Joe Versus The World – 53: Alex Koslov & thecubsfan [lucha]

It’s a lucha double shot at JVSTW, as first CMLL star Alex Koslov joins us straight from Mexico City to discuss how he got into wrestling, training at the Inoki Dojo and going to Mexico, working the lucha style in front of huge crowds, thoughts on Mistico, Marco Corleone and others, and a lot more. Then the Cubs Fan joins us for a quick rundown of the big lucha headlines, including Mistico’s injury, Perro Aguayo Jr’s rising star, will Santo return? And much more, including is there crying in lucha?, mathematic luchadores, the evil couch, and much more! Over fifty minutes of lucha fun!

  1. Listened to the show today (plus the Year in Review show too!) while at work and thought it was awesome! Random comments from what I can remember to comment on…

    – First off, you know that Robert who sent in the question wasn’t me, right?:) Next time you’re on I’ll definitely have to send you a deep thought provoking question though.

    – Not lucha related but just to show you how messed up I am, it was only during this show that I actively realized cubsfan = YOU ARE A FAN OF THE CUBS. Shows you how much I check http://www.thecubsfan.com, hm? We’d have a lot more to talk about if you were a Blackhawks fan but the Jays stink so I don’t discuss them… ever.

    – Ramstein gets the big push in Neza b/c it was the old home of the UWA during it’s dying days and he was one of the last young guys their system developed who was showing great potential till CMLL swallowed up all the remaining talent.

    – It’s amazing how almost every luchador lists Virus as one of the greatest guys to work with. Skayde is another guy who always got that treatment. Poor great workers who are so admired by their peers but are never given a chance to shine by any promotion.

    – I don’t get the Apaches angle either.:/ All I can tell you is it will end with a tearful in-ring reunion with Billy Boy and Fabi Apache.

    – re: Mistico/Santo comparison – Mistico will end up performing in front of more fans than Santo ever did, assuming his career holds up, because you have to remember in Santo’s day he wasn’t working every day… maybe 3 or 4 times a week. MAYBE. And later in his career he didn’t work often at all.

    – Ultimo Dragon*cito* was in that sketch two weeks ago hyping Perrito.

    – I think the Monito spot was planned since they’ve done it before. The problem was Ultimo kicked him: a) too hard and b) too low, which caused Monito to flip and thankfully be half-caught by Shocker. You can see Monito look at Guerrero afterwards like “what the fuck you asshole!”

    – The Villano III story about him crying was great. He’s having such a sad end to his career and it’s all his own fault. He could have retired when he lost his mask and been an icon. He could have retired a year later when he was still alright in the ring and had just won another big hair match over Signo. Instead he refused to leave the ring and now is one of the saddest guys to watch in the ring unless you name is Phil Schneider or Tom K. Even the most dense Mexican mark is embarassed by V-III these days and these are the same fans that would cheer Ringo Mendoza and Kato Kung Lee.

    – re: The Year in Review show: How do you do an interview from a parking garage?:/ (Excuse my ignorance on how these wrestling podcasts work.)

Like I said, really enjoyed the shows and hope Joe is reading this so I don’t have to be really annoying and cross-post it on DVDVR. The Koslov interview was fantastic even though his English was pretty rough (which I never would have guessed b/c he spoke perfectly fine English at the NWA convention in 2005). I burst out laughing when he asked “can I swear?” after swearing about 4 times during the show.

Definitely gonna have to check out a few more shows. Probably only the ones with cubs not b/c I’m playing favorites but simply b/c I barely follow any wrestling other than Lucha Libre.

Someone needs to book a Lucha roundtable one day with Cubs and Sims!

  2. >re: The Year in Review show:
    >How do you do an interview
    >from a parking garage?:

All interviews done via cell phone, but I was actually in an outdoor parking lot.

    That was a day.

  3. Geez, that must be one insane cell phone bill.:/ I was always under the impression the interviews were done through the computer somehow, like voice chat programs on AOL IM or something.

  4. I actually use my computer to make calls to landlines or cell phones, and have software to record the conversations.

    Joe

  5. Hey Rob, who is Phil Schneider and Tom K?

I agree on the Monito thing that Ultimo kicked him too damn hard and Monito, through his eyes anyway, did have a “what the fuck” look on his face.

Loved the Koslov interview, and yes what has become of Villano 3 is pretty damn sad.
