CMLL Line - 10/18/03 (#98)

Vignette: Black screen, with his name in fire - Satanico reminds Ultimo Guerrero that he's the teacher, and Ultimo is all he is because of him. Ultimo may be good, but Satanico is el Diablo.

Vignette: Black screen, with his name in fire - Ultimo Guerrero says that Satanico may have been his teacher, good for him. But now, Ultimo has surpassed him in the ring, with power Satanico can't even imagine. Or maybe I'm just guessing.

1 Satanico vs Ultimo Guerrero
07/25/03, Arena Mexico
71
3 trios 5:10 Satanico small package pretty acceptable for one fall, though they were really moving slow

Notes: JIP -third fall, right as the whistle blows. Satanico won the first, Ultimo the second.

Ultimo charges Satanico, with a shoulder to the midsection. Backing up, charging up, and missing Satanico as he steps out of the corner - inside cradle one two NO. Satanico pounds the mat, because he thought he had the match here. Both men  are slow up - they're exhausted from the first two falls, it seems. Open hand slap battle breaks out, Ultimo managing to stay even after five flurries, then going to the knife edge chops to pause Satanico and take him down to his knees. Corner whip for Satanico, charge in and Satanico gets the boot out. Satanico charges out, reverse bulldog clothesline! And another - now a cover, one two NO. Satanico double checks the count. Both are down, Satanico managing to kick Ultimo from his position on the mat. They both struggle to their feet for another open hand slap battle, and this one has Ultimo backing up at every blow Satanico gets to him, till he's forced into the corner. Satanico with punches to Ultimo's left ear. Short choke on the middle rope, then ac corner whip, reversed, Ultimo slowly charges into Satanico's double boots, which allows him to catch them and drop Satanico on the mat. Standing leg push cover by Ultimo one two Satanico kicks him away. Crowd making noise for Satanico as he gets to his feet again. Another open hand slap battle. Ultimo stands in here, so Satanico is he one who goes to other strikes - jab, jab, jab. Satanico pauses to untie Ultimo's mask a little bit before corner whipping Ultimo - Ultimo kips up, but Satanico delays enough to catch the legs and drop Ultimo face first on the mat. Satanico poses, then steps over Ultimo - but Ultimo slides through the camel clutch attempt. Ultimo tries for his own, but Satanico trips him forward and out of the ring. Satanico the apron - SENTON TO THE FLOOR! That took a lot out of both men, and neither are moving at an average speed. Is the crowd chanting "GUERRERO GUERRERO"? I think so! I so missed a turn here. This booking is makes sense but is inconsistent. Another open hand slap battle - Satanico opts just to grab Ultimo's head and ram it into the post, but Ultimo pushes Satanico off into himself. Ultimo tries to follow with a kick, but Satanico moves and the sole of Ultimo's foot hits post. Both break on the outside before going back in - Satanico first, and catching Ultimo with a knee as he comes in. He's determined. And sweaty. Very sweaty. Whip, spinebuster, standing figure four - no, Ultimo is able to push him up. Ultimo yells to the crowd, who are into it more than me. Ultimo charges and jumps at Satanico for a - 'rana that was too low? big DDT? - whatever it was, it wasn't, because Satanico catches him and drops him for another spinebuster. Cover one two NO. Satanico goes to untie Ultimo's mask once again, ignoring the warnings. Whip, clothesline reverse into a backslide one two NO! Ultimo almost had him there. Both are slow up once again. Ultimo manages a kick, powerbomb lift? is escaped by Satanico, but he's not quick following up and we fall into another open hand slap battle. This time, they both appear to go to punches with neither giving an inch. Satanico bum rushes Ultimo towards the ropes, then whips, reverse, Ultimo with the spinebuster, figure four - and when he goes to add a facelock, Satanico pulls Ultimo's mask! I don't know how Baby Richard doesn't immediately notice - he's taking a generous position behind Ultimo, and I guess the idea is that the back of Ultimo's head was sticking out through the mask for the last fall (thanks to Satanico's previous untying) so he's not seeing anything different. That, and Satanico immediately rolls into a small package to cover Ultimo up, one two three. (5:10) Fair bit of cheers there. But boos too. Student may have been better than the teacher, but the teacher still beat the student. Replays of the Satanico's dive, and the mask pull - plenty enough to see Ultimo's face if you haven't before. A view from Baby Richard's angle might be enough to give him the benefit of the doubt (if he wasn't a rudo!)

Vignette: OH YES THE HAVANA BROTHERS GET MORE TALK TIME

All: We're the Havana Brothers!

Rocky: I'm Havana Brother #1, Rocky Romero. [points stage left] Havana Brother #2, Puma Kid. [points stage right] And Havana Brother #3, Rocko Quance. Tonight, is a big night for us. Tonight we're gonna show all the people of - of Mexico that, it doesn't matter how big they are, how big we are, or how small we are, that we can take anybody, and we're the best. Tell 'em Puma

Puma: [eyes wandering throughout] You know, I guess it's no big that we may not be the biggest people, you know, around, but I dare anyone that WE are not the baddest. Why don't you tell them, Rocko

Rocko: Look, it doesn't matter how big your muscles are. What matters how big your heart is., and with that said, we're the biggest in the world.

Rocky: That's right.

[Everyone pose]

That wasn't as exceptional as last time. But this time, we actually get them in a match...

2 Havana Brothers (Rocky Romero (c), Puma Kid, Bobby "Rocko" Quance) vs Virus, Volador Jr. (c), Ricky Marvin
07/18/03, Arena Mexico
90
1 trios 1:28
2:05
Quance Shooting Star Press Marvin
Rocky cross armbreaker Virus
I definetly think this was a keeper worthy match, but there wasn't much in the way psychology or story - best possible tecera, maybe? I am consciously leaving room for them to go up...
2 1:44
1:57
Volador springboard guillotine legdrop Quance
Virus inverted Indian deathlock surfboard Puma
3 4:03 Rocky cross armbreaker Volador
T 8:05 Rudos (2-1)

Notes: Entrances clipped. For sanity's sake, we're skipping the numbers and calling him "Quance", unless I get really bored and Find/Replace things.

Virus and Quance to start - at least of what we see. Quance is holding the back of his head, so we may have missed a little bit. Quance is quite possibly the first normal sized wrestler to back off of Virus in fear of locking up with him. Okay, he's ready now - ready to get dropkicked. Quance is slow up, but Virus is waiting for him when he gets there. Suplex. Whip, dropkick hits the spot. Bobby rolls out. Virus waits - Rocky eventually comes in. Rocky may want a test of strength, or maybe he just wants to be very open for Virus to kick. Rocky kicks back, Virus kicks but Rocky blocks, mid kick to the side, again, again, whip, reversed, Virus with a backdrop, Rocky holds on for a sunset flip, Virus rolls through and nails the dropkick to the head. Virus covers, one t- no. Virus charges into a hiptoss, Rocky charges into a toss to the apron, Virus off the far ropes and charging, Rocky jumps up, Virus slides under to the floor, Rocky back kicks him and goes for a springboard, Virus trips Rocky into a chindrop on the apron! Ricky and Puma in - Ricky ducks the clothesline and nails Quance with a superkick off the apron. Puma catches Ricky with a jumping heel kick to the head. Forward slam, and going up - second rope pump reverse senton! He was facing out, so he did the normal forward roll, but it was backwards motion compared to how we normally get that move. It looked good but he sure didn't have room to miss. Quance all the way up - Shooting Star Press! One two three! (1:28) Captioning says Ricky's the captain, but we keep fighting - Volador in with a dropkick to Puma, thrust kick for Quance, and a clothesline from Rocky stops him. Double whip, double kick to the knee by Rocky and Puma, double kick to the midsection, Quance off the ropes with a running corkscrew enziguri! Looked like a marital arts special effect. Volador out, and Quance flattens him with a pescado for good measure. Virus is back in the ring, so I can only imagine the captioning lies - he catches a Rocky catch, throws him down, right hand, is blocked, Rocky with a jumping arm scissors into a cross arm breaker! That'll do (2:05) Crowd is quiet but appreciative of the effort. Replay of the SSP.

Marvin and Puma to start the second fall. Puma is hippity hoppity while he circles Marvin. Lockup, headlock by Puma, shot off and back with a shoulderblock. Off the ropes, over with a completely pointless forward flip, so Ricky kills him dead with a superkick! I love when that happens. Ricky with a whip, reversed, kip up and over using the bottom ropes (instead of the turnbuckle) Puma misses a clothesline, Ricky back with a swinging headscissors. Puma is dizzy and out of the ring to the floor, falling on the floor when getting there. Volador in now, and Rocky for the opposition. Volador with a single leg, off the ropes, over, waved by so he does a handspring and a back flip for no reason. Rocky is angered and clotheslines him. Chop. Corner whip, Rocky starts to charge, Virus (in the ring suddenly) backdrops his partner to the apron, Rocky is stunned for a second, then resumes the charge, getting Virus's boots in the exchange. Virus charges out with a clothesline, Rocky ducks that but not Ricky flying in with another headscissors. Ricky running - SLINGSHOT PLANCHA! He grabbed the top rope on the way over, and used it to completely turn around, so his head was toward the ring (and actually, very close to the floor) when he got to Rocky. Got a big "OOOOOOOH." Virus got taken down by Quance off camera, and we come back to see Quance charging - wacky corkscrew kick leads to him being caught by Virus and hung over the top rope - Volador springboard guillotine legdrop! He almost got his neck taken off there. Volador covers, one two three. (1:44) Looks like Virus gave Puma a dropkick to the knee while we ere watching that. Virus with a definite wacky lucha hold - Inverted Indian Deathlock Surfboard, lifting Puma's whole body of the ground while pulling his arms back. More to the side than a Rocking Horse. Puma is done. (1:57) Tecnico celebrates. Baby in the crowd - could care less. They're always a tough critic at 4 months. Replay of Ricky's lance - and apparently, that Virus dropkick to the knee was actually a face first powerbomb. You could see how I could get those two confused. Havana Brothers try to put themselves together for the last fall.

Puma is ticked at Virus. Or the world. Virus is standing closest to him at any rate. Open hand slap battle. Puma forgets what the deal is and chops, then certainly doesn't forgot and nails Virus with a forearm upside the face. Virus takes, it, grabs Puma by the head, and busts him good with three or four good forearms to the cheek. Puma tries a kick to the leg, but Virus' dropkick trumps that. Corner whip, reversed, Virus jumps to the second rope, turns around and springboards to the top rope, and nails Puma with a missile dropkick as he comes in one two NO. Virus with a chop, wave to the crowd, corner whip, charge, Pima slips through the ropes as Virus hits the buckle (neat!), forearm to the face, crazy turning springboard into a big headlock takedown one two Marvin breaks it up a dropkick Marvin rolls out Virus and Puma rolls to the ramp himself. Rocky in, Marvin misses the clothesline, Rocky with a waistlock, German, Marvin lands on his feet, kick is caught by Rocky, Rocky jumps to Marvin's shoulders for Victory Roll, and rolls all the way through into an anklelock! Marvin sells it like hot death on a stick and desperately grabs the middle rope. Rocky gibes him the break, but is quick back on him with a whip, reversed, dropkick but Rocky has the ropes. Rocky waits for him to get back up. Kick to the side, head slaps from both sides, another kick more head slaps. Rocky off the ropes, right hand is ducked by Marvin, Marvin with the Flatliner! WHO'S BETTA THAN RICKY? (Zumbido) Magadan is having trouble keeping "Ricky Marvin", "Rocky Romero", "Rocko Quance" and (not present) "Ricky Reyes" straight. Both guys roll out for switches, and Quance and Volador don't budge on clothesline for each other. Quance off the ropes, sliding under, off the ropes again, bodyscissors DDT by Quance one two NO! Quance waits for Volador to begin getting up, off the ropes, Volador with a quick powerslam one two no. Volador with a whip, reversed, Volador with a sunset flip, Quance fights it and punches his way free, off the ropes, Virus and Marvin nail him with a double clothesline. Marvin overshoots Rocky on the superkick, but brings his leg back to sweep him off the apron as Virus forearms Puma to the floor. Quance stuck in with all three tecnicos now - whip by Marvin, Volador drops down, Virus catches him and drops him with a forward fireman's carry. Volador off the ropes, over, Quance, Marvin boots him to the top rope - top rope Quebrada! One two "Ricky" breaks it up, because now the Doctor is confused too! You get Volador and Virus are kicked out of the ring, and Puma and Rocky double whip Ricky. Puma and Quance's double clothesline is ducked under, and Marvin back with a double handspring elbow. Rocky charges and takes the leg trip onto the middle rope. Marvin wastes no time hitting the spot - [YOUR AREA CODE HERE]! Puma stops it from going father with a high swinging kick for Ricky. Crowd shot. Puma is working Virus over on the ropes, more forearms, and a chop. Whip, reversed, Virus with a spinebuster, picking Puma's head up, off the ropes, dropkick to the head! Quance back in - jumping side kick is ducked by Virus, but Quance hits another one the to back of Virus' head! Volador springboard dropkick! Rocky back in but he's clotheslined immediately. Volador signaling something to the crowd. Waistlock is blocked, Rocky with a switch, Volador elbows out, to the ropes, Rocky with a 'rana (Just getting high enough for Volador to go through) into the cross armbreaker - Volador fights it - Volador gives! (4:03) Everyone stops fighting, so I guess Volador is the captain. Crowd gives this match a lot of applause. They were dead quite when this all started, but this match got them into it. Replay of the finish. Replay of me taking a breath. This feud has potential, yes. Volador is still down selling the devastating effects of ode Red, with the doctor coming into check on to him till he can stand up.

Spectacular Moments
El Lance
- Brazo De Plata Jr. and Brazo de Oro Jr. (neither really fat - white outfits with masks) flatten Super Commando and Mesela (Roman solider gimmick) with through the ropes stereo topes.
El Rudo - Tigre Blanco does his "roll over the top rope into a headscissors on the outside" move, but Dr. X just drops him face first when he goes for the headscissors. Looked not fun, although it could've been rose.
Lo Especatcular -  You know that wacky second rope pump reverse somersault senton by Puma I just told you about? That and the SSP.
Lo Dolorso - Violencia commits suicide with an apron dive somersault senton to nowhere.
La Llave - Ultimo beats Satanico last week with the Gory Special

Vignette: Emilio and Scorpio discuss whatever it is they discuss. They're not big fans of Terrible or FdT, but they're more interested in killing Terrible first, since they've got that big match on 08/01. This camera man is especially sea sick. Or making me that way.

3 Talibanes (Bestia Salvaje, Scorpio Jr., Emilio Charles Jr. (c)) vs FdT (Halloween, Damien 666 (c)), Terrible
07/25/03, Arena Mexico
70
1 trios 2:13 Scorpio half crab Damien just a brawl set up for next week. Not up to the level of the previous matches.
2 1:44 Halloween Boston Crab Emilio
Damien Camel Clutch Scorpio
3 2:57 Bestia DQ (low blow Terrible)
T 6:54 FdT (2-1)

Notes: Belt count for FdT - 4. So the guys wearing the CMLL shirts are tecnicos here? I guess. At least this is sort of continuity from when Terrible helped Damien and Halloween for no good reason last time we saw them.

Brawl to start, which is good because I can blow them off and take a break. Halloween's hair is green. I state that with no more reason than the idea of the hair itself, I think. Typical rudo beatdown fall, with each side getting a shot. Halloween takes the chest first ride to the floor, take a drink. You know, I bet FdT is losing and that's why Damien's captain. Triple dropkick to his head should do it if they want to, but Terrible is black in to brawl more when it doesn't appear he's supposed to be - eh, Scorpio ignores it, puts a half crab on Damien, and takes the fall. (2:13)

Brawl goes on for a second fall. I'm betting on the thirty second comeback bit here. Seriously, though - Terrible's the one who's really in the feud against these three, and Halloween is the dominant personality on the team. There has to be something up for Mr. 666 to be captain. Terrible starts the comeback by ducking under a double clothesline and getting Bestia with one, about 1:10 into the fall. Terrible does hit a nice tope on Bestia - they do seem to be associating those two there. Damien and Halloween get to do some of their team stuff here, and eventually trip Emilio and Scorpio into an interesting predicament - Halloween has Emilio in a Boston Crab, and Damien has Scorpio in a Camel Clutch, and Emilio's face is in Scorpio's butt. That's a submission for many reasons. (1:44) Taliban regroup on the outside.

Third fall starts with everyone still scatted, but eventually getting to the apron. Damien and Scorpio work the first sequence, Damien getting the better and teasing a dive before Emilio boots him. Halloween and Emilio next, featuring Halloween no selling Emilio's punches and ripping of his shirt. Halloween no sold chops, a running clothesline, a running clothesline, a slap, missed his own clothesline but hits the spear. Scorpio then came in and knocked Halloween down with just one clothesline. Halloween eventually got the better of him with a superkick. Bestia in and slapping, one to the face knocks the gum out of his mouth. Terrible in to take on Bestia, and pumped. Chest slaps didn't work as well as the ones to the head, and Terrible was knocked down to his knees. Bestia kicked him in the chest three times, but paused to taunt and got clotheslined for it. Corner whip. Terrible charge in with a splash but no one's home. Damien in, Bestia dropkicked out. Scorpio chopping Damien, whip, reversed, Damien kicks Scorpio out of the ring. DAMIEN TOPE! Scorpio flew backwards and took out the front row of seats. Emilio got in the ring, got pumped thinking of toping Damien, then turned around to find Halloween waiting for him. Clothesline ducked, Emilio cross body caught, Halloween lifts him up this shoulders, F5!  Bestia and Terrible back in, knocking their other opposition out. Terrible strikes first and nails a big boot. Maniacal yell, off the ropes, high boot caught, and Bestia kicks low. Both the refs were standing right there, so that's not gonna work, and this match is over. (2:57) Terrible may have a point, because that didn't look much like a low blow. Taliban react like you think they might - stompdown on Terrible. Hey, it's Shocker and Mascara Magica! Crowd collectively shrieks. 2 our 3 works, though shirts get ripped in the process.

Shocker gets the microphone and talks up the 08/01 match. It's the Guapos vs the Taliban, cage match, last man to escape loses his hair. Although Shocker would be okay with doing it now. FdT are like "Are we still in this scene, or can we go?" Actually, they do seem a little upset, but not enough not to do their pose on the way out. Emilio's talking - one assumes he doesn't ant this match since he just had the match, and more importantly the people don't want it now. People disagree. Bestia gets the microphone to tell the fans to shut up and have special words of hate for Terrible, one could assume. Not interesting enough words of hate for us to stick with this.

Next Week: Hey! Announced matches!
Guapos vs Talibanes, hair vs hair!
Dr. Wagner/Black Tiger/Universo 2K (c) vs Infernales for the CMLL Trios Titles
Hijo Perro Aguayo/Mr. Niebla/Lizmark Jr. vs Damien 666/Halloween/Super Crazy
(Are they using AAA entrance footage of Aguayo Jr? I'm not sure what else it could be.)

Replays of how that last fall ended and the save  as the two sides continue to yell at each other. That's it.

Rating: Bases on the quality of the finish, ring work, internal/external storyline, consistency and my whims. Also, various other (random) factors that I can't think of right now. 0-100 for matches.

Breakdowns: 3 Matches (20:09) about 32.0% of showtime (63:00);

Overall Match Rating: 3 of 4

Turns: Ultimo a tecnico? Satanico a rudo? Only for today?
Show Assessment: Good show with one really good match

Closing Notes:

1. They gave us the whole show with clips for once! That hasn't happen in quite some time.
2. On one hand, if we're calling Satanico the evilest man in all of Mexico, it is good that he's doing bad.
3. On the other hand, why are they building them as rudos when they'll be tecnicos in the title match next week?
4. I look forward to the Havana/Volador/Marvin/Virus rematches, but only if we keep the names straight.
