11/05: Monterrey, Coliseo, Guapito

CMLL LLA (SAT) 11/03 Arena Monterrey [El Norte via John 3:16 as El Martinete, RFC]
1) Celestial & Electrico b Pierrothito & Mini Violencia
2) Astro Boy, Mascara Purpura, Valiente b Loco Max, Misterioso II, Tigre Universitario
3) Mr. Aguila, Sangre Azteca, Terrible b La Máscara, La Sombra, Máximo
4) Marco Corelone, Rey Bucanero, Shocker b Ephesto, Mephisto, Toscano
5) Super Parka L Ultimo Guerrero, Mistico, Averno, Atlantis, Dr. Wagner Jr., Hector Garza, Damian 666 [hair]

Super Parka wasn’t previously announced for the match, but added to it at the last second. It’s his second hair loss this year and a total bait and switch. Garza losing his hair wouldn’t have been a huge deal, but it wouldn’t been bigger than this. A win for UG at any rate. He had a nice weekend.

CMLL (SUN) 11/04 Arena Coliseo [cmll]
1) Mascarita Dorada & Pequeño Olímpico b Fire & Mini Black Warrior
2) Luna Magica, Marcela, Princesa Blanca b Amapola, Hiroka, Medussa
3) Misterioso II, Ohara, Shigeo Okumura b Máximo, Stuka Jr., Valiente
4) Blue Panther, Marco Corelone, Negro Casas b Atlantis, Black Warrior, Olimpico
5) Atlantis, Lizmark Jr., Último Guerrero b Blue Panther, Marco Corelone, Rey Bucanero

Not sure if the 4 and 5 got switched – CMLL has the photos and commentary mixed, so it’s not very clear. Atlantis worked twice, filling in for Sangre Azteca. He and UG won their match clean with Atlantidas, but he lost with Warrior and Olimpico. Ultimo Dragon and Samurai Shiro disappeared off this card – I’m not sure if Shiro is injuried, back in Japan or both.

Stuka replaced Purpura. It sounds like Valiente’s double jump moonsault led to his doom.

AAA posted a news update, naming the title to be on the line at Guerra de Titanes and promising that the full lineup will be out in the next few days. I bet I can guess what’ll be on it.

Guapito suffered a dislocated elbow on Wednesday in a match involving the Guapos and the Stones. Alan Stone knocked him out of the ring and Guapito landed badly ot the floor. AAA says Guapito may be out only 2 to 3 weeks. A dislocated elbow sounds like a worse injury than that, but maybe it’s not bad. Scorpio Jr. is interviewed and vowing revenge. (Maybe they’ll take out Chris Stone, giving the opening to explain why Intocable’s in the cage match.)

– Dark Angel has an entry in the Encyclopedia of Manitoba.

– Noticas-Oaxaca has another interview (or another part of the original interview) with Ultimo Guerrero about his career. UG says he became a luchador because he didn’t study in school. He dropped out high school but he’d tell anyone else who wants to be a wrestler to master a profession first: “the life of a fighter is very short, my physical powers are going to end very early…a professional is going to exercise his profession until he dies.”

NotiMex has quotes from Atlantis and Ultimo Guerrero about their title win – they think the champions were nervous, and they plan to break Ultimo and Bucanero’s defense record.

  1. Also in that MTY match they went from having the hair match to having it be a regular trios match back to being a hair match.

Gotta love the steady booking in Mexico.

  2. Just thought with all the talking that Rayo de Jalisco Jr. is doing, in full confidence of taking Santo’s mask, I just thought this date looked interesting:

    FUKUMEN STORE

    11/11 – Shin-kiba 1st Ring in Tokyo

    4. Mr. Cacao/Great Sasuke/Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs. Diablo de la Arana Negra/Gekko/Sasuke the Great

  3. Monterrey is like total outlaw territory these days. Super Parka losing his hair out of nowhere is the perfect example.

If anyone sees photos of AAA from their new venue in MTY, that would be great. I’ve seen boxing photos from the place, and it looks very small.

I’m not worried about Mascarita Dorada making tv right away. Two or three weeks from now, he’ll probably be making tv every week, and we’ll be complaining about how overexposed the minis in CMLL are.

  4. “Two or three weeks from now, he’ll probably be making tv every week, and we’ll be complaining about how overexposed the minis in CMLL are.”

The mini’s could make TV every week for a year straight and I’d never utter a single word about them being overexposed, even if it meant missing a Valiente, Sombra, Stukma Jr. vs Euforia, Virus, Hooligan match.

  5. Arena Jefe looks like a big empty garage. Flat floor and not very high ceiling. Just like a huge boxing gym or something. It’s named after “Jefe Promotions”, who started the venue one year ago after a dispute with Arena Coliseo MTY.

I was thinking, could it be possible that Dorada is not on tv due to a possible dispute with AAA. I know he’s doing another gimmick and all, but it there could be something keeping off tv for the time being. I did see him on a few weeks ago, doing a promo right before the PPV, and have not seen him since. In the past, when CMLL had problems with AAA regarding guys or gimmicks under contract, CMLL would use the guys in non-televised bouts only. Mascara Sagrada is a good example.

  6. El hijo del Santo isn’t filming a new movie.
That’s just a promotional short “film” produced by the newspaper.

  7. Looks like Arena Coliseo DF has been closing the upper deck seating every week. Clearly, they’re not letting anyone sit upstairs on Sunday, so it actually looks better on tv because ringside and lower deck are somewhat full.

CMLL is definitely losing steam. But it was bound to happen. All promotions do. I remember going to a string of MSG sellouts from 1984-1985. In 1986, attendance dropped, and by 1987, Hulk Hogan vs. Harley Race did 6,000 at MSG for their blow off. But they eventually recovered. I think CMLL will come around again. Atlantis will probably turn tecnico, and I think we’ll see big stip matches in March and September that could help turn things around.

  8. With Wagner gone, there’s no reason for Atlantis to be rudo, and Rey Bucanero tecnico for that matter… but CMLL won’t try to change that much…

  9. MSG eventually recovered and now they don´t do shows at all… all right…

Watching Villano III vs Negro Casas in that IWRG show makes me think the emptyness of Ultimo Guerrero´s words… even if the body won´t go, the guys will climb the ring… and get cheered…

  10. They’ll get cheered, but by fewer people. The rules are a little different for HOF game – UG’s point still stands for the vast majority of wrestlers who will not be Villano 3 or Negro Casas.

  11. I can assure you that the small time arenas are also full of 60 year old grandpas who prove UG point wrong. I guess he said that with good intention, but IIRC, isn´t Villano III supposed to have a career? If those guys can afford retiring at a right time and won´t, the poor local guys are probably into a worse position.

  12. Only reason I think Atlantis could turn is because he has a straight to DVD movie coming out, and it sounds like he’s a tecnico in it.

Good point ???. MSG did recover at the time. But that was long ago. The business has changed, and rent at MSG is $300,000 a night, plus expenses, so there’s no way WWE is running there often.

  13. The thing about that Negro vs V-III match is as much as you hated it there will always be certain people out there who will cheer it. Why? Because it’s good? Hardly. Mainly they’ll cheer it b/c they either:

    a) want to be cool and think cool = cheering for old school lucha… even if done horribly.

    or

    b) are pissed at the current lucha scene and decide to take their anger out by supporting two guys who in their mind exemplify lucha. These type of people are usually stuck in the 80’s. So when you’re watching Negro 2007 vs V-III 2007, they’re watching Negro 1987 vs V-III 1979.

The last comment might not make sense but from watching wrestling live down south in the States it’s SO TRUE. You don’t know how many Ricky Morton vs Bobby Eaton matches I had to sit through… in 2005! So about 20 years after their peak. The fans were going NUTS and the guy in the ring were doing NOTHING. They were even laughing and talking to each other between spots. But to the crowd watching… it was like Starcade all over again. It’s a weird sickness and I always feel bad for people like that. The same type of people that cheered that Solar vs Navarro stuff.

  14. CMLL is so un-mainstream that most guys are not aware Atlantis is rudo now. I remember a soccer game where a fan had a black and red Atlantis mask and the commentators were wondering why was that… one said “he´s rudo now” and the response was “no way!!! Get out!!!”.

Villano III did a tope suicida 25 seconds into the match, how old school is that?
