CMLL Line - 01/10/04 (#110)

Chronology: On the first run via Galavision, this episode was aired out of order - they skipped #109. Nothing (apparently - I haven't see it when I'm writing this, but I can't think of anything looking at the lineup and remembering results) storyline worth of note, except that the main event is a rematch from that week.

1 Blue Panther vs Mr. Niebla
10/14/03, Arena Coliseo
30
3 mano y mano 1:04 Niebla small package Panther just a couple spots. Not really worth a rating.
T Niebla (2-1)

Notes: This is not for the CMLL Heavyweight Title, but should've been! JIP.

Blue Panther is down and Niebla is going up as we come in. Panther struggles to his feet as Niebla drops him back down via the missile dropkick. (Niebla took fall one, Panther took fall two). Niebla thinks about going up again for the moonsault but the crowd seems mixed on the idea. Niebla climbs out to the apron instead - is he waiting for Panther to get up? No, he's still polling the audience. This is taking far too long to work, though Panther is still in the process of getting up. Top rope - was that a dropkick or 'rana? Whatever it is, it didn't get close to Panther. Panther was going to catch the legs for something, but only got a hold of them after Niebla landed and decided to pass on whatever spot he wanted. Waving to the crowd. Looks like they had a mask ripping session. Wait, are we supposed to think that Panther powerbombed Niebla there? Because Niebla powerbombed himself if anything - Panther's pretty happy with himself at any rate. Referee checks Niebla, finds a limp arm, and starts counting the pin even though Panther is five feet away taunting the fans (so it's a pin with no one covering) one two KICKOUT. Okay. Banner in the audience reminds us that Panther's just hit his 25th year of being a cool mat based rudo. Panther tries a spinning toe hold, but Niebla reverses it into a figure four one two three. (1:04) I really got to go back to not doing these. Post match, Niebla challenged Panther to a mask/mask, but we don't get to hear it - which is fine, since it has as good a chance of happening in the near future as me having a mask/mask match with Blue Panther.

Vignette: Bestia, who seems to have a sore throat and a desire to get back in to his (locked?) car, talks to Emilio in the parking lot about the match. Bestia wonders where Scorpio is - he'd rather be teaming with him than the Capos. As they walk away, it seems that Bestia's dropped his car keys on the ground - gonna have a tough time getting in now.

2 Capos (Apolo, Universo (c)) & Talibanes (Emilio, Bestia) vs Giant Silva (c), Rayo Jalisco Jr., el Hijo de Lizmark
10/17/03, Arena Mexico
50
1 4 v 3 5:45 Universo DQ (low blow uppercut) A Silva comedy match. An angle, but still no.

Notes: Lizmark, Emilio, and even the Capos are redeemable at times but pass on doing full play by play. The ring announcer says Universo hospitalized Perro Jr.? Okay. I think Emilio forgets which gimmick he's doing and just decides to goof off as he gets to the ring. Lizmark always gets last entrance.

Comedy match, which you'd expect from this lineup. Silva is strong. Apolo and Silva still have continuing dislike. There's a phone number for a boxer guy - is he on Mexican Big Brother? I guess. They want you to vote for him? Eh. Capos get an advantage on Rayo, but don't let the Taliban help out. Apolo keeps telling Emilio and Bestia to go away. Lizmark semi-escapes the double team, but the Capos are still not wanting to have anything to do with Bestia and Emilio. They don't even get to follow up. Silva in. Now the Taliban can come in, says the Capos. Taliban doesn't like the idea, but Bestia tries. And dies. Capos aren't even helping? That's kinda mean of them. Bestia and Emilio are slammed and both splashed, but Universo does break up the pin. SILVA SUNSET FLIP. Apolo has to make the save for his masked friend. Silva and Apolo's eyes meet, and that's basically the end of Apolo. Silva tries to finish this once and for all with a powerbomb, but Universo blatantly low blow uppercuts him, and that's that. (5:45) The end of the match does not stop the kicking and such. Silva's sure getting low blowed a lot this time in. Silva gets stomped out of the ring, and the tecnicos could do a better job of helping him. Before I can make too much of that, the Taliban has decided to beat up the Capos. Se what happens when you don't share a beatdown on Lizmark? Tenicos are leaving, while the fight in the ring is pretty even. Eh, check that - there's Scorpio Jr. The 3 on 2 goes to 3. Is Mascara here? Is Caras here? Apparently not. Apolo and Universo are left laying, mostly due to kicks and chops. Replays, while the Taliban might have made an attempt to get a microphone - you could hear someone talking for a moment and then it ended.

Stellar Moments
Lo Admirable: Porky gives the Bronco Buster to Black Warrior, Bestia and Scorpio at once
El Tope: Warrior kills one of the Brazos (de Oro, i think, though we don't get to see much of him except Warrior colliding with him) with the Tope Of Death
Lo Espectacular: Rocky Romero ducks a clothesline and flattens Super Crazy with a slingshot somersault tope.
Lo Doloroso: Negro stomps Mascara Ano hard and picks him up in a headlock. Mascara responds by DROPPING CASAS ON HIS HEAD with a back suplex. Casas takes one of these scary incredible neck bumps ever so often, and this fit that bill. I don't know that was on purpose - Mascara released on the suplex, which is unusual. Everyone (but Mascara, who didn't see the impact) looks a bit worried and we clip ahead to him being helped out of the ring. We see the reverse angle - he came right down on shi neck.
La Plancha: At some other time in the match (I hope after, because Negro's moving around fine) Silva second rope splashes the Junior Infernales.

Vignette: Halloween is sick of waiting for Damien, so he's calling home and talking to his son. He's singing to his son as Damien sneaks up to scare the crap out of Halloween - he jumps in his seat. Are they ready for the Super Libre match with the Guapos? That is there style. Also, swearing. There's a whole conversation about Pandas that go over my head. Damien has an introspective moment about his muscular physique. I think.

In the usual hype pre-match bit (which I always skip), I think Dr. Alfonso Morales is putting over the important of Tijuana wrestling when he drops Rey Mysterio Jr's name. Rey Mysterio, Halloween and Damien are also mentioned. Nicho? NICHO WHO. He must've really cheesed them.

3 Super Libre
FdT (Damien (c), Halloween) & Rey Bucanero vs Guapos (Shocker (c), Mascara Magica, Terrible)
10/17/03, Arena Mexico
84
1 trios 2:20 Rey rolling senton Shocker perfectly acceptable trios main event of the week, though wasn't great enough to be especially memorable.
2 2:51 Terrible Octopus Halloween
Shocker front facelock choke Damien
3 4:11 Shocker hammerlock/arm/legscissors Damien
T 9:22 Guapos (2-1)

Notes: Super Libre: No DQ. Basically.

Belt count: NONE! Cane count: NONE! Who are these two? Helpfully, they have insignias on their shirts to let me know who they are. You can say whatever you want about their unhealthy desire for imitating things DX (and Kilq)-ish, but FdT are really on the ball as far as wearing their merchandise to the ring to help sell it; no one else does it. Rey's valet has a skull and crossbones flag! Puffy shirt: black. Guapos are wearing a shirt with someone's face on it? Is it the guy they wanted us to vote for in Big Brother? They take them off before we get to the ring, so I dunno. Guapos have opted for black and white zebra tights. Fight is on as soon as the Guapos step foot in the ring. The highlight of this show so far is the ring announcer retreating to a corner, Rey punching Shocker, and Shocker sandwiching the ring announcer in the corner while he's getting beat. The ring announcer made it out alive, barely.

Rudos are of course in control. Halloween pulls out the corner back elbow, back elbow, crotch chop, back elbow combination. Superkick too. Double low blow legdrop isn't called a DQ. Because it's no DQ? Because it's always not called. Who can say. Shocker and Rey mix it up the most most, while the other four intermingle. Eventually, the rudos group on Magica, but we spend a lot of time watching Shocker recover. Some  tag team spots that we see parts of, because they're cutting elsewhere - best of the bunch is Damien setting up Magica for a face first powerbomb, but Rey finishing it by somersaulting over his partner into a Stunner on Magica. Everyone pose. Terrible tries his luck. Double whip for him, double clothesline is ducked but Rey and Halloween double flapjack him into a Damien Diamond Cutter anyway - that's 4.5 D! Huddle dance around Terrible leading to a triple dropkick to his head, nice.  Shocker tries to catch the by surprise and it works well - Halloween gets locked with a boot, right hand for Rey, but it falls apart when the clothesline on Damien misses. Damien with a takedown into the giant swing, with Halloween connecting on the dropkick to the head. Halloween holds Shocker in place, and Rey hits the Rolling Senton. Halloween and Damien cover while Rey does his taunt one two three. (2:20) Rudos want to pull Shocker apart, but we look at the crowd for a while instead. Replays too.

Rudos still in control to start the second fall. I typed that before it even started. Lots of brawling at ringside, but Rey brings Shocker back in before we can even think about a twenty count. All three rudos in with him, though they're taking turns striking him and in no real hurry. Double corner whip, Rey's whipped at Shocker, Shocker moves, and this Guapo come back is brought to you by "VOTE FOR THIS GUY ON BIG BROTHER." He looks like a boxer (because he's wearing boxing gloves! I'm smart). Shocker uses a double clothesline, and Magica and Terrible do spears of varying level of quality. Big boots for Rey and Halloween (Damien kinda rolling out instead of taking one from Terrible), triple dive is teased but they roll and strut and dance instead. Rudos regroup with the huddle dance. And now we have a normal match. Probably not a great sign for the tecnicos that they didn't win the fall on the comeback. At any rate, Halloween and Magica will restart this. Halloween off the ropes, ducks a clothesline, grabs the ropes, pulls himself out of the ring, and leaves. Now I really think this is going two falls - they couldn't end this match without getting in the obligatory "FdT teases walking out, reconsiders" spot. It's done now - Halloween's coming back - so they don't have to save it for in between falls. Shove for Magica. Show for Halloween. Halloween spits, but Magica ducks. Magica checks behind him - ah, the spit got Terrible instead. He wants in, and he's not so happy. Halloween begs off, but he's still going with a boot to the chest. Corner splash, but Terrible moves. Double chops a plenty, and a slap to the face. And another. Damien gets in a shot from outside. Corner whip, reversed, Halloween gets the boot up, Terrible catches it and throws it down, Halloween tries a clothesline out, Terrible catches it and turns it into a Russian Legsweep. Octopus on him. Meanwhile, Rey and Shocker wander in - Rey open hand slaps Shocker, but then charges him and takes the Monkey Flip Of Death (to the floor.) Magica smashes into Rey with a tope, knocking Rey hard into the second row! Shocker's managed to get a front facelock choke on Damien, and we'll call the double tap out there. (2:51) So it will go three. Guapos celebrate at the corners. Are there boos for the Guapos? Sounds like some mixed in there - not nearly as much as Aguayo was getting, though. Replay of the tope (Magica almost goes over Rey's head, that's new) and of the finish on Damien - looks like Damien tried for a double leg, but Shocker blocked and put the hold on.

Third fall. The people who were booing are Rey Bucanero fans - that's what happened with some of the Perro boos, too. Rey wants Shocker to get this started, even though Magica's in. Shocker's cool with it. Announcers do mention that the public is a little divided here. Open hand slap battle, Shocker blinks first to go off the ropes, clothesline is ducked, Rey spins Shocker out with a shoulderblock. Forearm taunt. Corner whip, reversed, Shocker charges, Rey grabs him and (tires to) put him on the top rope. Takes an extra moment to get it settled, Rey's slap is blocked by Shocker's foot, Shocker turns Rey around with a kick to the face and flattens him with a second rope bulldog. Rey back up, but his clothesline is caught and Shocker kicks him down with a big boot. Damien tries his luck, charging in with a boot, off the ropes, dropkick but no one's home and Damien gets caught up in the ropes. Damien gets untangled only to take a big boot. Right hand for Halloween is ducked, and Halloween hooks him for Damien to hit, but Shocker boots Damien on the charge, and escapes the full nelson to give Halloween a Stunner. Halloween collapses in the corner while his partner charges Shocker, and Damien takes a drop toe hold into Halloween's crotch. Halloween complains about a foul, but he can't get the referees to care. Shocker does a handspring taunt and does a bicep pose in front of Damien. Damien just gives him this look, so Shocker turns around to show Damien his bicep, and then socks Damien with it. Big slap to the face. Shocker lets Magica get a shot. Him versus Rey. Rey wants a handshake? Guess not any more. Open hand slap battle, Rey goes to a forearm, and Magica responds with an armdrag. Rey off the ropes, under, and into a monkey flip. Rey tries a whip, reversed, Magica with a spinebuster and the legdrop on the leg. Damien surprises Magica with a clothesline, but stops to taunt. Off the ropes, boot is caught, Magica spins him around and clotheslined. Legdrop on the leg for him too! Halloween in - no, wait, Halloween has hilariously tangled himself into the middle rope on his way in. Halloween frees himself before angrily kicking the middle rope, perhaps getting Damien in the process. Shove for Magica, and Magica shoves Halloween down. Halloween - will walk out. He's offered a drink from a front row fan and takes it! Halloween decides he's no fool and stays out. Terrible's turn. Open hand slap battle with Damien. (Hey, it's Damien vs Damien!) Damien cuts corner with a kick and grabs Terrible by the hair, but Terrible powers out and kicks him away. Damien knocked in the corner, Terrible charges and misses another corner splash, taking himself all the way to the floor in the process. Crowd shot, then, Terrible is flattened by a Damien tope. Everyone looks for a chance to dive next, but Magica's up first -  apron dive 'rana on Damien. Halloween starts to run, but Shocker surprises him with a clothesline. Shocker's too busy celebrating to see Rey run, then walk, then slingshot somersault plancha his way onto Magica. Shocker starts running for his own dive, but Halloween repays the favor by grabbing him. Low blow kick is apparently legal in this rule set. Shocker's lifted up - F5? Shocker escapes on his feet, his clothesline misses, Halloween's second low blow kick is caught and spun, Shocker lifts Halloween up in a Fireman's Carry, Shocker F5? No, Damien escapes on the spin into a reverse DDT. Halloween is pumped. Off the ropes, no, Shocker grabs him, there's the hammerlock/arm/leg scissors cradle he used to beat Tarzan one two three (4:11) Captain pins captain, and that's it. I need a better name for that move. Perhaps an accurate one?

Next Week: Atlantis, Hijo de Lizmark, Halloween, Mr. Niebla, Rey Bucanero, Mascara Magica, Ultimo Guerrero, Tarzan Boy (returning) and much much more.

Back at ringside, we have replays. And people standing around. And I wonder what Rey was going to do the Magica when he did that apron dive. Guapos slaps hands and sign autographs and that's it. Guapos want to come back in the ring to pose some more but the guy is already in to take care of the ring ropes. That's it.

Rating: Bases on the quality of the finish, ring work, internal/external storyline, consistency and my whims. Also, various other (random) factors that I can't think of right now. 0-100 for matches.

Breakdowns: 3 Matches (18:11) about 30.3% of showtime (60:00)
Average Match Rating 54.6
Overall Show Rating: 2
1 Trios, 1 4 v 3, 1 Singles
3 Tecnico over Rudo wins
Turns: Guapos and Taliban don't seem to be friends anymore.
Show Assessment: Main event was good, but the rest was ugh.

Closing Notes:

1. So Blue Panther is still a rudo at this show, hmm.
2. Taliban turn is just to give new partners for Pierroth, and more matches for me to ignore.
3. I'm surprised they didn't do weapons or the cane if this was going to be no DQ. The low blow wasn't even that big.
4. A clean sweep for the forces of good this week! That never happens.
