CMLL Line - 02/21/04 (#116)

Vignette: Atlantis and Niebla want you to watch their big match tonight - and vote for their homie Omar on Big Brother. K. We get lots of mentions of Big Brother all night.

Vignette: Sounds like someone got a FFX Soundtrack CD. Ultimo is getting ready in the locker room as Rey carts in. One five step handshake later, Ultimo tells Rey they've got a tough match. Virus and Sagrado doesn't worry Rey, but Ultimo is concerned about Panther, and Virus is SuperLight Champion and Sagrado is good and I think he's stretching. Rey's not as worried, I think making a Virus Is Short joke before reminding Ultimo that they're the Guerreros and winning is what they do. Ultimo borrows some oil or lotion from Rey as we leave.

1 Emilio Charles Jr., Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero vs Virus, Panther, Sagrado
11/25/03, Arena Coliseo
50
3 trios 1:25 DQ (Ultimo low blow kick Virus) too short to be much of anything

Notes: Joined in progress and there's not much here for us to see. The pre match set up takes more time, I think.

Virus is pounding on Ultimo on the mat as we come in, but Ultimo turns it over and pulls Virus to his feet. Much to his discredit, he doesn't do anything to follow up, just standing as Virus clotheslines him, but doesn't go down. Virus yells, tries again, no. Ultimo has no problem clotheslining Virus down on his third charge. Corner whip, corner clothesline, corner whip, corner knee but Virus ducks down and Ultimo goes out - and into the camera! He clipped it with his leg on the way down, making for a fun camera angle. Emilio is in and clothesline Virus through the ropes, while the announcers are busy making jokes about the camera destruction. Sagrado in on Emilio, whip, drop down so Panther can use a tilt-a-whirl back breaker. Double dropkick to knock Emilio out, both off the ropes, Rey stops Panther with a kick to the back, but Sagrado is free to tope Emilio anyway. Back in the ring, Panther is giving Rey a sunset flip - no, Kiwi Roll! Now holding on for a cover, but we don't see the account - instead, we watch Ultimo and Virus back in. Virus runs, Ultimo tosses and low blows him on the way down. The refs easily see that, and it's over. (1:25) This was nothing except Panther really is a tecnico now.

Replays, mostly of the camera destruction. Didn't seem to break it, but a big boot to the top of it can't be good. Ultimo actually goes after Virus pos t match some, but we're more interested in the camera hitting replays.

2 Mexican Trios Tournament Semifinal [2]
Zumbido (c?), Super Crazy, Alan Stone vs Infernales (Averno, Mephisto, Satanico (c))
11/28/03, Arena Mexico
63
trios 3:55 Alan bodyscissors rollup Satanico Infernales were off, and I don't mean the finish.

Notes: Second half of the tournament that was started last week. We skipped both team's first round match, and start up with the Infernales in the ring and rudos rushing it even as the tecnicos from last match are rolling out. Alan is the Stone brother with long hair.

Infernales manage to hold the ring spite the charge, taking them down and throwing Super Crazy out. Blue Panther and Tigre Blanco are just now leaving. Lots of grabbing hand holding into the ropes. Alan and Crazy (again) are out of the ring - sounds like Crazy is taking time to talk to the announcers. Double whip for Zumbido, spinebuster by Satanico, Zumbido rolled to his feet, whip, double flapjack. Satanico holds Zumbido into position, double dropkick by the others. Crazy back in but quickly stopped by the three. Corner whip to Averno, who backdrops Crazy out, Crazy lands on the apron, Crazy's right is locked, Averno's is not. Averno holds Crazy on the apron, while Mep runs and Satanico boosts him up for a high dropkick to knock Crazy to the floor. Alan comes but is caught before he even gets a moved in. Double whip, Averno spinebuster, and an elbow drop. Satanico whips Alan into a double hiptoss near the ropes - which must've not been what they've wanted, as Averno and Mephisto start kicking Alan on the mat. Crowd chanting for Zumbido but Alan's getting held for more kicks. Crazy in but stomped as soon as he does. Zumbido's looking for a way to get in and attack. Alan rolls in but Averno stomps him. Zumbido thinks everyone is sufficiently distracted for him to get involved, but he gets kicked by Mephisto. Infernales try a triple bulldog, but they al get shoved off. Tecnicos start the comeback brawl around the ring. The tecnico/rudo structure is going opposite of what I'd thought it would. Mephisto and Zumbido are left in the ring, Zumbido off the ropes, tossed up by Mep, down with a 'rana one two NO. Zumbido with a shoulderblock, (both) off the ropes, Zumbido's springboard crossbody is met with a dropkick. Mephisto is pumped. He charges Zumbido and takes a backdrop all the way to the floor. Crazy over to the apron quick - TOP ROPE ASAI MOONSAULT! That was nice. Zumbido still in the ring, missing a cross body on Averno. Averno with a shoulderblock, running to the ropes, uh I guess he was going to do the tope con giro but something went wrong and he grabbed the ropes on the way out, looking like he through himself out of the ring for no reason. And all while the announcers were getting ready to hype the dive. Super Crazy tries to cover by going after Averno, and Mephisto is after them. Now that they're all ready, Zumbido can try his dive - the double jump plancha goes ends up hitting only Crazy, the Infernales moving on the way and Satanico perhaps having messed up his timing by shaking the middle rope as Zumbido was jumping off it. It's Alan Stone left vs the Infernales for the moment, and Satanico is beating the heck out of him with chops. The other two are back in to help, Satanico directing traffic, double whip, double back elbow. Triple faceslam set up - but Satanico's new protégés act a lot like his old ones, walking away to celebrate before the move is hit, and not noticing that Alan has reversed it into a bodyscissors roll up - one two THREE! (3:55) Alan Stone beating Satanico is a pretty huge upset - and Zumbido gives him a ride around the ring. Meanwhile, the Infernales are having a very emotional and bordering around on physical discussion about who's fault that just was. Averno and Satanico exchange shoves? Mephisto has to keep them separated. Replays - Infernales had this one won when the dive went wrong, but the Infernales overconfidence coast them.

Vignette: Well, sorta. Mascara Magica and Terrible have hit the ring to talk about something. Mascara Magica extends an invitation to join the Guapos to...Big Brother's Omar, as he rips off his jacket to reveal a shirt with Omar's face on it. Terrible asks for us to vote him. This is too funny for all the wrong reasons.

Stellar Moments
Lo Impresionante:
Ramstein holds Neutron upside down for Sangre Azteca to add a dropkick ot the head.
Lo Doloroso: Violencia's apron somersault plancha to nowhere
El Triunfo: Virus beats Rocky Romero for the Super Light Title

Vignette: Pierroth gets time to talk! I know you were worried. I think Pierroth hatches a "hey, I need more people AND Perro Jr. hates Universo like I do" plan here, but maybe that's just because I want to believe someone thought of that. He also seems worried about no Silva today. In the process, we give away someone's phone number (01-900-84-99-810) - HEY! That's OMAR'S NUMBER! Pierroth disputes that Omar can really be of help in this situation.

3 Hijo del Perro Aguayo (c), Pierroth, Tarzan Boy vs Atlantis (c), Mr. Niebla, Brazo de Oro
11/28/03, Arena Mexico
70
1 trios 0:46
1:13
Pierroth half crab/armbar
Tarzan second rope legdrop Niebla
clipped to heck, wasn't very good to begin with. Fall 2 seemed longer than that.
2 4:16 Atlantida on Perro
3 2:30 Perro top rope double stomp Atlantis
T 7:59 Rudos (2-1)

Notes: Pierroth gets time to talk! I know you were worried. Perro still fins his fans to slap hands with but then gives Pierroth a high five, so I don't know what's going on. He still gets booed. Wait, Tarzan Boy is teaming with the guy who keeps killing his buddy Rey? I'm getting the impression Tarzan makes questionable decisions! This has the promise of not being very good. Atlantis gets first entrance? So Perro can waste no time in picking up from last week. Wow, Brazo de Oro was going to get last entrance of all people. Tarzan still hates Brazos.

Beatdown to start. Tarzan does his best Hogan legdrop. Lots of crowd shots as people appear and disappear in the ring, which I guess is fine in this match. Tarzan does the Hogan cupped ear pose! BdO gives up to half crab with armbar (which narrows it down, right? :46) and takes his time letting go. We almost miss Tarzan's pin on Niebla (1:13) After Perro is tired of beating Atlantis out of the ring, he's brought in so Pierroth can hold and Perro can hit him some more. Running stomp! Oh he's dead now. They keep on going after a break to raise hands, with Niebla getting posted and Perro beating up Atlantis outside some more.

Beatdown goes on through the start of the second fall. Perro ripped at Atlantis' mask somewhere in there. Nazi supplies the belt be cause we had to get it in, and Niebla shortly after ducks a double clothesline to turn the tide. Yep, Pierroth gets the belt back. Perro goes horizontal after being through into the post. Atlantis even slams him on the floor. Niebla giving Pierroth a lot of elbows to the head, while Oro uses a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Tarzan. Niebla chokes out Pierroth with the belt for a while, which seems worthy of a DQ. More belt shots. Atlantis wants to belt Perro, but he takes off. Comeback still on after a minute, with Atlantis beating Perro up on the stage. Oh no they held Pierroth for the handspring back elbow. Perro finally gets in a move for the rudos by dropkicking Atlantis out, and Tarzan is able to use the distraction to take care of the others. Tarzan holds Niebla for Perro to dropkick, and that goes wrong, naturally. Perro manages to slide under the back elbow. Slam, up top, but Niebla rolls out of the way of the double stomp. Atlantis in and Perro feels Atlántida (4:16) as Oro gives Tarzan the scorpion/w/armlock to finish him off (4:20). This fall went too long for not being the final fall. The fighting again continues after the fall, with Niebla beating up Perro and Atlantis and Perro fighting on the floor.

Everyone goes to their corners for the firs time to start fall 3. Pierroth and Oro start, but we get plenty of crowd shots and it's soon Aguayo vs Atlantis, with Atlantis firmly in charge. When they head outside, Perro takes control, but this week it's him who takes the ride into the seats. This degenerates back into a free for all, with Niebla trying a dive but Tarzan shoving him off, then Tarzan almost going over Niebla on a top con giro. Pierroth and Aguayo team up on Atlantis, Pierroth slams Atlantis so Aguayo can hit the double stomp, then Pierroth wasting no time getting the cover himself. Perro helps cove one two three. (2:30) Pierroth gets time to talk! I know you were worried. He's invincible. He's not going to lose his hair. Is Tarzan Boy limping? Never good. Aguayo challenges Atlantis to a hair/mask match and even the announcers sound skeptical of that one. Oooh, he ripped off the top of the mask.

Replays, and out.

Rating: Bases on the quality of the finish, ring work, internal/external storyline, consistency and my whims. Also, various other (random) factors that I can't think of right now. 0-100 for matches.

Breakdowns: 3 Matches (13:19) about 24.2% of showtime (55:00)

Average Match Rating 63
Overall Match Rating: 2
3 Trios
2 Tecnico over Rudo wins, 1 Rudo over Tecnico wins
Turns: Averno and Satanico aren't seeing eye to eye
Show Assessment: Nothing horrid, nothing great.

Closing Notes:

1. Funny show to build up the big one next week - only one (Pierroth) of their the four people in the their top matches show.
2. On the other hand, I didn't really want another Capos/Pierroth match.
3. But Aguayo/Atlantis was the strongest built match on the show. And it's the one the happened last week.
4. OMAR! I have no idea who you are but I feel closer to you than ever.
