CMLL GdR #21

04/15/06

Just your run of the mill GdR; the Perros match was a little bit better than usual, but nothing to tell your mom about. Just enough of Purpura that I need to find a Purpura showcase match (which may be around here somwhere) just to know if he’s a good crazy high flier or a bad high flier.

05/05 news: Mexico preview

Happy Cinco de Mayo, or as I like to call it, Ethnic Drinking Day #6.

Ovaciones is in full preview mode for cards tonight. Rey and Tarzan both make “we beat them bad last week, and we’re going to beat them bad this week” comments. I’m in full ‘roll out the card because I have nothing to say’ mode.

CMLL (FRI) 05/05 Arena Mexico
1) Rey Tigre, Tigre Blanco, Tigre Metalico vs Dr. X, Mr. Mexico, Nitro
2) Maximo, Pantera, Satanico vs Hombre Sin Nombre, Masada, Okumura
3) Heavy Metal, La Mascara, Negro Casas vs Averno, Misterioso II, Olimpico
4) Rey Bucanero, Tarzan Boy, Universo 2000 vs Damian 666, Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Mr. Aguila
5) Dos Caras Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr., Mistico vs Atlantis, Black Warrior, Ultimo Guerrero

I don’t know about you, but the finishes to last week’s matches still kind of bug me. They don’t have any big matches set up for the rest of the year, which would be fine if it’s December. Sadly, it is May.

They teased Hector vs Ultimo in a stakes match last week. If they couldn’t get Black Warrior to lose his mask, how would they get Ultimo Guerrero. (He may be close to the Dr. Wagner Jr. level, where his mask is worth so much, no one can afford to pay him to drop it.) Certainly Hector’s not going to lose the title match and the hair match, so I think that’s just a match they’re taking around country for a while.

The main event will surely feature another tease at Wagner and Atlantis, but I think we know the score there. This seems more like a Sunday card with that main event. On Guerreros del Ring, they’d been pushing a Wagner/Mistico team, and they’ve done with trios with Dos before, but it’s typically been Negro and Mistico on Fridays.

With next week’s big showcase being Mexico vs the World, you’d think they wouldn’t have the World all the way done in the segunda this week. Pantera must have a deal where he gets to be in every Arena Mexico which might air on Guerreros del Ring.

Even LOS TIGRES DEL RING can’t get me fired up for this card. I hope something interesting breaks, but I don’t count on it. Next week should be better

Konnan was on Figure Four Daily, and I thought it was a good interview; all the stuff on Lucha Week has been worth listening to, but Konnan’s story of getting into wrestling was worth the price of admission alone. Today’s show has Dr. Lucha Steve Sims, and I believe it’s a free show, so everyone should check that out.

Dragon-Rojo.com has pictures of last weekend’s AAA taping.

FMLL is running another benefit show for Piloto Suicida this weekend in LA.

As I figured, NJWP-LA’s “La Gran Convocatoria” is pretty much all So Cal lucha workers.

Fuego
Impacto
Shamu Jr.
No Fear
Acero Dorado
Chilango
Guerrero de Sangre
Phoenix Star

The thing I don’t know is who’s the ringer; I have absolutely no proof, but I’d believe NJPW’s got someone working under a false name and mask here more than I’d believe they’re bringing in a guy who’d be a complete unknown in their world (even if they’re talented.) I know I’ve seen Shamu and Chilango at least working for FMLL and Lucha Va Voom in Chicago – I bet I’ve seen more, and would know if I just checked the DVDs I got.
