CMLL GDR - 12/17/06 (#56)

I think Magadan is calling Sangre Azteca "Hulk Hogan de Tenochtitlan", which is superb.

Lost His Mask: Coloso, who turns out to be Mr. Mexico. Coloso has barely enough holes for breath - it clearly wasn't designed for talking in mind, and everything Mr. Mexico says is completely muffled.  No Mr. Niebla mask? They do talk about that gimmick and the Drago mask loss to Dr. Wagner Jr.

Match 1: Mascara Purpura (c), Fabian El Gitano, Metro II vs Loco Max (c), Arkangel, Hooligan
Arena Mexico, 12/08/06

  1. tecnicos
  2. rudos
  3. tecnicos

Winner: Tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 13:19
Approx Rating: Below average
Other Match Notes: No intros - they might have joined in progress, because it's odd that the first thing we see after the intro graphics is Fabian El Gitano and Arkangel going forehead to forehead in a shoving battle. Actually, there's no time when that's not odd.

1: Arkangel pushes, and pushes, and Fabian turns out of the way, causing Arkangel to fly out of the ring. Fabian has some brains! The rowdy tecnico crew got some new t-shirts, it seems. Loco has a new weird hair cut going on, if you can imagine that. He and Purpura do technical wrestling, not the crew I would've picked for that. Metro and Hooligan are in quickly after that, with Metro getting in a top rope headscissors, and almost braining himself on a dive fake. He lands a Asai Moonsault anyway, smashing his back into a chair. He's got a great pained expression after the impact. The other rudos rush Fabian el Gitano, and whip him cross ring. Purpura boosts Fabian to the top rope, where he promptly slips. Oops! Purpura stalls with kicks on the tecnicos as Fabian tries to set himself, and then gives up and drops from the top rope back to the mat. They're lost and getting killed by the crowd. They try to improvise and Fabian has issues with that, but everyone lives long enough to get the double pin. That was bad. Hey, they didn't replay the botched spots! Score one for the production team.

2: They're actually blowing the whistle for this as we go to break. Fabian is headscissors Arkangel around as we start. He gets booed when he taunts the rudos, because the fans still don't like him. Mascara Purpura does a springboard somersault flip on the way into the ring, likely because he can. Loco tries to take him, and that gets as far as a couple of strikes before Purpura is flipping all over the place. A single springboard armdrag takes Loco out. Once there, Purpura does an astounding rolling-across-the-apron arm-scissors on Loco; Loco clearly assisted but it sure was neat. Crowd still is not on the tecnicos side. Neutron in and scaring away Hooligan with rolling front flips. Hooligan has no idea what to make of that, but lands a back elbow. Purpura reverses a whip into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, and the crowd doesn't hate him as much as they hate his partners. Hooligan rallies back and lands an elbow drop. He's got a weird looking all black mask this week - almost like he's got no eye holes. Hooligan actually wins the exchange and gets to do the dive tease (though he slips on the taunt.) Arkangel and Fabian again, and Arkangel grounds him with a rolling back elbow. Ark waves in help, and Fabian is quickly beat by all three men, highlighted by a triple superbomb. He's done, and Metro's brought in for a camel clutch/boston crab combo. Purpura gets put in a nudo for fun.

3: Important information - Jesus knows the names of all the valets and Magadan does not. Anyway, the rudo beatdown which started before continues. Metro takes a double suplex on the ramp, which seems mistimed but is hidden by a camera switch. Purpura gets his arms yanked. Fabian takes a triple boot and manages to fall correctly, so good on him. Purpura takes the press slam onto Loco Max's upraised boots. Hey, pins? Pins? No. Metro back in, and he takes the double second rope shots to the midsection. Triple dropkick to the head works. I was expecting someone to be pulled out by now. Fabian comes in, throws chest slaps, and starts dancing. They all kick him, and it's great. Fabian side steps a corner charge to start the comeback, with Metro and Purpura adding dropkicks. Crowd is not happy with the tecnicos getting their revenge, though they do. Fabian tries a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Loco Max, and needs to take that back into the shop. Fabian gets two on a small package. A near fall? Fabian tries to get on a submission, but is more waiting for someone to break it up up, and Arkangel takes a little too long getting there. Arkangel and Fabian do a chest slap battle, and apparently Fabian's hurt quite a bit more. Fabian tries the worst sunset flip roll thru dropkick ever, and Arkangel thankfully moves. Fabian ends ups ending out Arkangel with a dropkick and launches after him with a slingshot tope con giro, Arkangel getting hit but not catching him. Neutron quickly drops Loco Max with a fireman's carry slam, and Purpura adds a fine shooting star press for the pinfall. Metro hits the Neutron reverse tope for the pin on Hooligan, and that's the win. Fans are moderately behind the tecnicos, though there's an initial surge of boos. Loco Max is checked on after the fall - I thought Purpura landed the Shooting Star clean, but Loco would seem to disagree

Match 2: Alex Koslov (c), Eclipse, Sangre Azteca vs La Mascara (c), Felino, Mictlan
Arena Coliseo, 12/10/06

  1. rudos
  2. tecnicos
  3. rudos

Winner: Rudos (2-1)
Match Time: 6:48
Approx Rating: good, set up next week well
Other Match Notes: La Mascara and Sangre do shorter than usual pre-match interviews. Sangre's also making belt motions on the way to the ring and picking a fight with La Mascara immediately, so I think we might get the idea. Alex Koslov also does a short interview in Spanish hyping up Sangre.

1: There's about ten seconds of Eclipse and Felino wrestling. Felino gets Eclipse in a leg lock, and then the other four guys walk over them to start fighting. Rudos drop the tecnicos, so it's beatdown time. Sangre kicks La Mascara out, kicks the middle rope to crotch him a s he comes in, and then rips ups his mask. I don't think they're friends. Metal gets isolated and beaten first, taking Sangre's low dropkick. Mascara in next, and Eclipse does a fine job of playing The Muscle, holding La Mascara so Sangre can slap him and talk trash. Mascara's mask is quite shredding - he has to cover up while being whipped - so it's a good thing he's quickly done via double leg bar by the two Mexican rudos. This is where Alex shows he's learned much - instead of standing around and posing while the other two are doing the finishing submission, he adds a completely gratuitous chinlock. Mictlan comes back in, so Koslov gives him a suplex into a facelock for good measure.

2: Rudo beatdown continues between falls, mostly individual stuff. La Mascara, still with the very torn mask, comes back in and everyone swarms on him. He evades the corner, charges, and the comeback is on. Sangre takes off running, and La Mascara chases him in and out of the ring before accidentally knocking him down when leaving the ring. Mictlan bounces Koslov around the ring in the meantime. The refs actually prevents La Mascara from getting to Sangre, so he's still waiting for his shot. In the ring, Felino risks his life to get Eclipse with a crucifix rollup, and manages it - I was sure he was going to be crushed for a second. La Mascara darts thru the ring to get to Sangre, but that leaves Mictlan and Alex back in the ring. Alex and Mictlan in, and Mictlan connects on a quebrada for the fall. La Mascara finally gets Sangre in the ring and goes for his mask, but the refs stop him again and Sangre squirms free. Tecnicos think about attacking the ref, but opt not to. La Mascara ends up out of the ring, getting in an argument with the ref - Tigre Hispano - and I think that's Tony Salazar. Whatever Mascara wants here, he's not getting it.

3: Sangre and Mictlan take turns posing for the crow, who's into this match. Sangre slips while posing, much to everyone's amusement. Mictlan has a handspring elbow, though one with a hesitation - is it new for him? I feel like I know who it is, but can't quite place it. Felino and Eclipse in. They always put the vets with Eclipse. Crowd very into corner chops, counting along with Felino as he gets him on Eclipse. Felino knocks Eclipse out with a clothesline, and Mictlan drops him with a tope. Alex in, and Felino gives him a fireman's carry slam before hurrying up top - moonsault connects! No cover, Felino picks him up to put him in a hammerlock. That leaves Sangre and Mascara alone. Sangre ducks a clothesline, kick, face first crucifix powerbomb! Armscissors cradle, one two three! Sangre is pleased, but he's outnumbered by those who aren't. It was clean, though Felino and Mictlan aren't sure it happened.

Sangre hurries to get a microphone. He won, so he wants a title shot, right here. Alex helps the crowd picture what it'll look like when Sangre wins. La Mascara offers the match, but not with Tigre Hispano with the ref. They start throwing chops here and now, , and then Sangre just boots him low. HA! A fine show of rudoism. Magadan congratulates him. Sangre explains it's his day, and the Pandilla is the best.

That's it. Total match time: 20:07
