Your new CMLL Super Light

Your new CMLL Super Light Heavyweight Champion is – NJPW-LA’s Rocky Romero? Rocky and Volador Jr. were the final two survivors of the 9/5 Cibernetico, and the guy who’s was supposed to be wrestling his last match for CMLL next week won one of their belts.

I’m guessing that this whole title, or at the very least the first champion, was to help cement whatever arrangement NJPW, the LA Dojo and CMLL have. Even if Rocky never defends the title in Japan, just being mentioned as champion brings attention to that connection. If they really wanted to just reward the Spectacular Moments crew, they could’ve just moved one of the many floating titles – Dr. X’s Mexican Welterweight and Felino CMLL Welterweight would be my two picks – instead of creating another one. I’m sure someone in CMLL will eventually win the SLH title, but maybe not soon and maybe that wasn’t the point of creating it.

I’m no NJPW expert, but I wonder if he’ll be able to succsefully defend it in Japan. Thinking about the Pitbull’s status last time in Japan, I’m only seeming them as higher than Taguchi and maybe equals to Inoue in the Junior ranks. Maybe that’ll change?

They could always run an angle that has Rocky returning sometime soon after this week (which was his announced last date in for the time being)

Final Card for the (latest) 70th Annivesery Show [* – my guess]
– Tarzan Boy vs Shocker* in a hair/hair match
– Pierroth* vs Violencia in a hair/mask match
– Hijo Del Perro Aguayo and Negro Casas vs Ultimo Guerrero and Rey Bucanero (c) * for the CMLL Tag Team Champions
– Havana Brothers vs Ricky Marvin/Volador Jr/Virus *
– Rayo de Jalisco/Atlantis/Super Porky * vs Dr. Wagner Jr./Cien Caras/Emilio Charles
– Felino/Sagrado/Angel Azetca * vs Averno/Mephisto/Arkangel

I think most of the people I’ve seen picking see new tag team champions, but I can’t bear to even consider that. You know it’s a big show when that group is working second from the bottom. I don’t think it gets much bigger than the battle of the Angels. Or maybe not.

Bob Barnett was correct – the new Galavision lucha sched took effect this week. However, in moving CMLL to Sunday’s (where it shouldn’t be any more clipped than what airs on Televisa – which is a problem with Televisa), they managed to skip a week in taping and the Heat/Wagner match I was looking forward to. I’ve barely watched it, but it sounds good and I’ve heard good things, so the fact that they’re not repeating lucha any more is kinda annoying.
