02/29: more from the press confrence, Mexico, Neza

More press conference details
ESTO says CMLL actually announced only a normal one on one match between Garza and Perro, but Garza insisted on making a hair match and Perro had no chance but to accept.
– Axel (mispelling or trademarked?) said he’d be off for two weeks after his first appearance, due to a previously scheduled tour of South America. His second show will be on 04/25 and he plans to be a regular. Axel says his grandfather (Santo) and father-in-law (Huracan Ramirez) would be very happy for him, and “justice is being done.” Reforma takes a pro-Hijo del Santo viewpoint, asking Axxel if he’s only here because of the CMLL/Hijo del Santo problems and questioning Axel’s skills. Guess we’ll find out.
– All the articles are under the impression there’s a Mistico/Wagner match on the undercard, but that’d be too much for one show.

As for tonight

CMLL (FRI) 02/29 Arena Mexico
1) Calígula & Méssala vs Molotov & Starman
2) Fabián el Gitano, Flash, Super Nova vs Arkangel de la Muerte, Loco Max, Nitro
3) Felino, Máximo, Valiente vs Ephesto, Euforia, Nosferatu
4) Grey Shadow, La Sombra, Negro Casas vs Atlantis, Sangre Azteca, Último Guerrero
5) Héctor Garza, Marco Corelone, Mistico vs Averno, el Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Mephisto

Garza says he’s spoken to Marco and knows he can trust him, but isn’t sure if he and Mistico can work together. Mistico says he’s got better things to do than turn on Garza (like teaming with his high flying friends; Super Nova not included in this list.)

I hope Ephesto didn’t join the Nuevo Infernales.

IWRG (THU) 02/21 Arena Naucalpan [the gladiatores]
1) Guerrero Inca b Bacteria
2) Angel de Oro & Chico Che b Nemesis IWRG & Radioactivo
3) Multifacético b Black Terry
4) Cerebro Negro, Dr. Matanza, Ogun, Veneno b Centauro, Fantasma de la Ópera, Freelance, Negro Navarro
5) Kaminari, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr., Septiembre Negro II DQ Groon XXX, Pantera, Ultraman Jr.

Hijo de Cien Caras and Cien Caras Jr. ran out to help their cousin, only Cien Caras Jr. was actually Mascara Ano 2000.

CMLL (SUN) 02/24 Arena Neza [the gladiatores]
1) Black Danger & Black Heart b Super Chiva & Turako
2) Black Bird I & Black Bird II b Poder Boricua & Tony Cirio
3) Chac-Mol b Chamaco Davila
4) Calígula, Méssala, Ramstein b Rayo Tapatío I, Rayo Tapatío II, Starman
5) Marcela b Hiroka [MEX WOMEN]
6) Místico & Último Guerrero b Dr. Wagner Jr. & Olímpico [pi]

Ramstein fouled a Tapatio for the win. Clean finish in the women’s match. Ultimo yanked Wagner’s mask while Mistico got la Mistica on Olimpico for the main event win.

More later.

  1. Looking at it from a business viewpoint – they floated the idea of a Mistico/Wagner match but didn’t specify singles or not. This is so when tickets go on sale, they can see how things are going and then:

Scenario A: Tickets selling fine – Mistico/Wagner put in a trios match.

Scenario B: Tickets not selling well – Mistico/Wagner added as the dual headliner and there’s your sellout.

I also don’t think Garza/Perrito is ending up a singles match.

  2. I agree Rob – it seems way too soon to do Garza vs Perrito for hair… they havent even had a 1-on-1 yet.

If we end up getting Garza/Mistico vs Perrito/Wagner for stips… that will be a huge match, but pointless for Garza or (especially) Perrito to lose their hair in that way.

  3. I was thinking more along the lines of Terrible or Aguila getting tossed into the mix. Sorta like the Sept. ’06 Perrito/Universo match which got switched to a triangle with Garza which made no sense since it just became a handicap hair match. I could see that happening here with the explanation Garza wants to shave any Perro Del Mal he can. Then they can put the hair match off for a bit. Heck, they could even toss in Universo as well and have some sort of Relevos Suicidas match with Perrito shaving Universo once again.

Sadly Rob, I think we’re gonna get Wagner vs. Mistico for masks in September.
    “””

ROTFL — Same thing was said a few months back and now it is even less likely to happen.

  5. I’d have to say, it’s a long shot that Wagner will lose his mask anytime soon. Based on what I see, he’s now the most popular wrestler in Arena Mexico. It seems like an army of Wagnermaniacs come out whenever he’s there. Wagner masks, shirts, and signs seem to undernumber Mistico, or anyone on the roster.

Mistico seems to have lost a lot of steam. One year ago, it seemed like everyone wore a Mistico mask. It was embarrassing for AAA when they panned the audience at TV, and there were more kids wearing Mistico masks then anyone on the AAA roster. This is no longer the case.

Wagner is so powerful, he can work shows with Santo. Just check the FMLL website, and you’ll see he’s working Pico Rivera with Santo.

  6. Well, if they blow Garza vs Perrito, or Garza/Perrito/Mistico/Wagner in March, what is a realistic “big match” they have for September?

I don’t see enough of a build to do UG/Wagner, or even Atlantis flipping and doing Atlantis/UG. Atlantis/Wagner would be a huge match, but anti-climactic at this point, considering how much they built it up in ’05 and then didnt do it.

I agree that Wagner is the man right now, but unless they just do a goofy multi man match liek last year, I dont see a big match in September other than Wagner/Mistico, or perhaps Averno/Mistico.

  7. I’m not sure CMLL would be willing to give up the Averno gimmick, so I don’t think it’s happening, they might be fool enough to do Mistico vs Axxel, well, no, I must give them credit and think it’s not happening.

  8. They’re making a big deal out of it being the ’75th Anniversary’ so it has to be one of the bigger stip matches in a while. Maybe they’ll finally give Mistico the win over Perrito in a hair match. It’d make sense and there is no bigger match. Plus the only thing the fans would accept instead of a mask loss is Perrito losing his hair.

  9. Isn’t Averno’s gimmick “make everyone else look awesome”? I think he can still do that without a mask, and it gives them a new upper rudo to lose his hair every other year.

  10. CMLL is turning more and more into a AAA/IWRG kind of company so I think they’ll keep most of their gimmicks and eventaully replace the guys under the hoods (have happened already with Sagrado and Metro) so I think they’ll have an Averno II so the current one won’t be losing his mask just as Abismo Negro won’t lose his.

Perro losing his hair would do it, although there are tons of bigger matches…

  11. I just do not think Perrito putting his hair on the line in September against Mistico is as big a deal if he puts it on the line against Garza in March.
