11/04: Valiente injury, next week’s Coliseo, Accion

Ovaciones covers Hijo de Anibal opening a gym. Arturo’s column was not updated.

CMLL.com hasn’t put up results for Sunday yet, but they have put up newsbites and next week’s lineup. Valiente was carried out of after a dive gone wrong. CMLL says the injury was scary but not serious.

CMLL also notes Black Warrior challenged Negro Casas to a hair match after he challenged Panther last week. I’d think this was going some place. I don’t know how, but you’d think CMLL wouldn’t be pointing out the emptiness of the weekly satellite post-match challenges (and the idea of Warrior having to drop his hair as some sort of delayed payback for returning works, even if there’s absolutely no substance to it.)

CMLL (SUN) 11/11 Arena Coliseo
1) Molotov & Trueno vs Polvora & Vaquero
2) Lady Apache, Luna Magica, Marcela vs Amapola, La Nazi, Medussa
3) Leono, Mascara Purpura, Stuka Jr. vs Euforia, Mr. Mexico, Nosferatu
4) La Mascara, Sagrado, Ultimo Dragon vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
5) Negro Casas, Shocker, Volador Jr. vs Damian 666, Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Mr. Aguila

Of the six guys in that tercera, which is the least interesting possible feud for a hair or mask match? Which match does that mean they’re doing? Exactly.

CMLL.com hypes the debut of MINIS YOU WILL NEVER SEE. That’s their offical name.

According to my TiVo, it had to delete my recording of DeporTV America a couple hours after I taped it (and far before I was home to see it) because the network has set something allow you to keep a recording for a maximum of ZERO days. If someone from WOCK or Azteca America sees this, can you fix that? Someone’s clearly pushed the wrong button along the way.

Accion’s CMLL clips were from the Arena Mexico main event. When did Mistico start wearing arm slelves? (More to the point – what did he do to his arms to need to wear arm sleeves? I hope he’s just wearing them because they look cool and doesn’t need to obscure something.) Nice tornillo in here by Mistico. Best part might have been the Guerrero fans around the arena in the front rows jumping out of their seats and marking out on the clean win for the rudos. This finish seemed to get over in the building, but the bigger question is always how it go over to the people who aren’t coming but CMLL needs to show up.

AAA has Cibernetico, Charly Manson, Chessman vs Mesias, Zorro, Electroshock in Aguascalientes (and in a fog of smoke.) Match is joined with Ciber running wild (seemingly just after the match started and Mesias is nowhere in sight), then cut to him wandering outside of the ring towards someone we don’t actually see. Konnan meets Cibernetico in the aisle, and they nearly completely blow a MISSED PUNCH spot. That’s outstanding. Manson and Chessman take out the rudos with topes, Mesais (still with his entrance gear on) tries a belt shot but gets kicked and Stunnered. Chokeslam on ZOrro, and he’s pinned ABSOLUTELY CLEAN. So that turn is dead already, wow. Electroshock couldn’t have taken a pin there? He’s Electroshock! You know, AAA likes Zorro enough to do a lot of stuff with him, but they don’t like him enough to make sure they do it well.

  1. And Ultimo Guerrero took Super Parka´s hair in the Arena Monterrey show, that last pairing was said to be good, but I read complaints about the whole matche being too long and boring.

  2. CMLL.com hypes the debut of MINIS YOU WILL NEVER SEE

    ………

Yeah, and not only on TV – check out last nights pics (or lack of them) :(

  3. At this point I’d rather have just had a blackout on all coverage related to the jump. It’d be best if I just didn’t know he was working undercard matches that we were missing both in video and picture form.

  4. “They should have left Zorro babyface.”

Can’t do that. He was over. When Konnan turns to lead the charge and dismantle the entire Foreign Legion + Secta, he has to do it on his own so there can be NO DOUBT that it was he, and only he!, that brought the power back to AAA.

  5. Zorro is 20 times more over right now than he ever was before as a tecnico, they actually took too much for him to turn rudo (I guess Peña chickened at the time of AAAMania 2006).

  6. Chui, what show are you watching if you think Zorro is 20 times more over as a heel? If his turn at Verano de Escandalo wasn’t weak enough as it was last week’s TV was a clear indicator that he’s now just another Legion Extrenjera stooge no different than Kenzo Suzuki. Messias and Konnan are the top guys in that group and everybody else is just their henchman…including Zorro.

The part about this that pisses me off is that when Zorro was used properly he was a legit superstar with lots of natural charisma. The story with him being possesed by the mask had so much potential to end with a huge pay off but that one had a stupid climax as it ended with Zorro taking off the mask and simply becoming a Hell Brother tag along until he eventually became one (just because he hung out with them all the time) and all the while sporting a stupid looking beard. And now he joined the legion just for the sake of joining.

I just don’t see the logic in ruining a perfectly good star.

  7. Zorro had no future as a tecnico, lets face it, he’s barely a top 5 pretty boy tecnico only because Heavy Metal, Aguayito and Garza left a few years back, but right now, he´s waaaaay behind Latin Lover, Elegido, Intocable, Alan Stone and even Juventud Guerrera who are more over than Zorro as a tecnico, wait till you hear the Aguascalientes crowd, he’s probably ahead of Banderas by now in how much the crowd is loathing him.

  8. Chui, you’re saying Zorro had no future as a technico. If you’re talking about him jrecently ust before joining the legion then I’ll agree with you, but if you think back to 2006 just before he had that mask put on his head he was a bonafide star with a very bright future.

So you put him behing Elegido, Alan stone, and Juventude Guerrera???

Elegido, as good as he is, he’s not established enough to be more over then Zorro was.

As far as you saying that Alan stone, and Juventude Guerrera are more over than Zorro was, again I ask what show are you watching because that’s just simply not true. You may as well have just said that Polvo de Estrellas is more over than Octagon.

  9. Elegido is already booked ahead of Octagon, something Zorro never achieved (at least not before “joining” Hell Brothers where Zorro became main eventer).

Juventud was, is and ever will be over with the girls, watch the AAAMania match, it was completely meaningless, pointless, dumb and boring and people were screaming their lungs off as if it was Mistico vs Wagner, the Mexican Powers depend on Juvie, when Halloween showed up and attacked Lider and Crazy Boy, no one seemed to care, Juvie got timidly pushed and the crowd erupted… he´s obviously more over than Zorro was.

Both Zorro and Alan Stone are over in their entrances mainly, but Alan is a better wrestler, and at least he’s (like Juventud) carrying a stable on his shoulders. As a tecnico, Zorro was by himself, and now I wouldn’t be surprised if he could take over Secta and carry it.

As a tecnico, he never got this kind of reaction

    http://www.zshare.net/video/47158845cc0fe3/

Not even Banderas for that matter, not to forget Lizmark Jr (who no one cared), or Wagner Jr who actaully got cheered (it’s not supposed to be that way although is totally common by now).

  10. Chui if I wanted to I could also find you videos of Zorro when he was a technico where the crowd went nuts at the mere sound of his music.

Nowadays everybody is booked ahead of Octoagon. I don’t agree with it but it’s a fact so for you to say Elegido is booked ahead of Octagon really isn’t saying much. And yes Zorro has been booked ahead of Octagon long before alligning himself with the Hell Brothers. He’s even teamed up with Octagon.

After this, Zorro was unmasked and “joined” HB, where Zorro was at last elevated at Octagon’s level (more because of Octy’s escapades than Zorro being over by himself).

  12. ??? riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight so that whole time people weren’t cheering for Zorro they just thought Vince Neil was coming out when the music hit. Yeees now it all makes sense.

And when people cheer for LaParka I guesse they do so under the beleif that it’s Michael Jackson under that mask.

  13. Not intruding in the Zorro argument, just want to point out something:

pop = reaction when the wrestler comes out

over = sustained interest by the crowd during a specific wrestlers’ match

e.g. The Oddities in the WWF circa 1998. They got a huge pop, none of them were over though.

  14. Chui you abviously selected cards where Octagon was ahead in an attempt to win the argument, and you’re still not convincing anybody. If I wanted to I could find card line ups where Zorro was ahead of Octagon in 2006 and before, but I’m not going to spend the time doing that because it’s clear as day that Zorro was over the crowd and a bonafide star while he was a technico and long before the Hell Brothers idea was even dreamed up.

  15. The thing with AAA is that many guy say that there are too many rudos, but actually, they are few of them:

Mesias – even if the Banderas vs Manson and Chessman showed that no one really cares about him.

Guapito/Scorpio – not proved to be actually over.

Abismo Negro – He’s way over but he doesn’t really count.

Konnan – Doesn’t count either since he can’t work.

Obviously, there is a void in the rudo camp, so Zorro becomes the perfect fit. Instead of being the generic pretty boy tecnico (and having a dozen guys ahead of him), now he’s pretty much the top rudo in AAA, if Kenzo or Ozz were getting that much heat, then I would agree Zorro was better left as a tecnico, but it is not the case.

  16. The only card in 2006 Zorro was ahead of Octie, was in the hair vs hair match with Manson, if THAT doesn’t put ahead of someone, then you’re in deep trouble.

  17. Chui, you do realize that despite the fact that nobody cares about Mesias and Konnan they will continue to be pushed as the top rudos as if people actually did care. Zorro will continue to be used as just another henchman which is why this ins’t good for him.

  18. Well, a hechman at the top match of the year (GdT 2007) is better than a bonifide star tecnico (like la Parka working Especial in the same event) in my book.

  19. Zorro was the guy upper midcard guy taking the screwed over pinfall loss, because he’d still be over after losses. But he was also clearly topped out there – AAA wasn’t going to push him past Cibernetico or La Parka Jr. or Intocable. Most anything Zorro was doing could’ve been done by Alebrije or could be now done by Mascara Divina (assuming he still exists) or Super Porky – they can equally take pinfalls in big atomicos when they don’t want the actual stars beat (see: TripleMania.) Zorro was over filler as a tecnico, but he was still being used as filler and AAA.

Zorro as a rudo fits what AAA needs right now. The depth issue is obvious – they wouldn’t have bothered to bring back Electroshock if they weren’t feeling a gap of top rudos (not that Electro is really one.)

Zorro has a lot more upside as a rudo too. He’s moved up notches to be 2nd most important rudo (which he had no hope of as a tecnico) and adds a decent->good body on that side where everyone else is worse (Kenzo, Electro) or hurting (Mesias, Konnan could be both.) They could use Waltman in that slot, but they had other plans for him when they turned Zorro and Zorro’s turn means a lot more for business.

The problem I had, via Accion’s highlights, wasn’t that it was a waste to turn Zorro, but that it was a waste to turn him AND use him as filler. I think they should’ve done more to capitalize off the turn. They will with the cage and title matches and maybe since both are those are three ways, they didn’t feel the need to protect Zorro leading into them (or maybe Zorro’s going to screw over Cibernetico on 11/11 and they wanted to balance it out) BUT I was still annoyed they didn’t tease out the first pinfall of Zorro just like Konnan is teasing out the first big bump he takes (or at least that what he thinks he’s doing.) For a promotion that makes you wait for so many things, they seemed in an odd hurry here.

(If I was booking this in TNM, Zorro screws over Cibernetico on 11/11 and those two have a singles match on 11/30 with Mesias defending against Chessman or Charly. If they don’t want to do Mesias/Cibernetico direclyt this year, then don’t halfway do it either.)

I really need to find a way to make this text box a lot wider. Sorry about that. You can see I’m playing with the comments already.

  20. Cubsfan made the point I was trying put across much better.

I guess Banderas is working TNA in hopes of being picked up by WWE, seems unlikely, but AAA has to cover their asses and I think they have Zorro right there if needed. Waltman is probably in the same WWEesque situation.

My feeling is that the “Fake Zorro” (Konnan) was intended to be an ongoing angle for AAA, but they thought Mesias was out for good and brought up the turn right there.

Maybe it didn’t got a huge reaction right there, but now it has worked pretty well, having a high profile jump like heat (as if Wagner had jumped) out of a guy who was there already. Simply put, Zorro is main eventing while Nicho and Halloween are working segundas (if they show up).

I was also puzzled by Zorro taking the pin that soon, maybe they think they have to build Electro Shock or something… or it was just Cibernetico blowing the ending and Zorro not wanting to kick out of the Main Man’s finisher.
