Trios Trios Trios Part 1

A new project of sorts. With no access to new CMLL shows and not much newsworthy going on in the world of Lucha, I don’t have a lot to post about. But I found an old tape from Wrestleholics Videos called “Trios Trios Trios” that I ordered years ago before I even got to see CMLL on Galavision back in 2001. It features, duh, trios matches from CMLL from around 98-99, and I honestly forgot I even had it. So I figured I’d make my way through it one match at a time, have a look back at who was around and how (or if) anyone’s changed.

Match uno:

Mr. Aguila [c] & Blue Blazer & Mr. Niebla vs. Ultimo Guerrero [c] & Rey Buccanero & Gladiador (from 11/28/98)

Let’s break it down:

Mr. Aguila (Still has his mask)
Blue Blazer (No, not that Blue Blazer. It’s actually Phil Lafon (of the Lafon/Doug Furnas team of WWF/ECW fame) under a mask)
Mr. Niebla (Nothing different here, although he’s wearing a hideous yellow outfit)
Ultimo Guerrero (Still the same, maybe a little heavier)
Rey Buccanero (Still has his goofy pirate mask)
Gladiador (So, not the one from the 50’s. I think it’s Hijo del Gladiador who lost his mask in 2000. He’s a stocky wrestler, kinda looks like Dr. Wagner)

Primera Caida: Aguila & Guerrero seem to have the issue, because Ultimo jumps him at the bell and they spend a few minutes brawling. Furnas tags in and he actually does a heck of a job working with Gladiador and Bucky. Buccanero takes his usual knee destroying bump to the floor. Ultimo says “no way you’re out bumping me” as he takes a hideous Jerry bump to the floor. Aguila follows up with this awesome somersault senton over the corner post to the floor. Back in the ring, Blazer dumps Rey on his head with a decidedly un-lucha Cobra Clutch suplex for a three count, and Niebla follows up with the Nelbina on Gladiador for the first fall.

Segunda Caida: Niebla works a fun sequence with Rey and Gladiador (including a spot where he catches Rey’s kick and spins him so he kicks his partner in the gut). Ultimo and Aguila work a sequence. Ultimo tries for a slingshot inverted suplex, but Aguila lands on his feet, so Ultimo just clotheslines him. OK then. Rudo beatdown is soon on. Ultimo places Aguila on the top turnbuckle, then runs up the ropes and gives him a hideous DDT (Aguila landed like a brainbuster). Amazingly, tecnicos make a comeback, and Aguila dodges a corner charge and hits a freaked out sunset flip for the win.

Man, this was restaurant quality lucha. Could’ve used a third caida, but hell, what we got was pretty great and everyone was bumping like maniacs. Good start to the tape.

One thought to “Trios Trios Trios Part 1”

  1. Interesting look back. That match was part of the build for the soon to be Ultimo vs Aguila mask match where Aguila was being punished for whoring himself out as Papito Chulo. Black Warrior was originally supposed to be in the match but Gladiador took his place after Warrior was moved up in the card when both Villanos got thrown off the second floor at Arena Mexico by Negro Casas. Legit. Doesn’t sound like an EMLL angle, does it?:)
