Gran Alternativa Teams Announced’s gotta ’em

– Heavy Metal, Super Nova
– Dr. Wagner Jr., Mascara Purpura
– Negro Casas, Stuka Jr.
– Shocker, Valiente
– Marco Corelone, Flash
– Mistico, La Sombra
– Villano V, Super Comando
– Ultimo Guerrero, Euforia

Tournament will take place next week, June 29, which means we’ve had all of a two week gap between tournaments. (Only the Leyenda de Azul remains, unless they bring back the Gran Prix Trios tournament or something new.)

Mistico & La Sombra are obvious favorites, and Villano and Ultimo will almost have to run into each other at some point. Almost all are tecnico teams, which is a bit odd.

First guess…

Villano V, Super Comando b Heavy Metal, Super Nova
Ultimo Guerrero, Euforia b Marco Corelone, Flash
b Negro Casas, Stuka Jr.
Shocker, Valiente b Dr. Wagner Jr., Mascara Purpura

Ultimo Guerrero, Euforia b Villano V, Super Comando
Mistico, La Sombra b Shocker, Valiente

Ultimo Guerrero, Euforia b Mistico, La Sombra (though Mistico losing at this point seems impossible)

  1. Ultimo Guerrero teaming with Euphoria makes as much sense as… pretty much everything CMLL does. Euphoria is supposed to be Satanico’s last effort to exact revenge on Ultimo Guerrero, so I assume a first round Euphoria/Ultimo vs VXXL+/Super Commando and having Satanico and VIII running in to beat him on.

Sombra is sooooooooo screwed, I expect him to be booed out of the place. Right now, Mistico draws more anti-fans than supporters, Sombra has never been in that position before.

  2. Yeah, Sombra is in trouble. I said this before but I’ll say it again – Mistico was brought in a second match guy and stayed that way for a good 3 months. During that 3 months, he got over with his work and big spots. A buzz was created and it was THEN the promotion gave him the Gran Alternativa and moved him up to main events. Sombra was given the big special TV introduction the week he made his debut and is already a tercera/semi-main eventer. The promotion is giving him ZERO time to fit in and just shoving him down the throats of the fans so they are going to (and have full right to) be extra hard on him. Once again… THIS IS SAGRADO ALL OVER AGAIN. He was brought in for a main event match and looked DECENT in his first week, then blew some spots over the next few weeks and the crowd turned on him b/c they saw a guy who wasn’t ready for main event status being shoved down their throats. Less than a month later Sagrado was a segunda wrestler and now he will never be a full-time main eventer b/c the promotion screwed up with him. I am certain Sombra is headed down that same path.

I’m sure I’ll change my predictions as guys get dropped/added to the tournament, but with these pairings here are my picks:

    1.Ultimo Guerrero/Euforia over Dr. Wagner Jr./Mascara Purpura
    2.Villano V/Super Comando over Negro Casas/Stuka Jr.
    3.Shocker/Valiente over Marco Coleone/Flash
4.Mistico/La Sombra over Heavy Metal/Super Nova

    5.Ultimo Guerrero/Euforia over Villano V/Super Comando
    6.Mistico/La Sombra over Shocker/Valiente

7.Mistico/La Sombra over Ultimo Guerrero/Euforia to win the tournament.

I still think Mistico is going to get pulled from this tournament though. Having him and Sombra teaming is big time overkill and I *think* the promotion will smarten up and realize that before the tournament takes place.

Chui is right… the Guerrero/Euforia team makes ZERO sense. Welcome to CMLhell.

  3. BTW, a little Dragon Gate news that relates to Mexico: DGUSA reports Skayde (as Jorge Rivera), Turbo and Black Thunder are headed to Japan for WrestleJam which takes place in July.

Pretty awesome news if you ask me (obviously). Hopefully they let them oppose each other as well as work with the Japanese guys since a Turbo vs Black Thunder singles match would blow the roof off the place and I’ve always wanted to see Skayde and Turbo opposing each other.

  4. Thinking about a Villano XXL A vs Atlantis masks match down the road, I think they might have Ultimo “injured” next week and making it Euphoria-Atlantis instead, still dumb, but not to the extreme of UG-E.

I think they should have hinted Mascara Purpura getting the push and then surprise all with Sombra getting it… but I wonder if it is the ploy they’re using here and Mascara Purpura is going to win since he’s with Wagner. Wagner is in the same situation as Aguayo last year, so I wouldn’t be surprised, specially if they pull Mistico off the tourney.
