event gets all of 2 falls and barely 9 minutes!

In theory this leaves more than 1 hour and 20 minutes for the top two matches but with entrances and ceremonies and stuff between matches, my guess is even the semi-main will be given 12 minutes or so.

  7. And the award for coolest new costume of the night goes to Volador Jr.! Although we’ve yet to see Tzuki.

  8. I wish CMLL would pay the motormen to do an extra trip on the Metro to accomodate Lucha fans. The Mets and Yankees do it in NY.

el martinete has a different DOB for Bestia. They have him as being only 40.

  9. Chui called the injury angle and they already used it in the first fall but let’s see how this one ends…

  10. “I say, Perro takes the first fall after a couple of minutes with a Lanza, they sell Garza being injured, probably with several “doctor is stopping the match” teases but they go into the third fall…”

“Backdrop seguido de lanza de Perro a Garza en 2′04” Garza tiene que ser atendido por el médico de la comisión quién le palica con un spray xilocaina porque quedó lastimado”

    I’m soooo suing them!!!

  11. ByL fans rioting b/c Perrito won with a distraction and low blow. How stupid were they not to expect that?

  12. The guy posting the screens has never posted a video so I doubt he’ll be the one uploading it.

Mistico’s team won the first fall with dual Atlantidas and second fall via La Mistica on Averno but then Atlantis/Guerrero destroyed Mistico/Parka and Mistico got stretchered.

  13. SuperLuchas reporter says even the crowd that cheered Perrito turned on him after the low blow finish.

  14. Hmmm…so what’s your take Rob? The booing/rioting that ensued follwing Perro’s win; was it because the crowd really has taken to Garza that quickly? Or are they just sick and tired of watching matches end with fouls and other assorted wackiness?

  15. Like “If Cena wins, we riot?” (LOL)

I’ll ask it a different way; do you think the crowd simply reacted to heel beating face, or are they tired of the big matches (and plenty of little ones) ending with fouls?

  16. They’re tired of matches ending with fouls. 2 Years ago, after the failed Atlantis vs Aguayo feud, there was a wave of anti-perroism, he was getting booed simply for tagging in, mostly because his lack of resources and the foul ending, just like that time, I guess fans will forget soon about this.

  17. I said “ByL fans are rioting” which meant the Box y Lucha (forum members) are rioting (yelling/screaming online). I gotta be more specific next time I guess.:)

I think the crowd has reached their limit when it comes to finishes like this but all it takes is a June main event with a clean finish and CMLL can start right back at it again come September with dirty finishes all around for another two years. I know I can guarantee you that next week’s Arena Mexico main event is ending clean.:) Unfortunately it’ll likely be a meaningless trios match…

The problem with doing clean endings is of course you need proper build to a good finish. It’s hard to build to a good clean finish when you are only given 7/8 minutes to work with in the final fall and have to use HALF that time to sell exhaustion. That’s why the low blows are such easy finishes. You can use it at any moment and the match can end logically.

In my opinion though – low blows have ALWAYS been the tool of lazy bookers. The CMLL booking staff is pathetic… everyone knows this. They are ex-wrestlers, not bookers. They are not qualified to be booking… it’s as simple as that. Pena was an ex-wrestler who had a mind for booking. He had a vision, he had ideas he wanted to implement, he had gimmick he wanted to create and he knew how to book a feud to its’ maximum potential. Panico? Franco Colombo? All they know is that at some point in early 2005 attendance started to rise… not due to anything they did. They happened to be in power during a time when Lucha became popular again and it really isn’t hard to book when something is popular b/c people are going to come no matter what you do. The full houses had 100% absolutely nothing to do with them. They kept putting stuff together the same way as back in 2003/2004 when attendance wasn’t so hot. Nothing changed in the promotion when it comes to booking style and cheap finishes. I think now would be a perfect time to say “thanks for your services, goodbye” and start a new chapter in CMLL with new bookers with actual ideas that can improve the actual wrestling product. But that won’t happen b/c CMLL doesn’t “change” and those two guys happen to be “trusted” by Paco (who knows no better).

The reaction after the match, if it was as described, just seals the fact that Mistico vs Perrito will be the September main event and Perrito will lose his hair after getting low blowed. Thus “justice will be served” or whatnot.

Of course this is assuming Perrito will actually do the J-O-B for Mistico. Last time a feud was built for a while and Perrito was told he was going to lose his hair – he balked.

  18. Clearly, I missed the “ByL” reference…I don’t know why; I’m at work, but it’s not like I’m actually working :-)

I am far from a lucha authority, but I know I am tired of the foul finishes and I rarely get to see much more than GdR. If they’re wearing that finish out on the “B” broadcasts, I can imagine how frustrating it must be to watch all their programming on a regular basis.

  19. Low blow finishes are all fine and good and a great way to advance feuds with cheap wins. They are MEANT for the ‘B’ shows since you don’t want to give away a clean finish to a big feud on a ‘B’ show. But when you are a promotion that only runs 3 or 4 big shows per year, the idea should be that those big shows have clean finishes and feuds settled. Nothing got settled tonight. Garza got cheated and Perrito didn’t win fair. Let’s wait till Garza grows his hair back and start it all over again. It’s a ripoff to anyone that paid for it.

Is it too much to ask Panico and Colombo to come up with a clean finish to ONE MATCH in March, June, September and December?

    I guess so.
