CMLL Line - 02/02/03 (#73)

An explanation of this setup is now here.

vignette: Pierroth reads an article about - Veneno? I guess it's an interview in a lucha magazine. Pierroth is helpful enough to hold it up for us to see: "Pierroth, pusiste en riesgo mi carrera y eso lo vas a pagar, te voy a borrar para siempre", which google translates to "Pierroth, you put in risk my race and that you are going it to pay, I am going to you to erase for always". So I guess that's a tecnico turn off camera? Pierroth rants and raves to Violencia. Violencia has heard this particular rant so many times, he's just calmly fixing his vest while Pierroth is talking. Pierroth reaffirms that he's firmly in control and Veneno is just jealous of them. Violencia and Pierroth argue over the meaning of something in the article? They drop Satanico's name? Must be an upcoming opponent. Boricuas will always be the best, I got that out of this. Translated it myself. Siempre, it's siempre. Haha he's still talking but we cut away from him because we're so sick of it.

1 Pierroth (c), Violencia, Blue Panther vs Gran Markus Jr. (c), Apolo Dantes, Satanico
01/28/03, Arena Coliseo
55
1 trios 1:48
2:28
double submission on Satanico
Pierroth DQ (belt choke on Markus)
same match as always.
2 4:49 Markus small package Pierroth
T 4:17 Tecnicos (2-0)

Notes: That vest was worth the work, Violencia! What the heck is Panther doing here? Eh. GRAN MARKUS IS NOT WEARING A SHIRT. He hasn't lost that much weight, let me tell you. This is disturbing. Satanico's a face this week and maybe I just need to give him his own color. Apolo has started to grow his hair back but it's coming in more on the sides of the head than the top.

Rudo beatdown to start. I really shouldn't bother to call anything tell someone pulls out a belt, because they're very WWE like with that in this fued. Wow, that's like the weakest looking Stunner ever by Blue Panther, for being only a set up spot for Violencia's dropkick to the face if nothing else. Satanico tossed, Apolo's turn. He takes a double boot and a knee breaker. It's fun to watch Violencia and Panther do 100 of the work here, while Pierroth does nothing. It takes them about a minute to get organized enough so Pierroth can backdrop Apolo to the floor. Fat man Markus is in.  No, wait, Panther wants to do a tope on Apolo just for being here. Markus and Pierroth are being doing their usual stuff, while the other two rudos would prefer to have a good wrestling match - double submission on Satanico ends him. (1:48) Pierroth sure can backdrop. Ah, he's got he belt off. That's' why Markus is wearing no shirt, so he can get smacked in the back? I guess we're supposed to be appalled by welts but I never get a good view of 'em. Seems stupid of Markus because we all knew it was coming. Now he's doing a belt choke in renege - they're giving him a five count? That's awful generous, seeing as he's trying to kill Markus right now. Pierroth doesn't let go anyway, so that'll be a DQ (2:28)

Break in between falls. We come back with

Vignette: Loco Max says hi. He'd really like you to come out to Arena Coliseo to see him beat someone not-as-Guapo. He does an evil laugh so scary, I think he scares himself. It's GREAT.

Beatdown continues. I sure hope the tecnicos get their comeback in this fall so it can be quickly over. Satanico is battling but we're not getting this till Markus is back in the ring so I'm not too affected. Apolo's turn. The tecnicos are trying to come out passionate and angry and stuff, but I can't get in to it because it's this feud. In a hilarious lack of communication, Panther catches Apolo in a spinebuster lift, Violencia notices and starts the clothesline, but Panther slams Apolo before Violencia is even close. Not exactly stellar teamwork, but Panther's usually got better thing s to do. Apolo gets thrown out and stomped by CGII, which somehow wakes him up because he's all in her face after. Big Fat Markus is in. Apolo gets chopped by and posted by Pierroth to resolve that stand off. Violencia and Satanico are having a strike battle in the ring to try and keep the crowd into it, but that leaves Panther to hold Markus in the ropes for about a minute now. They're just kinda standing there and doing nothing. Satanico is worked out so they can go back - but Satanico grabs Commando Girl II and a referee has to come out to break that up. He (and we) miss the beginning of the tecnico comeback, because all the sudden a double team has gone tragically wrong. Triple pump powerbomb on Violencia takes him out. Triple boot for Panther, then Markus runs him over with a shoulderblock. Pierroth won't come - in fact, he starts running up the aisle, being chased by the tecnicos, and tripping over a cable puller (I think)! Poor guy. Apolo and Markus catch up to him and stomp Pierroth down while the poor bystander pulls himself to safety. Pierroth beating. Apolo has the belt and his using it, but no DQ. Everyone takes turns running into Pierroth in the corner. Violencia manages to pull Pierroth out, but Apolo hits wildly out of control tilt-a-whirl slam on Panther. Satanico takes Panther out of the ring, and Apolo topes him in revenge for earlier. Back in the ring, Violencia has knocked down Markus and is quickly going up - top rope senton misses! Satanico grabs him in an abdominal stretch, but Pierroth saves his partner. Back to Markus and Pierroth - Pierroth holds Markus for CGII to kick, but of course Markus side steps and Pierroth gets kicked low. Body check for CGII - will Markus splash her? Yes. Small package on Pierroth one two three. (4:49) Yay, two falls. Pierroth says something, Apolo responds. Satanico responds. CGII is getting checked on by a doctor. I think Satanico's point was that Pierroth was going to end up just like CGII - squashed out of existence. Markus challenges for a hair/hair match, wow.

Vignette: Zumbido and Loco Max talk - Zumbido mocks Loco for kissing up to Shocker. Loco is just proving himself, he says. I think Zumbido wants to go hang out but Loco has to do more Guapo U stuff.

2 Zumbido (c), Loco Max, Nosawa vs Olimpico (c), Safari, Ricky Marvin
01/31/03, Arena Mexico
75
1 trios 2:33 Marvin dropkick to the knee/Majistral Zumbido comments
2 3:33 Marvin cross armbreaker Zumbido
T 6:06 Tecnicos (2-0)

Notes: Zumbido points out his valet is hot. Thanks Zumbido! Loco Max has a helmet. Because he's loco. Nosawa still has the weird straight jacket mask. Safari is awful talkative on his way to the ring. Zumbido punks out Ricky Marvin before he gets to the ring, and we're off.

Rudo beatdown to start. Zumbido gets a top rope elbow smash for Ricky in the ring, while the other four start brawling outside of it. Back elbow on Marvin, and now the rest are into help. Zumbido takes some time to yell at the camera. Nice dropkick by Zumbido. Dive tease pose by Zumbido. Safari is in but he's quickly cornered. They spend some time figuring out what they're going to do on the corner spot, even though even I can see the corner clotheslines coming. Zumbido poses but Olimpico is in to attack him. He's quickly taken down and worked over. Corner clothesline for him? Nope, he dodges Zumbido's splash (with a little outside help from Ricky?) and clotheslines the other two. Safari gets thrown into a double dropkick, then the masked duo hit stereo topes on the two two minor rudos. Back in the ring, it's the Casas Special on Zumbido one two three. (2:33) Ricky's pumped. Zumbido's angry. Here's a replay of the double topes and the finish.

Ooooh, that Santo movie looks fab.

Vignette: Mascara Magica. He's alive! He'd also like us to go to the Arena Coliseo shows.

Okay, Nosawa and Olimpico will start fall two. Nosawa off the ropes, over, and hitting a clothesline. Celebrate, off the ropes, dropkick to the head since Olimpico is slow up. Nosawa does a little pose, while Loco struts on the apron. Olimpico taking some open hand slaps. Nosawa backing up and celebrating - let's notice that big tiger arm sleeve on the rudo referee's (probably the referee with Tigre in his name that I'm blanking on, duh) arm for some reason. Olimpico's turn it around in the meantime - open hand slaps, sliding under a whip and pulling Nosawa down by the hair. Big back elbow by Olimpico and a clothesline to take Nosawa out. Pose, tag to Safari kinda misses but that's good enough. Safari in, Loco Max charges him but it doesn't appear to work that well. Loco coming at with slaps now, but a clothesline is ducked and Safari chops him down. Safari working him over, armflip takeover, avoiding a couple of charges and hitting the monkey flip. Loco Max charges and gets a big backdrop. Slam. Handstand - headbutt drop? That's odd. Safari's now working over Loco in the corner - chops, corner whip, reversed, Loco charges, Safari moves, Loco almost topes the corner post. That was messy. Zumbido and Marvin in, Ricky charging but missing on a dropkick and landing in the corner. Zumbido stomps him down. Now it's a chop fight, but Zumbido knocks him down with a right hand. Whip, clothesline flips out Marvin. Zumbido firmly in control. Corner whip, Zumbido quickly sandwiches him with a clothesline and gets to taunting. Boot the to the face. Picking up Ricky by the hair - fireman's carry and forward drop, stomp, and going up - top rope moonsault Ricky moves, Zumbido lands on his feet, Ricky misses a clothesline, Zumbido's clothesline is caught and Marvin swings around into the armscissors takedown into a cross-arm breaker - referees IMMEDIATELY call for the bell, I don't know that Zumbido could've possibly gave that quick. (3:33) Whatever the case, Ricky wins two straight falls over Zumbido, and Olimpico carries him around on his shoulders. Tecnicos were the better looking team going into this, but that really didn't come into play. Nosawa's yelling at Zumbido, and Zumbido's out - big right hand to Marvin. Olimpico and Safari try to keep the rudos away from Marvin but Zumbido get sin another stomp. That was a nice punch. Here's a replay of the final sequence. That jumping armscissors into a cross arm-breaker may be called the Ricky Special if someone doesn't save me with a better name.

Zumbido's got the microphone - he wants a rematch. Against Marvin. Hair vs Hair! Olimpico and Safari like the idea - what about Ricky? For the people, sure, why not. Zumbido makes another run at Marvin, but Ricky's too far away and seeing him coming this time. So I guess we've got ourselves a hair match.

Vignette: Dr. Wagner and Black Tiger are talking in a Doctor's Office. Tiger knows Spanish this week. Wagner's eyeballs almost pop out of his mask at one point. I think they talk about the next match a bunch. They're still not fans of the Black Warrior.

3 Dr. Wagner Jr. (c), Black Tiger, Mascara Ano 2000 vs Mr. Niebla (c), Mascara Magica, Villano III
01/31/03, Arena Mexico
81
1 trios 2:39
2:40
Wagner sit down powerbomb Niebla
Ano step over armbar Magica
Acceptable slightly uppercard midcard match that has little meaning. Extremely painful looking finish by Wagner.
2 1:14
1:20
Villano III sunset flip Tiger
Rings of Magica on Ano
3 3:36 Wagner Driver on Niebla
T 7:36 Rudos (2-1)

Notes: Tecnicos punked out in the entryway. Oh no, Mascara Ano vs Mascara Magica - and yet, neither has a mascara! Magica, who appears to still exist, is wearing those Guapo U overalls.

Beatdown to start, you know. Villano II is wearing a black dominated outfit. We look at the announcers for a bit for some reason. Magica's taking his beatdown turn - there's a double leapfrog for no reason. The forced headstand to set up a Ano dropkick to the face is nice, at least. Niebla's turn, drop toe hold, camel clutch, running running running dropkick to the face. Wagner sure likes to go a long ways on those. Anyway, Magica stumbles into position, and there's Tiger with the 080 - I forget to call this right last week when Marvin did it. Niebla kinda turns away before it hits, eh. Villano III back in, I think we're going to finishes. Tiger and Ano are waiting for Wagner to get done beating Niebla right in their place path so they can whip Villano already. Here we go - corner whip, corner clothesline, corner jumping side kick, corner assisted high dropkick. Ano slams and elbow drops III  before he can get out. Is anyone gonna get in? Not if Ano keeps kicking them. Black Tiger pulls out the double jump suicide plancha because he can. Magica back in and getting beat by the two rudos who are standing - big inverted atomic drop by Niebla. Wagner setting up Niebla and there's a sit down powerbomb one two three. (2:39) Ano gets a step over armbar submission on Magica at almost the same time, and there's fall one. (2:40)

Picking up right where we left off - Villano II takes a backdrop as we start. It takes quite a bit of communication for them to set up a double corner whip, then Villano III goes to side step the charge but Mascara Ano dropkicks him in the back anyway. Odd. Now they have Mascara do another one, and this time, III gets out of the way and Ano gets crotched. Tiger tries a dropkick and ends up kicking his partner. Tecnicos come back is on - Niebla sneaks up on Wagner to slap him in the back of the head, then hits a over the corner post tope seconds later! Villano III hits a nice swinging DDT on Tiger, and Magica - misses a corner charge. Eh. He does reverses a win later, but it's Villano III who gets the first pin - victory roll into a sunset flip one two three. (1:14) And Magica follows with the Rings of Magica soon after. (1:20) Niebla slaps the crud out of Tiger for good measure. That was a nice tope, let's see it again. Watch Magica and Ano change direction on the whip as not to run over Villano III and Black Tiger.

Final Fall. The color of that top that valet is wearing makes it look completely non-existent during her walk. It's also tight enough that it might as well be non-existent. Anyway, the wrestling, what about that. Villano III and Mascara Ano to start - Mascara with a kick, crucifix lift but Villano armdrags out. Armdrag (slow), charge, Mascara waves him by Villano to the second rope and manages a bodyscissors off. Villano blocks the right hand and hits a better stunner than the last one we saw. Villano celebrates and Ano isn't moving all that much - they have to check if he's still with us. He manages to roll out, and we've got Tiger and Magica now. Tiger is not pleased with the crowd, and less so at missing a corner dropkick. Now it's magica's turn to go to the second rope, pulling off a headscissors, to twist Tiger. Charge gets Magica on the apron, but he forearms Tiger way, then blocks a Tiger forearm and hits another one. Tiger charges, backdropped to the apron, Magica charges , but slide under and drops Tiger chin first on the apron. They exchange slaps but the crowd (eventually) focuses back on the ring, where Wagner and Niebla are going at it. Our shot lingers on other things, though. When we're back with them, Wagner has hit a back elbow but is taking a monkey flip into the ropes. Niebla gets the crowd behind them, charges, and is backdropped but lands back on his feet. Wagner manages to shoulderblock him but gets the handspring elbow and a big slap to the floor. Ano into clothesline him and end that. Corner whip, Niebla kips up, Tiger slaps him but Niebla manages to fall back into a reverse roll up - Tiger with a big boot to break that up, Magica with a clothesline for Ano, Tiger attacks him. Tiger with a corner whip for Magica, Niebla backdrops him up and Magica pulls of a headscissors on Tiger to take him out. Ano in but he gets dropped by Villano and then a high one form Magica. VIllano TOPE! He gets his feet caught up in the ropes but manages to recover. Mascara waits for Villano III to get a hold of Tiger, then starts running - but he topes VIllano! Ano pulled his partner out of the way! Niebla manages a jumping back elbow on Wager in the ring, but he opts to go up - missile dropkick to the back of the head connects. Niebla says he wants to end this and he's going up again - top rope dive isn't close and Niebla aborts it with a roll - Wager pushes him in the corner, Niebla kips up, Wagner catches him on his shoulder - WAGNER DRIVER. He's dead. One two three. (3:36) Replays. Niebla has to be checked on, because he seemed to land right on his head.

Spectacular Moments: You think he's going to do a wacky armdrag flip, but no he planchas the outside. There's Pierroth getting pulled by the belt around his neck, drawing a SHOCKING DQ. Shocking that they finally got around to it. Looks like one of the Stones got dropkicked on his way off the top rope. Here's the wacky double submission GdI pulled off last week. And the Rudo move of the match was Rey's smart cheating.

Vignette: Shocker and Mascara Magica talk. Probably about the high amount of Mascara Magica in the show. Also, about a list of what the Guapo U guys are doing. Lots of lap around the top of Arena Coliseo. Ricky Marvin asks us to vote for him. We look at all the guys left - down to 8. Whoops, I guess Zumbido still is in it - he's just too cool to wear the t-shirt and not fight his classmates. Zumbido tell he's good. Here's some ring training - ah, special guest this week is Dr. Wagner Jr. Or maybe this is a best of thing and that's why we're seeing 10 seconds each bit.

4 GdI (Ultimo Guerrero (c), Rey Bucanero, Tarzan Boy) vs Vampiro (c), Shocker, Atlantis
01/31/03, Arena Mexico
85
1 trios 3:04
3:24
triple submission on three guys
GdI DQ (not breaking soon enough)
Annoying first fall finish telegraphed the two fall status. Another solid encounter, but doesn't stand out over any of them.
2 5:20
5:55
Vampiro KOs Tarzan (kick to the head)
Shocker inside cradle Ultimo
T 9:19 Tecnicos (2-1)

Notes: For all matches, they show clips of the match before hand to get you hyped up for it. But for this one, for whatever reason, they showed clips from last week. They did this during the intro, making me wonder if I got the same episode twice, but no. It's very odd.

This is one of the classic GdI entrances - they all come out in football jerseys and helmets and such. I'm guessing Tarzan and Ultimo are wearing the jerseys of some Mexican team, but Rey is wearing...a Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey. (Mike Alstott.) All the helmets are knockoff TB, beautiful. They do a little dance on stage, then the normal dance in the ring before butting heads. Rey throws a football at the crowd. Very well done. Vampiro comes to the ring not tentative, but ready for the inevitable punk out and probably thinking about doing it before GdI has a chance - yep, he goes after Rey before he even gets off the jersey, and Tarzan has to duck in to save his partner.  Shocker and Atlantis speed up the process a little bit this week, but they're not running to the ring or anything. Of course, they've got the mascot blocking their way. Hahahahaha, Ultimo just speared Shocker with the helmet still on! That's using your head! And then he did it again! Sign this man up! I see Middle Linebacker potential here.

Beatdown in progress. Ultimo knocks Shocker around the ring - Rey's in to help. Double whip, double boot for him. More posing as Shocker is thrown out. Everyone pick a corner to stand on. Atlantis in - double whip, Ultimo clothesline, Tarzan takes him and does something but we're looking at Shocker. Rey with - hey, that's Sliced Bread #2! Watching his tapes, I see. Shocker brought back in, but getting little offense. Double whip, waved by, flipped to his feet, and hold him so Ultimo can clothesline him back out. Vamp is in and Rey charges to take him down with a forearm. Double whip, waved by, drop toe hold, by Ultimo, and Ultimo and Rey hit their wheel kick/drop toe hold Total Elimination variant. Tarzan Boy sets up on the second rope and the other two get Vamp up for him - triple superbomb! They're not done - Vamp is stomped out of the ring, and Tarzan goes out after him. Ultimo and Rey beat the other two in the ring meanwhile - double corner clotheslines, they're whipped into each other and taken down. This week, they grapevine Shocker and Atlantis' legs together, and Rey does a neck crank armbar on Atlantis while Tarzan and Ultimo gives Shocker a double cross arm breaker. That looks quite painful. (3:04). GdI take their time letting go and Rey has to be forced off - wait, they're reversing it? NO! (3:24) QUE HORRIBLE! GdI pacify themselves by beating up Vamp some more but they might have realized what happened. Tarzan rudely introduces Vamp to back of one of those wood seats, which looks good but can't feel that way. Here's the double triple submission. I can't believe they over turned that.

I got a feeling that we're only going two falls now. Beatdowns rarely go two finishes and this one is still on. Tarzan is still beating Vamp in the crowd, so Ultimo and Rey beat up the other two in the ring. Perhaps I spoke too soon - while Rey hooks on a submission on Atlantis and goes for the mask, Ultimo quickly loads Shocker up on the second rope and forearms him hard. Ah, Ultimo backs off the ropes (thought he might go for his finish and hangs Shocker in the Tree of Woe to stomping. Rey's almost got the mask but Atlantis is fighting. Rey gives up just to stomp and punch Atlantis out of the ring. I think Tarzan is introducing Vamp to the seats, one by one. He relents, only so Ultimo can hit a sliding dropkick on Vamp. GdI are celebrating in again. Shocker back in and gets a double corner whip, but he's out and big booting Ultimo. Yep, comeback is on and it's hectic - I believe Rey gets posted here and Vamp takes it to Tarzan on the floor. Ultimo hides up the ramp to prevent more kicks to the face. Shocker charges him but doesn't' actually lave the ring, so Ultimo's okay. Camera focuses on those two although it looks like Vamp is having a heck of a time beating up Tarzan. Now Ultimo and Shocker are going - Ultimo off the ropes, over and hitting a clothesline. He yells at the rowdy tecnico fans, then turns around - off the ropes, clothesline misses and he takes a dropkick to the head. Shocker yanks at the mask! Soccer kicks to the back! Mask beal! That's sturdy construction to not rip there. Ultimo is coming back with chops, corner whip, Shocker side steps the charge and Ultimo takes the Zumbido knee bump to the floor (but looking a lot less staged - probably because they didn't telegraph it till the last second). Shocker goes for what appears to be a dive tease, but we cut to the crowd instead of seeing all of it. Vamp wants in - and Tarzan is in for his side. Tarzan misses a clothesline on the first try, then hits one which they both kinda sell. ODD. They totally weren't sure what the other guy was going to do leading into the collision. After a pause, they recover - Tarzan with a corner whip, corner clothesline, corner whip, corner charge meets boot and Vamp hits the corner clothesline.  RUNNING POWERBOMB! Big powerslam. Vamp looks at the crowd, looks at Tarzan. Waiting for Tarzan to get up - Tarzan (slowly) charges and gets a backdrop to the floor. Pescado to take him out. Atlantis in and pumped - Rey is, um, not in and trying to get away. Now he's back - off the ropes, they avoid each other till Rey takes a monkey flip. How about another? Good. Tilt-a-whirl backbreaker! Tilt-a-whirl backbreaker! Rey crawls on his back out ASAP. Tarzan in - boot the the midsection sends Atlantis to the apron, but he chops Tarzan away - somersault bodyblock apron dive! Vamp's got Tarzan now -w hip, reversed, hiptoss is blocked, Vamp steps out and hits a hard kick to the shoulder? Both refs sell it like Tarzan's KOed and done - look back quick, we were supposed to think it hit the head. I guess that's really a KO Kick. (5:20) Shocker and Ultimo in now, as Tarzan is rolled to the outside and Vamp steps out. Crowd is hot for this encounter. Start plays out like the ultimate confrontation last week -  chop battle with, Ultimo missing one and Shocker coming back with jabs. This time, Ultimo ducks the big right hand, Ultimo's clothesline is blocked, Shocker goes for the Circuit Breaker, Ultimo starts to reverse it to his own, Shocker slips down for a inside cradle one two THREE! (5:55) HE HAD TIGHTS! HE HAD oh Shocker just tripped while celebration, he's that happy. He was climbing the corner and kinda of crotches himself. Shocker makes "I want the belt" motions. Outside, Vamp makes sure Tarzan earned that concussion with another kick to the head. That's not nice of him. Atlantis makes a "I want the belt" motion too - what belt is that? The tags? NO. Shocker gets the mic and verbalizes what he's signaling. I'm not sure if Ultimo accepts, but he does try punking out Shocker which just leads to him getting booted and the fight restarted.

Next Week: Rayo de Jalisco Jr. Shocker, Vampiro, Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Pierroth, Tarzan Boy, Felino, Ricky Marvin (how about a shot where he's actually standing in the light?), Juventued Guerrera and much more. I wonder if we'll get this match for three weeks?

Breakdowns: 4 Matches (27:18) about 30.3% of showtime (1:30);
Average Match Rating 74
Overall Match Rating: approximately 76
4 Trios
3 Tecnico over Rudo wins, 1 Rudo over Tecnico wins
3 Straight Fall Victories (1, 3, 4)
Show Assessment: Solid if not noteworthy show, though a lot of short fall matches

Closing Notes:

1. This was the match they seemed to transition Vamp from Rey to Tarzan Boy. I think.
2. Pretty much sucks that Veneno turns off-screen, and has to wait to get actual revenge on Pierroth.
3. It'd be alright if they just wanted Markus to be the first one to get revenge on him, but...
4. That was about as piledrive-y as the Wagner Driver could be. Yet no DQ.
5. I'm really looking forward to Zumbido/Ricky Marvin
