CMLL GDR - 05/20/06 (#26)
Recapped: 05/20/06

Mephisto, who's either got a sore throat is trying to do a scary voice, meets with Adolfo prematch. They never put the rudo announcer with the rudo wrestlers, and Mephisto complains about it. Mephisto explains that the arena is going to be filled with people here to see him beat Mistico, and then leads Adolfo on a jog up and down the steps. I guess the ideas of these segments are "look how athletic these wrestlers are!", but they often seem like "look how much free time we had before the show!" Adolfo is wearing a Chicago shirt? That's a shout out, totally. We get more of this late, and it's not really different then the other times theyv'e done this.

Why are dance comp CDs the sole sponsors of this show? What does this mean

Maximo is the guy random ally asked questions this week - and Rosa Negra is the woman. Both seem like nice freindly people, though at no point does Maximo stop being Maximo.

Adolfo talks with Team Mexico in this big atomicos match. Both rudos stand on the other side of the room as the tecnicos, because he's keeping it real. Lizmark is all "we're all Mexicans!" Universo notes that he's fought both tecnicos, but he'll work together today. Warrior agrees to behave for Mexico, and Porky gets really hyper about it. They all shake on it. This is so not going to work.

Match 1: Black Warrior, Universo 2000 (c), Brazo de Plata, Hijo del Lizmark vs Great Muta (c), Johnny Stamboli, Marco Corelone, Ultimo Dragon in a relevos incredible match
Arena Coliseo, 05/14/06

  1. Team International
  2. Team Mexico
  3. Team International

Winner: Team International (2-1)
Match Time: 10:24
Approx Rating: Not good.
Other Match Notes: Porky wars a mask to the ring, mostly because it matches his outfit. He and the valet do a dance where they both shake their chests, and they both have a lot to shake. Warrior has his newly won belt, and he makes sure the crowd knows it. No one besides Porky has a valet on Team Mexico, so the camera spends a lot of time on her. No Team International interview? Jindrak is announces as Corelone, and he doesn't seem to be wearing his Jindrak trunks for once. Stamboli laughs and laughs at Porky and I hope Porky kills him. Muta is announced as "the Grand Muta", and the graphic lists him as "Keiji Muto". He's wearing the full outfit, with spikey face mask and tailed by a young Japanese guy I don't know. (Which would be most of them; from reading Shining Road, it's probably Brute Issei.)

The Mexico chant hurts Stamboli's ears. Muta blows green mist. Warrior, finding something they all can agree on, attacks Ultimo Dragon. I think there's a clip in here. Muta stands back and watches as the other 7 fight for a bit. He eventually pulls Porky out of the ring, and they work together, which is just a grand idea we don't get to see nearly enough from. Porky get posted a couple times. Dragon and Universo work in the ring, with Dragon taking control; looks like Team International is winning the beatdown. Muta chokes Porky with a cable and it is great. Meanwhile, Stamboli is using headlock punches. Porky's been in the choke so long, I thin he'd be dead. Lizmark just reversed a whip to send Stamboli into the post, which means they have no idea who's supposed to be doing what at this point, I think. It's just an eight man brawl. Porky and Muta end up back in the ring, and we get the Muta elbow drop. Muta is surprised by the Porky chant. He's more surprised by Universo attacking from him behind, but works him over, and it almost looks like we're getting some sort of flow here when Stamboli helps him and Team International has some measure of control. Dragon walks in the ring, gives Porky a shrug (?) and just stands around much. Oh, he's waiting for Warrior to get in the ring, because he has no qualms about working him, over. Warrior, fresh off beating Mistico last night, gets lifted up by Stamboli and dropkicked down by Corelone. One two three. (2:58) Not quite the way I would've gone, but I doubt they put much thought into it. Lizmark knocks Stamboli down from behind, and the refs have finally gotten everyone to the apron, so Lizmark just sits on Stamboli and chokes him for a while. Stamboli yell for "Mark", and in comes Corelone with stomps. He looks odd bald. Lizmark sells Jindrak's dropkick big. One two Universo breaks it up. Mexico chants as Dragon helps Jindrak work over Universo. Jindrak gets Universo a backdrop and puts him in a seated surfboard. Porky doesn't seem to have Dragon's ethical dilemma, because he walks right and chops Dragon. Dragon Gets Over It and kicks him in chest. PORKY SUPERKICK. That's it for that move. Porky's all fired up, and he and Dragon exchange headbutts. Porky pulls Dragon over into the tecnico corner - where Black Warrior is standing, despite clearly having been eliminated - and now there's some discussion. Dragon's rolled out, and the referees call the fall? Okay, this is the strangest thing ever. (4:46) Let's watch Muta act like a scary freak to small children - who eat popcorn and hide from him - to distract us from what happened there. What happened there? No replays. Break.

Alexis didn't mention anything in his report on CMLL.com, so it's all a big huh.

Warrior and Ultimo have a pose off in the corner - and Warrior actually wins! They start off, with Dragon doing his tecnico bits like normal. Universo jumps in after Warrior is sent out, and really wants to fight Dragon, but Dragon's not so sure. Right here, my power goes out, causing me to lose a few things (though the recording should come out right.) Ultimo does his normal tecnico routine with Warrior, armdrags and kick combos with the (erroneous) expectation he'll be cheered at the end. Universo takes Warrior's spot in the ring, and Dragon decides he'd rather tag out. Jindrak (I'm calling him that now that I realize he IS wearing Jindrak trunks) comes in, and gets beaten up by Team Mexico. Stamboli, not used to this, runs into help and get tossed. Dragon stands on the apron, conflicted, and Muta continues his match long pattern of walking around ringside like a horror movie villain. Jindrak ends up taking corner moves, building up to Warrior jumping off someone's back into a move. There's enough discussion, it seems like something will go wrong. The move is hit, though Warrior does sorta slip on Porky's back. Ultimo's brought in and tries a sunset flip on Porky. This is what happens when you're not used to being a rudo. One two three. (1:51) Stamboli is slow to realize he ought to be coming in. Warrior works in the 619, and he's clotheslined out. Um, pins, anyone, you need a fall? They wave Muta in, but Jindrak comes in instead. Double suplex, Lizmark standing moonsault, one two three. (2:46) I guess two is enough this week. They beat up Stamboli some more anyway, but the refs have already warded them the fall. Replays here. Break.

Everyone ends up outside and brawling once again. Muta gets in the ring so he can stalk Porky from behind, but the leaves when Porky fights Jindrak instead. Muta has done very little here except for acting like Muta. The essence of this match is summed up Universo dropkicking Jindrak, and then Jindrak popping right up and clotheslining him. There's no flow or story, it's just people taking turns doing moves. Ultimo goes for the sunset flip on Porky again, but moves this time when he tries the sit. Double boot scrape for Porky instead. Warrior makes the save for Porky, and eh and Lizmark work over Ultimo in the ropes. Warrior gets a near fall off a weak clothesline, and Dragon gets a near fall off a small package. Warrior get a half crab, and Muta storms in to break that up with one kick. And no more - Stamboli takes over on Warrior while Muta is warned by the ref. Muta proceeds to stand on the apron, at a neutral corner. I don't know. Stamboli kinda leaves after a boot choke, and Dragon resumes with Warrior. 'Rana one two reversed one two no. Warrior tags in Lizmark, so Dragon brings Stamboli back in. They look tentative with each other - no timing. Lizmark ends up dropkicking him out and pescadoi-ng them. Dragon, always one to pile on, tries for an Asai Moonsault. Fans boo, and Lizmark pulls him off the apron. Lizmark holds Ultimo Dragon in a full nelson, and encourages Warrior to try the bullet tope on Dragon while Lizmark holds him. Everyone single person in the building knows what's about to happen, and they all try to warn Black Warrior, but to no avail - Stamboli pulls Dragon out of the way, and Warrior clocks his partner. They're both down. Porky tries to help out with a apron plancha, which topples Stamboli and Dragon (a neat trick since Porky didn't actually hit him.) This leaves Jindrak, Universo, and Muta, and Universo does a 1 on 2 fighting bit, with a Muta dropkick backfiring on Jindrak. Universo slams Muta, which I find shocking because I didn't think he was going to take a bump the whole way (not that it was much of one), and Universo adds a senton. Universo's all fired up and decides to go up. Muta pops up, blows green mist in his face (at least one ref looking at it the whole way), and adds the Shining Wizard. One two three. (3:52) Fans boo. Universo's face is covered in green. Ultimo Dragon tentatively shakes hand with Muta - and gets red mist in his face. Sucks to be him! Jindrak and Stamboli wisely keep their distance as Muta lurches off.

Interview: Mistico talks to Adolfo. He's wearing a mask that completely muffles his voice, so I have even less  idea what he's saying than normal

Interview: Mephisto talks to Leo. Mephisto is feeling so confident, he breaks out the evil laugh.

Match 2: Mephisto vs Mistico
Arena Coliseo, 05/14/06

  1. Mephisto half crab (3:45)
  2. Mistico up and over sunset flip (1:44)
  3. La Mistica (3:22)

Winner: Mistico (2-1)
Match Time: 8:51
Approx Rating: 90. This was not the Mistico high flying show, but it was the best selling job ever. Perhaps it was too easy.
Other Match Notes: Monito is out with Mistico. Mephisto attack Mistico before he can make it all the way down the aisle. Mephisto helpfully throws Mistico in, which gives him enough time to take off his coat. We're interrupted by the match graphics (unnecessary), and when we see the action again...

Mep is whipping Mistico in the ropes, and giving him the giant flapjack. Monito must've got helped to his usual place near the corner. Mep puts on a Mexican half crab, and works the knee with elbows. Mep's distracted from his attack with Mistico chants. We take a look at a sign, and then the ring, where Mep has tied Mistico up in a inverted Indian Deathlock surfboard (I guess) and trying to get him to submit. No luck. Mephisto lets Mistico up, just so he can keep knocking him down. Your ref is Terror Chino, by the way. Mephitis puts on a leg bar, and Mistico refuses to give, even though he's hurting. He turns it and tries to get the ropes, but Mephisto pulls him back towards the center of the ring.  Feeling that's not getting anywhere, Mep drags Mistico all the way to the apron, and smashes his knee into the ring post. So Mistico selling his knee is going to be part of the story, I guess. Mistico thrown in as the announcers talk about Friday's match versus Warrior. Terror Chino checks if Mistico wants to go on, and he sure does. Back up to his feet, just so Mep can dropkick him in the right bad knee. Mistico drawing from the Mistico chants, but no chant can help you if you keep getting kicked down. Ref checks again, and again Mistico wants to fight more. Whip, Mep spinebusters him, and puts him in a half crab. Mistico actually taps the mat to give up here (3:45) which is always weird to see in lucha. Mep takes his sweet time letting go - he's got a five count! Break.

Mephisto is posing as we start the fall. Mistico is still on the mat, unable to get up. Mep goes to the middle rope and walks across it, sneaking behind Mistico to dropkick him in the knee again. Again Mistico's asked if he'd like a stoppage and he says no. Mephisto puts on a a Mexican half crab blatantly in the ropes - Mistico grabs the bottom rope, and Mephisto grabs the top for more leverage. The referee is far less amused than I. Mep is backed off. Mistico goes up to his chant, but he's limping - limping when he's whipped into the corner, limping when he moves out of the corner, limping when he charges back in the corner. Mep backdrops him to the apron, and Mistico does manage to land and fighting Mephisto on the way up. Hop to the top rope, flying headscissors off. Mistico off the ropes with a slight limp, up and over sunset flip one two three. (1:44) Mistico celebrates from the mat, and waves the doctor over in the process. You get the impression Mistico's excellent selling of his left knee is not much selling. The doctor works on the knee - though how much you can do with it when there's a brace on top of it and you're wearing pants, I don't know. This might have gone on for a while, because they clip to the next ring girl.

Mistico is not standing, and Mephisto keeps him down with a cavernaria. Mistico frantically waves off surrender, but can't break the chinlock. Finally he's able to, and collapses to the mat. Mistico draws the chants one again, but it's taking a lot of work to get up, and he's limping on the run. Whip, tilt-a-whirl into a Mistico small package, one two NO. Mistico pounds his bad knee (the knee brace looks gigantic in this camera shot - must have a knee pad on it too), and he tries to surprise Mep with a 'rana. Mep  is ready for him and powerbombs him with feet on the ropes one two NO. Mep can't believe it, and argues with Terror Chino - inside cradle one two NO. Kids in the crow loudly behind Mistico, who pounds his knee again. Standing up, dropkick to Mephisto's knee, he slips a bit trying a La Majistral and Mephisto rolls free before putting on his own one two th-NO. No one really bought that - I don't think they thing Mep can do it. I'm not sure if Mistico slipped because of the knee trouble or just blanked for a second on what he wanted to do (probably also because of the knee trouble.) Mephisto kicks Mistico in the back and grabs his mask - there may be some communication here, I dunno. Whip, Mistico slides under, up to his feet, into a Mep tilt-a-whirl, escape out to his feet (Mistico's immediately regrets that), Mistico tries La Mistica, Mephisto backflip him away, Mep tries the low blow kick, Mistico blocks that, Mistico tires La Mistica again and gets it! (3:22) Mistico wants to limp to the corner to celebrate but doesn't quite make it that far - he does manage to keep standing.

That's it.
