Zambrano looks forward to opening day

“The one who invented the light [bulb] tried 2,000-something times, and he finally did it,” Zambrano said. “We have light because somebody thought about doing that. … I don’t want to spend 2,000-some times to win the first game on Opening Day, but I will do it this year and go from there.”

Fukudome in the house (note the first official 2008 appearance of Paul Sullivan snark)

Kosuke Fukudome was welcomed to the Cubs clubhouse Friday morning by wacky pitcher Carlos Zambrano, who was wearing a jersey with Fukudome’s number 1 after slipping a No. 11 jersey into the Japanese star’s locker.

Zambrano told Fukudome that the pitcher was “the real No. 1,” though in reality, we all know Zambrano is only No. 1 in walks allowed and punches thrown at teammates.

Eventually, Zambrano took off the jersey and handed it to Fukudome, who quickly learned he had been Punk’d. Fukudome smiled all the way through the prank, as the Japanese media horde, along with several Chicago TV stations, recorded every second.

Santana’s trade to the Mets may mean Z is no longer the best Venezuelan pitcher in the NL, but he’s got a tight grip on most insane. This should be a fun season.

Anyway, I wouldn’t actually mind Fukudome third, especially with the Roberts trade stalled. You could do something like this

1) Soriano (assuming he’s stuck there)
2) Lee (OBP!)
3) Kosuke
4) A RAM
5) DeRosa
6) Soto
7) Theriot
8) Pie

It doens’t matter if Theriot doesn’t return to early season form or Pie bounces back, because they’re not making outs between the best guys. If Brian Roberts ever did become a Cub, I’d put him second, Lee 4th, and slide everyone else down a spot. I’m not thinking too much about that deal, though, because it seems totally stalled.

Reality is Soriano, Theriot or DeRosa, Lee, Ram, Kosuke, Soto, DeRosa or Theriot, Pie as the opening day lineup, but it’s nice that Kosuke wants to bat third.

(The Dempster thing was totally overblown. How dare an athlete – or whatever Ryan is – suggest his group is going to succeed.)

(so I bought this last spring, and found it under a pile of stuff a while back.)

Like the other Michael Lewis books I’ve read, this was a quick entertaining read. It just took a while – reading books during lunchbreaks is doubly frustrating when you realize you’d just need an evening to finish them, but then you’d have nothing for lunch.

It felt like two stories threaded together – a story about Michael Oher and a story left tackles. By thte end of the book, Oher had only played left tackle in one season, in high school, and was yet to start there at college. You had to explain why the left tackle had become so important to explain why many (though not all) people cared about Michael Oher coming their way and leading their path. It felt like book should’ve ended with Oher in the NFL, rather than another reminder he one day would.

Like in other Michael Lewis narratives, criticisms towards the main characters seem to only exist to be quickly dismissed. Another author could’ve done a whole book on Oher’s path to NCAA eligibility and how much of it actually benefits Michael. His adoptive family proudly gamed the system to Michael’s advantage, and someone else might have questioned what the means rather than treating it as a entertaining farce.

The recruiting section was more interesting than the info about Michael’s past – maybe it’s because so much of it came so late, after the rest of the story had moved on. The background on the history of the left tackle was good stuff.

If you’re interested in football, or haven’t read a story about recruiting in an NCAA revenue sport, this is a good read. It’s something I probably would say to borrow rather than buy, but then I don’t reread a lot of stuff and think I’m always dumb to buy it and leave it on the shelf to die. And now I’m trending into another post.

how to waste $16 in twelve steps

1) put Final Fantasy X-2 on your Gamefly queue, just to fill out the list
2) let it move up the list until Gamefly jumps over two (2!) other games to pull it for you
3) play the opening stage of the game
4) realize your heart has gone on from this particular story
5) realize characters upgrade their abilities based on what dress they wear
6) sit in stunned silence about the course of events leading you to play video game dress up
7) realize you are actually not 14 year old girl (ignoring blog post to the contrary)
8) immediately stop playing game
9) let game sit next to PS3 for weeks while attempting to convince yourself “It’s a Final Fantasy game, it’s gotta be better”
10) become irrationally angry at the game for not being better, while continuing not to actually play for it
11) eventually look at your credit card bill and remember not playing games cost just as much as playing them
12) throw the game in the return envelope when you’re heading to the post office for something else.
(bonus: go buy Burnout Paradise and regret not having gotten that much sooner.)

There’s a longer post about playing older Final Fantasy games on my DS that should’ve been written months ago, but it didn’t quite happen. Maybe I’ll get it out of my head at some point.

Gamefly sent me a Warcraft Free For 15 days for DVD. For my own sanity, I’m not sure if I’m going to open the envelope.

on the shelves

* Devil May Cry 4 (gamestats.com) (and there’s a collectors version as well) – action slasher. Reviews say it’s a return to form of the original game (avoiding the problem of the two previous sequels.) It’s got the repetitive problems you’d expect from the fourth game in a series, but it still looks good (in some levels) and plays fun. The main character from the previous game is reduced to a cameo…until you beat the game and get the option to play thru it as him instead. PS3 requires a lengthy install before you get going, but then plays close to the XBOX360.

* Turok (gamestats.com) – dinosaur hunting with guns. There’s an unusual amount of variance in reviews. 1UP says the game seems unfinished (and the PS3 version more so, of course.) Play Magazine is joyous over the ability to shoot dinosaurs (and notes this is just a second tier FPS in the levels without them.) Maxim gives it a 2/5, but I’m not linking to Maxim.

If you buy either game from Circuit City, you get a $10 gift card.

I almost lost my mind when I heard it might snow three more times in the next seven days, though it looks like it’s down to “maybe raining twice”. I can deal with that, for a while.

note to people who desire less anguish than I go thru: if you’ve been having problems with Pillar Box type sidebars on burnt DVDs and you want to see if you’ve figured out the problem, DO NOT USE A PS3 TO CHECK. It refuses to stretch the video, so those pillar boxes will be there regardless and if you’ve forgotten this, you’ll have a hard time to realizing you’ve solved the problem. A really hard time, until you think to just use a normal DVD player.

So obvious. So dumb. So happy this is over and I can start burning things again.

early leader for best inter-promtoional feud of ’08

(and now I’ve become a blog that posts videos and expects you to watch them. so sorry.) If a certain boxing match got many words in non-boxing newsletters about the parallels in building up a battle, I think this feud deserves 18 pages. I’d pay $40 for the payoff (if they got some writers.)
