06/01: Name changes, Mexico preview, Queretaro

CMLL (FRI) 06/01 Arena Mexico
1) Metalico, Neutron, Stuka Jr. vs Arkangel, Loco Max, Nitro
2) Flash, Sombra, Super Nova vs Goto, Ohara, Okumura
3) Villano III, Villano IV, Villano V vs Atlantis, Olimpico, Sangre Azteca
4) Dr. Wagner Jr., Marco Corelone, Mistico vs Damian 666, Hijo de Lizmark, Terrible
5) Mr. Aguila vs Sagrado [LdP, sf]

Ovaciones explains the odd names – some people are changing gimmicks

Tigre Metalico -> Metalico
Brillante -> Sombra

Previews: NotiMex, ESTO talks Villanos vs Atlanits (who’s cheerfully ignoring the mask challenges.)

Sagrado’s been making the media rounds – he’s got an interview with Ovaciones and another with ESTO today. He talks about Aguila (will be a challenge even distracted with Circus stuff), Mistico (if they fight, they fight, and then they’ll keep being friends after), and goals (revenge on Texano, a shot at Averno’s title.) Sagrado knows this is a big chance for him and he’s hoping he proves something to CMLL.

Got a feeling that Leyenda match will be bumped to semimain and the Mistico match will end up main event.

indy (WED) 05/30 Teatro del Puebla [Frontent Juarez]
1) Cassandro, Gallo Tapado Jr., Hijo del Santo b Blue Demon Jr., Green Danger, Sexy Francis

Article includes pictures and a 10 second clip of the match.

Local promoters in Monclova talked about starting every other week CMLL events on June 10th. They expect to run 10 this year. Wrestlers hyped for the show include Heavy Metal, Lizmark Jr., Black Warrior, Olimpico, Universo 2000, Hijo de Anibal, Angel Blanco Jr., and Hijo de Cien Caras Jr. I guess they’re going to set the bar low on the first show.

(esmas) A new Mexican restruant has been opened up in Madrid with a lucha libre theme.

El Sol de Tulancingo‘s preview of an AAA fair show hypes it up with a picture of Atlantis and Dr. Wagner. Oops.

The big controversy I’ve totally blown off this week is newspaper photos and passed around videos of masked wrestlers without masks. I’m not really surprised this sort of thing happens and I also don’t think it’s a very ethical thing to do. The newspaper photo was from the match, when Mistico got unmasked for a moment, so it’s not as though the photographer used illict means. It’s not as big a deal to me as the video (which is apparently someone walking around backstage with a camera), but there’s still something tabloid-ish about it.

Mostly, I can’t get worked up about this because the wrestlers themselves don’t seem to care that much. If you want CMLL TV for any length of them, you see plenty of masks untied and teasing of it coming off and times where it does come off and the face is plainly visibly to the crowd. (Oddly, the AAA guys are generally better about this, though La Parka Jr. does the spot a bit.) I’m not too interested – and haven’t sought out any of it for myself, so don’t look for links – in any of this because there isn’t much mystery in their faces.

  1. I don’t think the deal here is that Danger showed a video with several luchadores hanging out in the backstage with no masks on, which sort of shatters the belief that masked guys keep their identities hidden furiously,

I remember one guy I know who was hired to put the fireworks for a show, and then was in the backstage, he was broken hearted when he told me that luchadors take of their mask as soon as they enter the locker room. Because of El Santo movies, the perception is that guys don’t take their masks of at all.

  2. Probably, and I don’t know why you’d want to go something equally generic like Sombra (or why CMLL changed two guys names and hasn’t posted about it own it’s own site – or why change two guys names in the same week.)

Changing Tigre Metalico to Metalico drives a stake into Los Dos Tigres winning the Arena Coliseo Tag Team titles.

  3. “I think it is too early for them to change Brillante Jr’s name”

Yep – they needed to give him a new look that didn’t make him look like a Mistico/Sagrado clone, but the name itself was fine – and was becoming well known through his TV exposure.

Sombra is almost down there with La Mascara in terms of uninteresting sounding, generic names.
It also clashes with Sombra De Plata.

Is this maybe CMLL trying to use and copyright their own gimmicks again?

And Is Metalico not a tiger anymore? That would suck, gotta have our Dos Tigres fix every couple of months.

  4. I think that Metalico, Sombra, Nosferatu, Euforia, Efesto & Eclipse are copyrighted to CMLL, I would say that every guy from Averno/Mephisto onwards is, but who knows…

Maybe Sombra is a generic name like Nombre sin Nombre and at some point they will grant him a new gimmick if he ever makes it to the Semi/Main level? It seems they changed his name to separate him from his opening match status, but it is kind of early for my tastes.

  5. Osiel Toscano = Tarzan Boy
    Ok, now he is Toscano.

I think Brillante Jr is a good name for an opener wrestler. But they may need a refill for Místico

  6. I’m too tired to even bash CMLL on the absolute stupidity of these name changes and besides, you guys have it covered pretty well.

I assume by 2008 there won’t be any wrestlers on the roster whose name involves the usage of two words.

  7. Well next weeks cards are pretty underwhelming to say the least.

Arena Mex is so stacked with the established name guys there’s not a whole lotta room for anything else. And it’s not like any of the matches booked look particularly interesting.

The Coliseo show however, is just lame.I really don’t know what their game is but there is no way on earth they can even be putting a minutes worth of thought into those lineups, nor can they be able to say that they’ve genuinely tried to book the most entertaining matches. Does the average mexican fan actually care about the matches or are they just there to see the famous faces?

That segunda especially is just something else. Please don’t say they are going to be continuing those matches featuring Tony “almost as boring as La Mascara” Rivera, Fabian and the Guerreros rejects like we had every week about 6 months ago? :O

PS – how irritating on the ears are those adverts which automatically start when you open up CMLL’s official site and every subsequent page of it?!
