05/06: Mistico injury may be worse, Lucha 2000 show, FSE

Mistico’s situation might have gotten quite a bit worse. According to an article on Esmas, he was telling people at the lucha libre expo that he could be out 6-8 months. It appears the initial “3 weeks” estimate is actually how much time they want him resting before they take another look at it, and see if surgery is necessary. If it is, he’s out till ’08.

The story of Mistico’s injury keeps changing. In that article, they’re going with the idea Perro hurt it (as hype to build up to the match, which might just happen a bit later.) KrisZ noted Mistico seemed hurt Tuesday in a match in Cuervanaca, but I think that just might have been the last bump before they got him to the doctor. CAN52 had the kid’s day Warrior/Mistico match from Sunday, and Mistico’s left shoulder was already heavily taped. During the match, Mistico took Warrior’s bullet tope into the front row, with his left shoulder going directly into the seats, and this article credits that dive as well (thought that may be hype as well.)

If Mistico is out for an extended period of time, CMLL wouldn’t necessary half to strip him of his championships, and filling three titles at once might be a bit much. On the other hand, it allows them to get the belts off Mistico without Mistico actually jobbing. I’d guess they’d take away the tag team titles – Averno & Mephisto vs Negro and a replacement partner seems about right – but the two singles titles could be inactive for a half year and it wouldn’t be a problem.

CMLL’s going to have to startnig planning the rest of the year without Mistico. I suspect we’ll get a Perro stips match, and they seem like they’re pushing towards Shocker/Ultimo once again. Lots of stuff will have to be worked out.

Mistico being hurt long term would seem to end his chances of jumping to WWE at this point; CMLL would probably pay him more while sitting out than WWE would, at least until he’s established there.

LUCHAS 2000 (SAT) 05/05 Arena Mexico [ovaciones, Mr. Reyes]

4) LA Park b Villano III, Blue Demon Jr., Villano IV, Silver King, El Hijo del Solitario [hair]

LA Park took Villano III’s hair. Not much to Virus and Valiente were said to have a good sequence at the end of the opening cibernetico; hopefully, we’ll see a bit more of that with Virus’ rudo turn.

Sign On San Diego has a big story on lucha libre, talking a little bit about the shows in Tijuana. Isn’t there indy lucha libre in San Diego? I thought so…

Accion:

CMLL: Main event trios, with Mistico’s cameo. Mistico had three of his belts with him – no IWRG. Aguila had Groon-like painted on muscles. I’m not sure that’s the way to go. Lots of dives highlighted, and Perro picked up another clean win, this time over Negro.

AAA: Highlights from the cage match, with Abismo leaving and Cibernetico and Mesias left in. Mesias chairshots Cibernetico, but Zorro throws in the cane to him and Cibernetico rallies with that, and a chokeslam. No post match uniting is shown.

FSE has
04/29 Coliseo: Averno, Dos Caras Jr., Mascara Sagrada b Mascara 2000, Sangre Azteca, Universo 2000
04/29 Coliseo: Damian 666, Halloween, Mr. Aguila b Maximo, Sagrado, Texano Jr. [MEX TRIOS]

IWRG’s site is still down.

  1. I think the injury is a semi-work, he probably needs to take some time off, so they come up with this, but I doubt he would be out that much. Coincidentally, he’ll be out just enough for CMLL to commit all of their marketing efforts to Perrito, and Mistico might shoot his Telenovela while recovering…

Had him really his ligaments thorn off, he would have been under surgery as fast as possible, but who knows, maybe they are expecting a miracle?

  2. I’m somewhat familiar* with shoulder injuries, and at least in the experience I’ve seen with baseball guys, they’ll risk three weeks of rehab before trying to surgery, because surgery’s so long and risky.

    * laughs, then cries

  3. Oh, but that 3 weeks are taken so that the surgery is easier, or in hopes of the surgery being avoided?

Mistico said that had he not taken the time to rest, then he would have to take the surgery for sure.

The funny thing is that it seems that Parka-ris got that same injury, but via his truck rolling over…

  4. I’m thinking it won’t be long-term either but I really can’t explain why. Perhaps CMLL is spreading the 6 month rumor so that when Mistico return in 1 month he can like Superman and prove he heals faster than normal people! Sign him up for Heroes!

In that Luchas 2000 Torneo – Brillante Jr. replaced Leono and both Flash/Mascara Purpura are still out with injuries so the teams stayed even with no replacements. Weird how Purpura and Flash both got hurt at the same time 2 months ago and were listed as 3-4 weeks. Very suspicious. At least we know neither is Nosferatu.

While watching an FSE show today I noticed Mascara Sagrada has a new outfit. So let me get this straight… he goes to court for years to win the rights to his name and outfit. He finally wins and proceeds to… change his outfit? Only in Mexico.

  5. Holy crap! It must be Henrik’s birthday today and he never told us. According to what I just read – Maximo was replaced on tonight’s Coliseo show by…

    NEUTRON!

I hope he has returned to feud with Fabian El Gitano with the loser having to return to that shitty gimmick.

  6. Didn’t it say in the Observer a couple of weeks back that Mistico’s CMLL contract was up in in June or July?

  7. The three weeks is usually taken to see how well the shoulder is healing on it’s own, to see if surgery is still required. It may be different here, but I think they’re hoping to see if they can get by without surgery.

Mistico’s contract is believed to come up in June, which would be right around his surgery if he has it.

  8. The thing that makes me think this is a work is that booking Mistico is not that straight forward, one has to send them a fax with the tentative date and card, then they would modifiy it and send back and give a date he would be available, this takes a couple of months, so if they are telling that story, then their future bookings will be in peril, if he was really needing a surgery, I don’t think they would be telling since it would make promoters to not book Mistico anymore.

The interesting thing is if they’re going to compensate the promoters, I mean, guys who had Mistico contracted for the 3 weeks and end up havig La Mascara instead, will they be reimbursed?

  9. La Mascara replacing Mistico… that’s like getting your first class ticket downgraded to flying in those cages for dogs.

  10. La Mascara is not as bad as you think, but he is a downgrade of Mistico not appearing.

  11. La Mascara, Leono and Mictlan all suffer from the same thing… they’re too bland. It’s nobody’s fault but their own. They are all far too repetitive and if they were in the States not doing masked gimmicks, you’d never be able to tell any of them apart.

Mistico gets labeled as a repetitive worker and a lot of the time he does work the same spots with the same opponents but he has enough variety to keep his matches interesting and he is suicidal (i.e. his moonsault to nowhere, frankensteiners to the floor, springboard armdrags to the floor, etc.). All the guys I mentioned above aren’t as spectacular nor suicidal so they just fall into the ‘meh’ category.

Moves they all do: Running headscissors, springboard armdrag, tope suicida, flying body press, spinning headscissors.

The only way to differentiate them is:

Mictlan: Does an ugly handspring elbow in every match and will use a running somersault plancha at times.

Leono: Does a springboard moonsault goes “WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” a lot.

La Mascara: Has an actual finisher people like.

It’s just not enough for any of them to stand out. Leono is like a fucking robot as he’s got no charisma and does moves/takes moves like he’s programmed, not like he’s flowing with the action. Mictlan is a downgraded Mascara who is a downgraded Mistico with that lame plancha over the ringpost.

It’s as if everyone who gets gimmicked by CMLL these days and gets any sort of a push is told “be like Mistico” so guys take his spots, do what they can and hope it works well enough to get them regular work. Nobody is encouraged to spread their wings so to speak and try new things. That’s why guys like Valiente, Mascara Purpura and Sagrado are so interesting to watch. They’re always trying new stuff and even if doesn’t hit half the time, trying is half the fun.

Robotic wrestling where you told exactly what spots to do, when to do them, how to sell them and how to tease them is why I stopped watching WWE. Wrestling isn’t fun when you can call exactly what is going to happen next. See: Volador Jr., Alex Koslov and La Mascara against El Averno, El Mephisto and Efesto from a March GdR show for a perfect example. Anyone who watches CMLL regularly should have been able to call that match MOVE FOR MOVE (and they even botched a ton of simple stuff!). It was pretty embarassing and I’ll let them all off the hook except Mascara b/c they’ve proven themselves to have pride in their work at other times. On the other hand, those type of matches are right up La Mascara’s alley b/c it’s all he knows.

Rant over but don’t bother arguing, I’m right.:)

  12. “NEUTRON!”

WOOHOOO! All is well with the world. :D

He’s on Arena Coliseo GDL’s TV taping this Sunday too so hopefully it’s permanent from now on.

If the Metro gimmick was only temporary and he’s now plain old Neutron again, but has moved a spot or two up the cards with more TV bookings, then the shitty gimmick been more than worth it!

I hope that by some stroke of luck, The Guillereros, Brillante & Astro Boy match makes tape in full as well. I’ve always thought Astro Boy sucked from the few times i’ve saw him in AULL but if he wants me to warm to him, then judging by that photo taken mid-somersault plancha, he’s going about it in the right way – he looks like he took off! :) Stuka must’ve been just out of picture assisting him into it as there’s no way he could get that height unassisted!

Rob’s spot on with his rant against sleep-inducing crap like La Mascara. Only thing is, i’d put Mascara Purpura alongside Leono and Mictlan in that group of luchadors who are repetitive and sleep-inducing, but still nowhere near as as La Mascara.

Purpura is like a slightly more acrobatic Leono. He needs to start busting out those top rope tornillos and varying his spots if he wants to stand out in any way. Shame really as the potential’s there. Whether it’s laziness on his part, or just trying to conform to the new CMLL style i don’t know. But either way, he needs to change and put some thought into his work.

  13. I agree wholeheartedly Rob, but the thing with Leono, Mictilan and Mascara is that they are too afraid to step up and do those big spots and move up. Case in point Sangre Azteca and, yes, Mistico.

They are both Main eventers who stepped up their game, you have guys in EMLL who want to be stars but won’t put it on the line to do it.
