CMLL Mini Line - 05/13/06 (#223)
Recapped: 07/11-12/06

Welcome To The Show Vignette: Averno & Mephisto - in suits and ties!

Match 1: Hijo del Pierroth (c), Ohara, Okumura vs Felino, Satanico (c), Sagrado
Arena Mexico, 12/16/05

This match aired on GdR #5.

  1. tecnicos
  2. rudos
  3. tecnico

Winner: Tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 11:18
Approx Rating: I said "Not so good" originally. For what it's worth, the first fall is exactly as long as on GdR; I didn't think they'd do edits between shows, but one never knows. Second fall was about right too. I didn't time the third fall.

Match 2: Pierroth (c), Mascara Año 2000, Apolo Dantes vs Blue Panther, Hijo del Lizmark (c), Ultimo Dragon
Arena Mexico, 12/16/05

  1. tecnico
  2. rudo
  3. tecnico

Winner: Tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 8:59
Approx Rating: Average
Other Match Notes:
No entrances. Rodolfo Ruiz and Rafael El Maya are the refs.

1: One important thing which lucha has taught me is that most Mexican men can not pull off bleached blond hair. Mascara Ano 2000 is one of those men. We get a very short bit of Panther/Mascara chain wrestling to start and then clip ahead to Pierroth/Lizmark; do the editors have no sense of taste? They are cruel men. This also means they've cut the end game, though they should've cut these Lizmark armdrags. Superkick, check. Panther gets in his tope on MY2K, Dragon gets Apolo with a backside and Lizmark barely manages to powerbomb Pierroth without inducing death.

2: We don't actually SEE this fall, just replays. Did I miss something? The catapult into a DVD spot still looks great. The Capos held Dragon upside down on his head, Pierroth kicked him one time in the midsection, and the ref put a stop to it right there. I wonder if Dragon complained about an early end to the match?

3: Beatdown still on. I get the feeling we missed the cool double teams from the Capos, and now this is going to be all brawling, and it turns out to be that way. Panther's partners grab him when he's been whipped off the ropes. Panther misses a double clothesline, but the comeback still ends up starting. Panther get a near fall on Apolo on 'rana. Apolo uses two straight suplexes, but doesn't cover. He goes up, and we're looking at Pierroth when Panther pulls him off in a electric chair suplex. Lizmark takes over, positioning Apolo and going up. Middle rope moonsault sorta hits for two, but Mascara breaks it up. Mascara ends up with a powerbomb and covers with his feet on the rope, but Panther breaks that up from the outside. Lizmark lands the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, and builds up the side slam before landing it. Pierroth breaks that pin off, and then it's him and Dragon. What a combo. Dragon gets a sunset flip for two, Pierroth sloppily blocks a headscissors cradle for two and then spits at the ref for not counting three. Pierroth takes the three kick combo, but Apolo knocks Dragon out before he can do any more. the four left brawl, with the tecnicos getting the advantage, and Panther plancha-ing Apolo on the outside. Lizmark sends Mascara out with a dropkick, and works in a tope of his own, sending Mascara over the top rope. Left in, Dragon misses a wheel kick on Pierroth, La Nazi grabs Dragon, Pierroth tries a low blow kick, and Nazi ends up taking it. It's a good thing Dragon goes all the work on the Dragon Cuter, because he does all the work on this Dragon Cutter.

Stellar Moments
Lance: Maximo gives three rudos a somersault senton
Plancha: Arkangel takes out Texano Jr.
Sensational: Mr. Aguila has an awesome tornillo. It's 'tight', in multiple meanings of the word.
only three this week? Huh.

Match 3: Atlantis (c), Tarzan Boy, Rey Bucanero vs Perro Aguayo Jr. (c), Hector Garza, Terrible
Arena Mexico, 12/16/05

  1. Perros
  2. Guerreros
  3. Perros

Winner: Perros (2-1)
Match Time: 7:58 (shown)
Approx Rating: Mostly feud builder, given what was shown.
Other Match Notes:
Why do they do three entrances for one team using the same music if they're concerned about time? No makeup for Rey - I only notice it because I see it in his video behind him. Only Damian appears when the music plays, which we all know by now means "they're jumping you from behind." At least that saves on entrance time! To be fair to the Guerreros, it's hard not to be distracted by Damián dancing to the Perros music.

1: Terrible yells on the announcers mic, which is always fun. He's under the belief that he is a Perro, for what it's worth. Perro goes Atlantis' mask. He gets beat around first, only brawling. Tarzan gets forearmed the moment he steps into to the ring. While Tarzan is taking corner charges, Garza decks Rey for just standing on the apron. Tarzan actually backdrops Terrible's charge and repels Garza with a back elbow. It goes bad for him when Tarzan charges out of corner for a sunset flip, Garza rolls thru, Tarzan covers up, and Perro kicks him in the back of the head. Terrible finishes him off. Rey rips Hector's shirt while fighting him, I think. That ruins his spot! Catapult/middle rope stomp combo for them (though Terrible drops Rey early, making it look weak.) That's it. Atlantis has a standoff with Perro and opting to spit at him. Bad idea with those numbers.

2: AGAIN, we come back to a fall after it's over. What's going on with the editing today? The ending pose was cool. Well, not so much for the Perros.

3: Let's look at Tony's artwork. Then, let's take a look at the match. It's 1 on 3 action, with Garza being the unfortunate victim. Atlantis puts on a figure four! And then he lets go because the fall's not over (and also he wants to bum rush Perro for no particular reason.) The Perros regroup on the outside, so we've got some nice downtime, stuff which could've easily been edited out if you were running long. Just saying. Finally, we might get Tarzan versus Garza here, though they still have to goof around a bit more. Tarzan keeps telling Garza to bring it, but Garza brings a shake. Tarzan is annoyed and turns, and gets kicked square in the butt. Lots of avoidance and mirror spots. Tarzan shoves Garza, Garza checks his pecs and then shoves Tarzan, knocking him into Perro. Perro about flips himself trying to go nuts on Perro. Corner whip, Tarzan slides out, and Rye comes in with a missile dropkick. Rey does the forearm taunt, and gets laid out by Terrible. Whip, Rey over, under, ducks a clothesline, and pulls Terrible down by his hair. Dropkick sends Terrible out, Rey slides out chest first after him, slipping on his way to his feet but straightening up fine enough to pull Terrible down by his hair. Rey comes back in to stand around for a bit, and then we're on to Perro versus Atlantis. Is the crowd cheering for Atlantis? Perro is annoyed and takes of his shirt, whatever they're saying. Atlantis on him with chest slaps, Perro off the ropes, big boot sorts hits. Atlantis goes out, Perro after him with the Thesz Press - that was a bit easy. Terrible and Tarzan, Tarzan ducks a short clothesline and lands a dropkick. Terrible out, Tarzan leaps to the apron, but gets yanked off and lands chin first thanks to Terrible. Rey and Garza exchange strikes. They both run to the ropes, knocking over Baby Richard in the process. They turn back, and bowl over their opponents on the outside with tope con giros. That takes care of another ref. Captains left in, and Atlantis rolls with tilt-a-whirl backbreakers. Atlántida? No, Perro low blow kick. Perro covers, Terror Chino back over to count, one two three.

Match 4: Averno & Mephisto vs el Hijo del Santo & Negro Casas in a CMLL Tag Team Championship match
Arena Mexico, 12/16/05

  1. Averno & Mephisto
  2. Santo & Negro
  3. Averno & Mephisto

Winner: Averno & Mephisto (8th defense)
Match Time: 18:14
Approx Rating: 89. Give me a full second fall and this gets into the 90, no problem. The upset finish is quite the bonus.
Other Match Notes:
And this match starts with "El Combate Estellar" graphic, a still blurry screen of that graphic exploding (for quite a while), a whistle blowing, and Mephisto and Negro already locked up. Did the normal editors go on X-Mas break already? Is someone at Gala really screwy this week? What is the deal? Refs are Babe Richard and Rafael El Maya

1: Mep has Averno down on the mat in a wristlock, but Negro gets up when Mep switched to an armbar, and he reveres to an elbow lock of his own. top wristlock, Mep reveres into a front facelock. Negro tires to power out, but it's not working. He's about to turn out, and gets an armbar, only for Mep to reverse to one of his own. Crowd chanting for Negro as Mep turns back to a top wristlock and takes him down. Negro reveres himself into a cross armbreaker, but Mephisto locks his hands to prevent hyper extension and gets a foot on the ropes. They break. Circle. Lockup, Mep with a back heel trip and a reverse facelock on the mat. Negro's got his shoulders down, sorta, and gets a couple of two counts, but isn't really in trouble here. Mep switching around to a headlock, and cranking Negro's head. Babe Richard right on it to make sure it doesn't become a choke. Negro isn't fighting back, so Mep just lets go and drops him. Babe Richard on him - and Mep dustups Negro, putting him in a Crossface. He's got the chinlock more a choke, so maybe it's not as effective. Mep switches tactics, and rolls Negro into a grounded crucifixes for one two. Mep tries another pin, but Negro scissors the bottom rope. Mep is slow to let up on him, but is forced to do so. [crowd shot] Did Negro roll out? He's back in now. Crowd chanting his name. Lockup? No, Negro slaps Mephisto. Lockup, this time Negro gets a quick spinning wristlock, taking Mep down. Mep tries to kick his way free, so Negro pulls him up to a seated position for some spine kicks. Both men up, and exchanging chest slaps. They look at the crowd, and at each other - Mep with a waistlock, around in front, and ramming Negro into the champions corner. Mep works the his shoulder in to the midsection, and Averno keeps him in position for Mephisto to chop. Negro's only escape is falling out of the ring, but he only makes it as far as the apron before Mephisto grabs him and chops him more. Mephisto tries to post Negro at a neutral corner, but Negro puts up a foot brake and stops him - only for Averno to bum rush him from behind, knocking him into the post. Negro falls hard to the floor. The champs sense weakness, and double team Santo. Double whip, double back elbow, double boot. Santo rolls out, so they check on Negro. Negro is climbing back in, and they immediately stop him with strikes. Double whip, double back elbow by the champs. Double whip, double hiptoss powerbomb, one two three. (5:14) Babe Richard rolls Negro out as Santo comes in. Double face first powerbomb and double armbar for him, and it's over. (5:34) Wish we weren't look at the crowd on impact there, but I expect nothing. Replays.

2: Tony's drawing of Mephisto could use some work, I think. No horns! There's a [clip] here, with the champs still in charge when we come back, but Santo immediately ducking a double clothesline, and landing a boosted dropkick. Comeback is on, with Negro working over Averno and Santo taking Mephisto. Corner whip into each other goes wrong, with Santo and Averno colliding. That leaves Negro and Mephisto, and Mep gets the advantage with a kick. Corner whip, Mephisto follows in, dropkick misses and Mep is hung on the ropes. Negro pulls him in the tree of Woe, and lands a sliding dropkick to the head. Negro reached down for Mephisto, while Santo flies in with a tope for Averno. Camel Clutch and Averno's done; looks like Mep got pinned at about the same time. (1:35)

3: Even minute to start the third. Averno and Negro start. Averno wants a handshake, and Negro wants no part of it. Chest slap, chest slap back, and Negro's holding his chest. Headlock, shot of f- no, Averno just drags Negro around by his hair. Averno grabs Negro by his hair while yelling at the ref. Headlock, Negro tries shooting him off again, and again Averno drags Negro around by his hair. Back to the headlock. Crowd trying really Negro, Negro trying to really the crowd. Negro slips out of the headlock and gets one of his own, and then throws around Averno by the thirds on his head! Averno is perturbed. Averno misses a clothesline, his next is caught, Full nelson spun into a reverse DDT. Averno rolls out, Negro tags Santo. Mep checks on his partner before looking at Santo. Off the ropes, over, under, clothesline falls Santo. Boot for Negro too. Averno back in to help, and they both corner whip Santo. Mephisto charges in and gets kicked back, and Santo pulls of the headscissors/armdrags combo on both. Double clothesline misses, and Averno acidly throws him into a 'rana on his partner. Spinning armdrags for Averno, and that sends him out and in position for a twisting headscissors on the floor. Mephisto and Negro battling with chest slaps and chops. Mep lands a clothesline that whips them both out. Delayed cover, one two no. Headlock, Negro reverse into a knee breaker, holds onto the leg, and smashes the leg over his knee. Still holding on - is he doing an ankle lock? A simulation of an ankle lock, I guess. Negro Does a much better STF. Mep's a far way from the ropes but he's crawling, crawling - Averno's pushed out the ropes to make them easier to get, so Negro lets go, pulls Mep back, and retightens the hold. Obviously Averno can't stand for hat - dropkick to Negro's head. Armbar, into a pumphandle powerbomb one two NO. The referee have a brief argument about the count, but  it's surely a two. Negro's hurting, but the crowd behind him once again. Averno up first, rotating powerbomb one two Santo bowls them over to break up the pin. Santo gets a stern lecture from Babe Richard, but stops listening after a couple seconds. He pushes Negro towards the ropes and goes after Averno himself. Sunset flip, Averno rolls thru, Santo falls backwards to escape the dropkick, and rolls back to re-pull Averno in a sunset flip when he misses, neat, one two NO. I think Richard and El Maya are arguing count speed, never a good sign. Santo off the ropes, spinning armdrag into a small package one two Mephisto breaks it up. Negro comes in to help, but Averno chest slaps him back in the corner. Santo misses a back elbow on Mephisto, Mep grabs him, Averno goes for a running boot, Santo sidesteps and Mep is decked. Averno looks at him as he rolls out, and turns into a chop from Santo. Corner whip, reversed, Santo gets backdropped out to the apron. Averno charges, Negro grabs him from behind and pulls him down - Santo somersault senton into a tope!  Negro Okie Roll on Averno, one two - Averno kicks the middle rope before three, and scissors it after three, except there was no three because Rafael el Maya held up. It looked bad, but it was the right call. Not that Negro and Bane Richard seem to think of. Negro nails Averno with a dropkick, sending him out, and follows with a silla. Everyone's outside - someone's gotta get in if the champs want to win. Negro's tired, but pulls himself up around around the ring. Santo's in, and so is Mep. Mep misses a dropkick, Santo with a victory roll, one two NO! For a second there, neither referee was sure who was supposed to count that. Santo tries a 'rana, Mep powerbomb, Babe Richard counts one two - Rafael el Mayo holds him up, noticing the feet. Richard might have noticed it as well. Babe's count is definitely faster, but only in the sense that it's a normal count. Averno back in, and stomping Santo out of the ring. Negro wants to come in, but doesn't like the numbers. He has no choice at the moment. Kick for Averno, front facelock for him, thrust kick for Mephisto to keep him away, the beginnings of a backslide on Averno, Mephisto charges, Negro moves, and Mep kicks his partner. Negro lays out Mephisto with a big chest slap, but gets laid out by a big Averno clothesline in turn. Averno falls to his knee after delivering it, just slightly less tired. Everyone's looking worn. Crowd loud for Negro, but the champs are still working him over. Double whip, Averno back elbow, double leg takedown, timing's a bit off, but they eventually get it right for the double face first powerbomb. Mep covers one two broken up by Santo! Crowd loud for Santo. Negro rolls out, and the champs are on him - whip, back elbow, and as always with the double face first powerbomb, the second guy walks away on the second try, and the tecnico reverses to a bodyscissors cradle. One - Averno turns and spots the wrong pin - two - Averno finally starts to move, but is tripped by Negro - th-NO! That never happens! Now what? Negro slights back in for something on Averno, but Averno moves out of the way. All four in. Santo ends up whipping Mep in the corner, but gets backdropped to the apron and shoved to the floor. Averno sects up Negro on the top rope, and both champs climb after him - double superplex! Now what? Oh, they're heading up for the headbutts. Crowd rallying Negro - he's clapping to encourage it, but is still down. Ex-Infernales taking too long - double flying headbutt misses, Negro moved out of the way. Negro kicks Averno down, and gives Mephisto a DDT as Santo comes in with an up an over sunset flip - double covers, one two NO! Negro can't believe it. What's it's going to take? Negro indicates it time for a spiny something. Crowd loud for the tecnicos. Champs are whipped into each other and fall down. Santo grabs Averno for the camel clutch, Negro grabs Mephisto for La Majistral, - but the champs escape, Mep first escapes with an inside cradle and switches to a la Majistral, and Averno slips thru Negro's legs to put on a camel clutch of his own! Santo gives! (11:02) One two THREE! (11:05) Champs celebrate like they just won the belts, and can you blame them? Huge win!

Negro is flat on his back, spent. Santo is having a word with the CMLL official who has the belts.

Next Week: Atlantis, Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Mr. Niebla, Ultimo Dragon, Sagrado, Rey Bucanero, Hector Garza, Pierroth, Universo 2000, Mascara Año 2000, Ultimo Guerrero and much more.

Santo congratulates Averno and raises his arm. He'd probably do the same with Mephisto if he hadn't rolled out for a second. Mephisto does come in and gets his hand shaken by Negro. Negro and Santo even put the belts on the champs, wow. Santo shakes Mephisto's hand, though it takes a second for Mephisto remember which hand he's supposed to be using. It's been a long night. Here's some replays. Plenty of time for that. Tony's has Santo's head on Averno's stick. Now here's some generic filler crowd shots so they can kill time (and wish us merry Christmas, sure.)

That's it.
