CMLL Mini Line
GALA Air Date: 01/01/05 (#163)
Recapped: 06/02/05

I believe this is take #2 at doing this show. Hopefully my computer won't crash this time too.

Welcome To The Show Vignette: Texano Jr - because we've got Guerreros vs Guapos coming up.

Interrupting the Dr. Morales' hype: Sangre Azteca - to provide a counter point. Sangre is pretty low on the totem pole to be pulling this stunt. Morales gets leaves him with the microphone, so Sangre can declare himself forever Pachua champion.

Match 1: Dr. Wagner Jr. (c), Universo 2000, El Terrible vs Shocker (c), Mr. Niebla, Blue Panther
Arena Coliseo, 10/19/04

  1. tecnicos
  2. tecnicos

Winner: tecnicos
Match Time: 5:48
Approx Rating: skip
Notes: A lot more angle than match. Following up Wagner teaming with the tecnicos on #162 and getting a post match rudo beatdown, Wagner continues his road to the tecnico side. Wagner is hugging people with Wagner masks on the way to the ring and attacking Terrible bfore the match, so you know how it's going to be from the get go. Universo turns on him in no time, and the 'match' is the rudos beating on Wagner, and the tecnicos fighting the rudos. As the match goes, it's becomes more focused to help out Dr. Wagner, although the match itself is never really focused.

The number advantage (Wagner abstaining) lead to the first fall finish. Commercial break between falls one and two. Second fall eventually gets into the "tecnicos beating the rudos when they can keep it in the ring" bits, including Niebla sequence #1. Dr. Wagner and Shocker do a minute of a good exchange before Universo and Terrible pull out Wagner to beat him down, and that's how we end it.

Tecnicos walk off again on Wagner like last week, but do come back for the save this time. Not a really good save because Wagner gets beat up again, but they tried this time.

Throughout the show, there were advertisements for the upcoming double hair match. First one aired here.

Match 2: Misterioso II, Texano Jr., Alan Stone, Leono, Tigre Metalico vs Olimpico, Nitro, Dr. X, Sangre Azteca, Loco Max in a 10 Man Cibernetico
Arena Mexico, 10/22/04

  1. Tigre small package Nitro (9:20)
  2. Sangre top rope headscissors Tigre (9:54)
  3. Texano fireman's carry backbreaker Loco (11:14)
  4. Olimpico reverse abdominal stretch cradle (11:45)
  5. Dr. X hangman spinning DDT (13:43)
  6. Alan Stone headscissors cradle Sangre Azteca (15:25)
  7. Misterioso Gory Neckbreaker Dr. X (16:43)
  8. Olimpico small package Alan Stone (17:42)
  9. Olimpico sunset flip Misterioso (20:29)

Winner: Guerreros (Olimpico)
Match Time: 20:29
Approx Rating: good
Notes: There's nothing but pride on the line here (and a vague promise of an upper card match to come) between the Guapos and the Guerreros - which is more about the more tenured undercarders being annoyed with the newcomers (though Alan Stone doesn't really fit.) They listed the names for each guy, but didn't match them up with faces. Shocker and Ultimo Guerrero accompanied their sides, and it looks like they leave, but they're in the corners during the match. Guerreros did the huddle dance before the match. Guapos did their own huddle as well. Break before the match.

We don't hear an opening whistle.

1: Tigre vs Dr. X.

2: Misterioso vs Nitro
first actual pinfall attempt - 1 count

3: Leono vs Sangre Azteca
Sangre unleashes a massive open hand slap on Leono. Leono gets the first two count on a rollup. Leono also screams. First complete mirror sequence with standoff

4: Alan Stone vs Loco Max
Most one sides yet. First dive tease.

5: Texano Jr. vs Olimpico
Everyone now in once. Texano's white belt trunks looks dumb. Exchange of bridging back covers. Standoff - but they sh ove and slap before leaving.

6: Tigre vs Dr. X
Some alarm is going is roaring during this match. It comes and goes during the match, which probably means a fan is doing it. We end with a Tigre dive tease.

7: Misterioso vs Nitro
They seem a little unsure of each other on the first whip sequence but then keep doing them, so I guess they don't mind. Misterioso performs the first dive - a thru the ropes tope - but catches himself on the ropes and barely gets any distance on it. Everyone lives to pose.

8: Leono vs Sangre Azteca
Sangre gets a lot of air under his jumping spin kick. Leono is a bit slow for his moves, Sangre having to play dumb twice early on because of bad timing. He also slips off Sangre on a crucifix rollup (or maybe armbar) attempt, and the fans get on him a little. They don't look too smooth for the rest of the sequence, thru Sangre dropkicking Leono off the apron, then coming out to throw him back in.

9: Leono vs Loco Max
Loco takes advantage of his opponents weakness, landing a powerbomb w/cradle in short order. Loco gets two, but celebrates it like three (which was easier to do than normal; I know I was sure this was a three count when I first recapped this, and now I'm not sure how I got that idea.) Loco's celebration is much the 'in your face, Shocker!' kind, and leaves himself open for

10: Alan Stone vs Loco Max
Alan springboards Loco Max out, leading directly to

11: Alan Stone vs Olimpico
Olimpico tries to sneak in a senton, but no dice. Alan outsmarts Olimpico, getting in a 'rana and faking a dive.

12: Texano Jr. vs Dr. X
Sunset flip into pin reversals spot. Texano tries for a rocking horse, but Dr. X escapes, and makes the tag soon after.

13: Tigre vs Nitro
Nitro hits the drop toe hold/dropkick to the face combo. Metalico runs up the ropes but misses on the top rope somersault bodyblock. Texano's missed clothesline leads him to be wrapped into a small package for the first elimination. Nitro is eliminated (5 Guapos, 4 Guerreros)

14: Tigre vs Sangre
Sangre tries the ambush dropkick to no avail. Reversals and counters lead to Sangre running up the ropes and taking Tigre off with a top rope headscissors. That'll take care of him. Tigre Metalico is eliminated (4 Guapos, 4 Guerreros)

15: Misterioso vs Sangre
Looks like Sangre tags out here, but Misterioso dropkicks him a couple times anyway. Maybe he thought it was a high five. Maybe it was. Second dropkick takes Sangre out, but Misterioso trips him up on an Asia dive attempt.

16: Alan Stone vs Loco Max
Loco Max trips up Alan and stomps him. Off the ropes near miss sequence, leads to a "you can't knock me down" bit (Loco can!) Alan rolls out.

17: Texano Jr. vs Loco Max
Loco starts to reach for a tag but pull short, right before walking into Texano's spin kick. Texano blocks a sunset flip, but thinks he can follow that with an off the ropes legdrop. Reverse whip leads to a Texano fireman's carry back breaker for the fall. Loco Max is eliminated (Guapos 4, Guerreros 3)

18: Texano Jr vs Olimpico
Olimpico dropkicked Texano while he was still celebrating. Alan Stone is still down on the ramp from Loco Max's second dropkick, which didn't look life threatening. Texano escapes the "keeping it even" principle of ciberneticos, being knocked out of the ring by a running knee before a pinfall could be had, likely because...

19: Leono vs Olimpico
This guy is a much more likely suspect. Olimpico has to work to get him to flip over on a backdrop, and finishes him right after with a reverse abdominal stretch cradle. Leono is eliminated (Guapos 3, Guerreros 3)

20: Misterioso vs Olimpico
Misterioso misses his ambush dropkick. We're well into the "every cover is a three count" section of the match. Misterioso hits a superkick that's about sternum high, then takes a monkey flip and armdrag off the ropes to send Olimpico out. Over the top rope tope con giro is much better than his first dive.

21: dive train
Dr. X wants to add a running dive, but no one's standing for him. He ends up with a pescado on Misterioso. Alan immediately follows with a springboard plancha. Sangre goes top rope, grabbing the post for balance, and lands his plancha on Alan. Texano teases it out, waiting for people to get up for him, and does a slingshot tope con giro on Sangre. Everyone's getting counted out, so people crawl back to the ring and their corners.

22: Texano Jr. and Dr. X
Texano throws a tired looking dropkick on Dr. X. Dr. X misses on a big boot, hanging himself up. Texano trips him to the mat, but only gets two on a springboard splash. Corner counter sequence ends with Dr. X giving Texano a hangman spinning DDT to eliminate him. Texano Jr. is eliminated. (Guapos 2, Guerreros 3)

23: Misterioso vs Olimpico
The two collide in the middle of the ring, Olimpico coming on top. Weak looking F5. Tag to Sangre for double teaming.

24: Misterioso vs Sangre (and Olimpico)
Missile dropkick goes bad. Olimpico rolls out, and Misterioso collected Dr. X. FU for Sangre. Tag to Alan for double teaming.

25: Alan (and Misterioso) vs Sangre
Missile dropkick goes bad. Ha. Alan works over Sangre with chops. Sangre reveres a standing fireman's carry to a deep inside cradle for two. Alan can't be knocked down again, until again he is knocked down. Alan comes back with dropkick to the knee, and a headscissors cradle for the pin. Sangre Azteca is eliminated (Guapos 2, Guerreros 2)

26: Misterioso vs Dr. X
Misterioso misses the charging dropkick. Long look at the crowd but no sound jump. Misterioso's WOW crossbody gets reversed for a two count. Dr. X's Eye of the Hurricane gets 2. Kick reversal exchanges ends when Dr. X lands a wheel kick. He doesn't have enough left to take advantage. Dropkick to the knee by Misterioso. Misterioso is careful setting it up, but lands the Gory Neckbreaker for the pin. Dr. X is eliminated. (Guapos 2, only Olimpico remains)

27: Misterioso vs Olimpico
Olimpico demands to face Misterioso, and Misterioso obliges. Olimpico quickly lands a drop toe hold, elbow drop combo. Olimpico dropkicks Misterioso out of the ring, but the dropkick doesn't look good on TV. (I think it actually hits, but not well, and camera makes it look like a whiff.) Olimpico starts running for a dive.

28: Alan Stone vs Olimpico
Alan surprises him with a springboard sunset flip for a dramatic two. Alan works over Olimpico with chops, and a spinebuster, but his crooked figure four is counted by a small package for a shock three count. Alan Stone eliminated (only Misterioso and Olimpico remain)

29: Misterioso vs Olimpico
Olimpico over does it on the open hand slaps and pays for it. Misterioso over does it on the kicks and we miss exactly how he pays for it, but a trip and a two count seem to be involved. Again, Misterioso seem sot go to the kick well too much, but reverses Olimpico's scoop into a 'rana for a dramatic two. Maybe a clip here. Corner clothesline by Misterioso to set up a top rope move. Top rope 'rana and Olimpico lands the top rope powerbomb for a more dramatic two. Olimpico slams Misterioso and heads to the top rope, not sure of his decision the whole way. Somersault senton misses, Misterioso covers for two. Misterioso calls and sets up for the Gory Neckbreaker as they move around the ring, towards the near/left corner, right in front of Shocker. Olimpico reverses it into a sunset flip to win the match. Misterioso eliminated, Guerreros win. (Olimpico sole survivor.)

After a break, Olimpico and Shocker have an exchange off words.
Shocker: Good job winning a match you should be way too old to be involved in.
[two sides standoff]
Olimpico: We won. I'll be happy to show you how good I am RIGHT NOW.
Shocker: Let me think about it - no.
Ultimo: My guys are better and bigger stars than your guys. We won.

Nothing gets settled.

Match 3: El Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Hector Garza, Ultimo Guerrero vs LA Park, Shocker, Mistico
Arena Mexico, 10/22/04

  1. rudos

Winner: Rudos (2-1)
Match Time: 6:33 seen
Approx Rating: fine for a third fall
Notes: Joined in progress. We do get graphics to explain the teams. Very evident which team won the last fall, just by the way the rudos are angrily stalking around outside and not in a hurry to mix it up. Garza and Park exchange infinite "chop you down, pick you up, chop you down" bits until Perro Aguayo puts an end to the madness. Park makes the rudo team work go all bad, as you might expect. Ultimo/Park spot here - not the powerbomb, though. Perro and Mistico are next. Perro clobbers Mistico in the ring and on the ramp. Perro's good at clobbering and Mistico's good at being clobbered. Mistico gets a mini comeback off a run up the ropes diving armdrag, but gets clotheslined back down. Mistico actually gaining control by ducking a cross body is kinda a lesser moment, though it's in that order so they can do a dive tease. Shocker and Ultimo punch battle next. They do the Shocker/Ultimo sequence (which doesn't look as good), and then Shocker fakes a dive, but rolls out of the ring anyway to boot Ultimo in the chest. Mistico and Garza battling, with Garza blocking Mistico's sunset flip with a punch to the head, pinning Mistico, and pulling him up at two. Clothesline, cover, Garza lets go to complain about the slow count. Garza holds Mistico in a waistlock in front of the tecnico corner, prompting Park to do a top rope sunset flip. Bad idea, since it gets Mistico German suplexed onto Park's knees. Aguayo comes in to help beat both guys down, but Mistico ducks a double team clothesline, then ducks a Garza clothesline and lands a slingshot corkscrew plancha on Aguayo. Garza gets a DDT on the apron from Park, and is pulled to the floor for a Park ropeflip moonsault to the floor. Shocker and Ultimo left, Shocker gets the reinera, Ultimo slips out for the inside cradle with ropes, one two three. (6:33) Shocker really needs to think of a counter for that.

Stellar Moments
El Tope:
Mini Olimpico goes thru the ropes and into Fire
Lo Doloroso: Super Comando gives Sombra de Plata a Gory Neckbreaker
El Castigo: Dr. X takes a dropkick to the face while hanging upside down in the ropes.
El Rudo: Nitro gives Virus a hiptoss off the apron and to the floor.
Lo Dramatico: Universo drops Blue Demon with the Black Hammer

Vignette: El Hijo de Santo says tonight is the night of Santo - 22 years of wrestling, and he'll defend his title over his grand rival, Averno. That's a bit of stretch, but Santo is polite about it.
Vignette: Averno, much more agitated, promises to ruin the celebration by taking the title. And then they'll be having a party for him!

Match 4: Averno vs El Hijo del Santo in a WWA Welterweight Championship match
Arena Mexico, 10/22/04

  1. Santo sunset flip (5:09)
  2. Averno double underhook faceslam (1:26)
  3. Santo sunset flip (10:01)

Winner: Santo
Match Time: 16:36
Approx Rating: 89

Other Match Notes: Olimpico is Averno's second - I don't pay attention at first and think it's Ultimo, but no. Mistico is Santo's cornerman. This is announced as Welterweight Champion, WWA Version. No time limit. Averno is weighing in at 80 KG (about 176 pounds.) Santo is weighing in at less, which kinda surprises me; Santo seems like a bigger guy than he actually is, at least to me. Anyway, it's 78 KG for him, probably 172 pounds. Make your guesses about the Welterweight Limit based on those numbers. Pose with the belt, while the referee gives them both instructions. Santo offers a handshake - Averno is hesitant but accepts

Circle. Averno's distracted by the Santo chants. Circle. Lockup. NO one's getting control as they go lower, and then back up - they break. Circle. Lockup, Santo armdrag gets them both down, but Averno gets free and to the ropes before more can go on. Circle. Lockup, Averno with an arm underhook, and a hipblock takeover. Averno stands over Santo's arm, and rolls forward, stretching over Santo and giving him a complete roll. Averno covers while keeping the arm in a scissors, one two bridge up, one two kickout. Circle. Lockup. Santo with a wristlock, eventually using it to spin Averno to the mat. Santo scissors the arm and drops down to the mat - not exactly a cross armbreaker, but he's got the arm at an angle. Averno manages to roll backwards to his feet, and use his barred arm to hook one of Santo's legs while Santo still has the armbar on. One two Santo breaks up the pin by scissoring Averno back to the mat. Averno again rolls back into a pinning position, one two Santo rolls him down. Averno tries turning to his side and getting up, still dealing with the armbar. Santo is stood on his head but Averno in the process, but scissors Averno down before letting go off the armbar. Averno checks his arm. Circle. Averno starts to act like he wants a test of strength, then charges and gets a single leg. Averno tries to roll Santo to his feet (Santo flips over to his side and gets up normal like instead), and armdrags him down. Armbar, but Santo kips up and armdrags out. Again, they back off. Mistico is watching and probably chewing gum. Looks like Averno got another takedown in the meantime, but he's taking the headstand headscissors from Santo. Santo holds on, cranking Averno's neck on the way to the mat. Averno gets to his feet for another pin attempt, but pays for it as Santo headscissors him down again. Averno won't quit. At least he won't yet. Averno gets to his feet again, and Santo, realizing his ring positioning, turns over to his stomach, climbs the ropes with his hands, and gives Averno a modified kip up headscissors. That sends Averno out of the ring, and he takes a moment to get over his frustration. Olimpico gives him a pep speech. Averno beats the count back in. Averno tries to get the crowd to cheer for him. Eh, no. Averno single leg, into the corner - stop and turn around, over with a roundoff (that was a weird sequence), slide under Santo leapfrog, catching Santo in a standing fireman's carry and taking an armdrag anyway. Santo charges Averno, Averno waves him into the ropes, Santo back with a over the top sunset flip one two three! (5:09) That was slightly quick, not that it's gonna help Averno now. Cornerman check on the participants as we check on the replays.

Santo wastes no time, taking Averno down with a headscissors. Another, better looking one, follows. Off the ropes, waved by, tilt-a-whirl countered into a spinning armdrag. Thru the ropes tope! Santo didn't get much distance, but there's was not much distance to go. Olimpico urges Averno to get up and in as Santo walks around the outside and recovers. Both in, Santo waved by up, and down with a 'rana one two NO. Santo off the ropes, waved by, spinning headscissors countered into a face first powerbomb! Averno picks Santo right backup - double underhook face first bomb one two three! (1:26) We need to give the move an Averno-ish name one of these days. Is it really a title match in CMLL without one fall of disappointing length? I guess not.

Break for replays, which gives me time for a huge sneeze. Eww.

Averno, not particularly patient, appears to be attacking Santo as we come back. We've just seen the ring girl show the round card, but I haven't heard a whistle. Oddly, the referee counts a fall after a standing moonsault by Averno, one two NO. And then he hits the mat again after for no particular reason. Whistle must've been clipped out by the break, so we'll count it from when we saw the fighting. Lots of time left in the show, although I'm sure we've got a break and lots of post match. Averno with a standing fireman's carry - spun out into a flapjack. One two no. Averno off the ropes, boot to Santo's midsection knocks him out of the ring. Averno rushes for a dive, Santo sidesteps, Averno slides out of the ring, Santo charges him, Averno catches him, loads him up on his shoulder, and runs him head (shoulder) first into the post. One guy is chanting for Averno as both guys take their time on the outside. Averno in first, though he's a bit slow. Maybe because he walked all the way to the other side of the ring and came in there. Averno tries a punch, Santo blocks, Santo tries a punch, Averno blocks, Averno suplex in, but Santo turns it into a small package one two NO. Both need a moment to recover. Santo off the ropes, waved by, Averno tilt-a-whirl reversed into a small package, one two NO. Ref stopped counted before the kickout, oops. Both up, both backing away from each other to the ropes, Averno charges, Santo hiptosses him out of the ring (!), Averno landing mostly on his feet. Santo pescado! Olimpico and Mistico there to do the towel waving as we take another look. Both guys crawl back in. Santo off the ropes, waved by, and caught in an Averno abdominal stretch! Surely this title will change hands right here on an abdominal stretch! Fans are loud for Santo. Fans are loud. Santo reverses it, and picks Averno's leg for extra pressure. Averno waving that he won't give. Santo lets go, and there's a bit of untangling till Averno takes them both down with a hipblock takeover. Both up, Santo with a shoulderblock, to the ropes, springboard - oh, no, he wanted to jump that into a victory roll, but didn't get near enough height and just bounced into (and off) Averno's head. Averno picks Santo up, and powerbombs him down. Feet on the rope! One two NO. Crowd didn't want it to end that way. Averno tired but Olimpico yelling for him to keep it going. Both very slow. Averno loads Santo up in a Gory Special. That could get it done. Santo reverses it while still on Averno's back, and then turns it into a sunset flip one two NO. Crowd thought that was it. Santo with a corner whip for Averno, reversed, Averno charges into boots, Santo charges out into a powerslam one two NO. Dramatic slow count there didn't help Averno. Look at Mistico. Look at Olimpico. Averno up quicker this time, messy looking scoop slam, like he didn't have a good hold of him. Averno slowly heading up. Can't be a good idea. Averno all the way up, top rope somersault senton comes up empty. Santo quick to the rope his, top rope somersault senton connects. Santo goes for the camel clutch very close the ropes. Averno fights the arms getting hooked, but Santo gets it. Averno doesn't want to give up - and he gets his foot on the ropes. Referee is a bit slow to pick it up, and Santo leaves the hold on for the four count. Santo waits for Averno to get up. Averno misses a dropkick, Santo stepping out of the way. Whip, reversed, Santo tries the up and over sunset flip again, but Averno's not letting him go over this time - powerbomb! One two NO! Both guys are spent. Averno misses a clots lien, lands a kick, powerbomb - no, Santo faceslam! Camel Clutch on in the middle of the ring - and that's it. (10:01)

Break.

Replay of the finish from as many angles as we can find, and that's it.
