Pantera lost his mask. Misterioso beat him with La Rosa from the top rope. Pantera’s name is Fransico Javier.

Rey won the belt.

Kenzo Suzuki did wrestle, so that situation must be resolved.

More details if/when I see ’em. (In the morning.)

Chicago lucha this weekend

Of the people from Chicago reading this – there may be 2 – is anyone going to the lucha shows at Hawthorne this weekend? There’s a show on Saturday, but I’m thinking the 7pm show on Sunday.

I figure everyone who’s cool is going to the TTW/AAW show (or the IWA show) on Saturday, but I’m kinda doubled booked for that day regardless. But because of those shows on Saturday, I figure most of the people who might go might not want to do two shows in one weekend.

Still – anyone? I’d even car pool or something. The stranger in the strange land act is getting a bit stale and I don’t look forward to being the only gringo at a Mexican party (again), and I don’t want to be stuck seated next to a father slapping his child for crying too much, as I was for part of the last Congress show.

And if I see a show this weekend, I won’t feel an urge to see lucha next weekend at Congress. I mean, I’m sure their heart is in the right place, but I’m not enthuastic about seeing the same main event I saw two months ago, and it wasn’t even really good that time.

(Not that I actually expect this Hawthrone show to run smoothly, but Felino gets me there. And he’s totally going to still be wearing the mask then – because he’ll keep it on regardless because they figure everyone in Chicago is too dumb to realize it.)

Anyway – anyone interested in going?

CMLL (FRI) 07/14 Arena Mexico – Final Judgement
1) Leono, Tigre Meatlico vs Apocalipsis, Ramstein
2) Lady Apache, Marcela, Princesa Blanca vs Amapola, Hiroka, Princesa Sujei
3) Dr. Wagner Jr., Hijo de Lizmark, Mr. Niebla vs Marco Corleone, Pierroth, Stamboli Kenzo Suzuki ???
4) Rey Bucanero vs Ultimo Guerrero [CMLL LH]
5) Pantera vs Nitro vs Sagrado vs Averno vs Mephisto vs La Máscara vs Sangre Azteca vs Volador Jr. vs Misterioso II vs Felino vs Mascara Purpura vs Neutron [cage, mask]

Ovaciones has a quote from everyone in the mask match. Rough translations:

Mascara Purpura: I will defend my mask with my life
Volador Jr.: Mephisto’s mask will look nice in my trophy room
Felino: Everyone in this match is in danger and will need some luck
Pantera: The words we’re saying are fleeting – we’ll see who loses.
Sagrado: I’ll settle issues with Sangre Azteca in the cage
La Mascara: We’re fed up with the Guerreros, and we’re going to see if they can take it to another level.
Sangre Azteca: Sagrado and Pantera better be careful. I’m going to show that the Guerreros are on another level.
Nitro: I hope the tecnicos are ready, I don’t plan on losing my mask.
Misterioso II: I want Volador Jr.’s mask.
Mephisto: I will have mercy for none, La Mascara especially.
Neutron: No one is safe in these matches. I plan on dying with my mask on.
Averno: The “Judgment” will be for others – I’m leaving the cage ASAP

Always knew Averno was a smart man.

There’s also an article about the cage itself. They’re trying a new way of hooking up faster (a would be record setting two minutes to set up). The first time they set up, for a Mil Mascara/Kamala match (good lord), it took 20 men 7 minutes to get it all together. I just hope it’s secure. The cage itself is 3 meters/9.8 feet high (and the ring apron adds a bit more.)

If you’ve not been around all week, I’ve written about the mask match and the title match

Quick Ultimo’s CMLL LH Title Reign notes
Length of Title Reign: 3 years, 8 months, 1 day (1309 days)
Known Title Defenses: 28 (13 wrestlers), averaging a defense every 45 days
WWE Heavyweight Champions In That Time: 11
Next longest current CMLL title reign: CMLL Minis (Mini Olimpico, since 2003/12/09)

I was planning to joke about writing up a big piece on the tercera today, perhaps comparing it with other scary matches or something. Something worth writing about did happen: according to reports (Japan’s Daily Sports), Kenzo Suzuki has been arrested by Mexican immigration police. I’m thinking he was working with a work visa (or whatever the Mexico equivalent was), and there’s seems to be an irony in that happening in Mexico. Whatever the case, if he’s not free by bell time, they’ll have to try someone else in that slot; I’m thinking a Capo of some sort.

CMLL (FRI) 07/14 Palacio del Arte Lineup [Cambio de Michoacan]
1) La Mascara, Maximo, Ogun vs Hijo de Pierroth, Pierroth Jr., Pierroth II
well, not any more
2) Rey Bucanero, Heavy Metal, Mr. Niebla vs Olimpico, Averno, Mephisto
3) Groon XXX, Rayo de Jalisco, Hijo del Santo vs Ultimo Guerrero, Universo 2000, Tarzan Boy
yay double shots

AAA says the Gronda appearing tomorrow at their TV taping is new Gronda. You ever notice how no one misses the old Gronda?

am.com.mx has a long interview with Bobby Lee Jr. Among other things, he wants a mask match with Santo someday. Back of the line!

I’m headed to a baseball game tonight, but I figure to be back around a computer in time to read the boards and post the results. Check in around midnight.

AAA 07/08

aired 07/08/2006, taped 02/25

They did a 21 minute Zorro/Electroshock, pure techincal match.

They did a TWENTY ONE minute Zorro/Electroshock, pure techincal match.

And Zorro blew the finisher.

This was like the homeless man’s Angle/HBK, except not even that good. I dunno.

AAA’s really got the opposite problem of CMLL, where things are 1.5 times longer than they need to be (with the side effect of stupid stuff beind done to fill the gap.) Except for the opener, all the matches on this show had that problem.

But that match – that match was a special thing in itself. Which I hope never to ever see again.

What a way to finish up. ALL CAUGHT UP.
