Out of Arizona

Mar
30

So, they’re out of Mesa, and here’s what we got.

CF Soriano SP Z! RP Cotts
LF Murton PH Floyd SP Lilly RP Guzman
1B D Lee SP Marquis RP Wuertz
3B A Ram SP Hill RP Ohman
RF Jacque OF Ward SP Miller RP Eyre
CA Barrett CA Blanco RP Howry
2B DeRosa UT Theroit CL Dempster
SS Iztirus SS Cedeno

That’s about what I expected, with Cedeno being the only spring training surprise and Guzman ending up with Wood’s spot. Despite the lack of activity (or things interesting enough for me to write about, apparently), I think we did learn a few things from Spring Training.

When they said “we’re prepared to start the season without Wood or Prior“, they were actually not full of crap: In years past, Mark Prior has a spot carved out for him unless someone blows everyone away. Wade Miller was just eh, but eh was better than Prior, and they gave him no benefit of the doubt. Mark Prior may have been the last one to figure it out, but the Cubs weren’t going to give him a spot just for being Mark Prior any more.

Hopefully Prior gets it together in AAA (and I’m thinking road trip to Des Moines to see it – just because we all need to spend an afternoon in Des Moines at some point in our lives), but even if something oes wrong with the rotation in the first few weeks of the season, I’m not sure Prior gets the call – Guzman seems to be ahead of him as well. Prior’s starting from square one and has to earn his way back. If he does, great, and if he doesn’t, the Cubs are not bound to AAA pitcher.

Wood wasn’t making this team out of camp, injury or not. Trying to fight that, and pitching in back to back games only to get injured proved the club would’ve been right to leave him behind. They can’t stash him in AAA like Prior, but I’m sure there’s a depth chart in Jim Hendry’s office that has Rocky Cherry (and maybe others) ahead of Wood right now. And Eyre or Howry are much more likely to take over the closer role this year.

The Closer problem will catch the off guard: There was more talk about Dempster being a Ninja than Dempester being an effective closer this year. It was just as if they expected Ryan to snap back to 2005 without any adjustments. Either they know something we don’t about why he completely imploded to end last season and it’s been just as secretly fixed, or they’re in for a shock when Ryan’s not a good pitcher, as he’s been most of his career.

The end of the pen will be the glaring weakness, and the place they’ll try to improve in a trade by the end of the season.

The Cubs want to see how good (bad) the OF defense is before making a move: I’ve had a hard time trying to explain this since the last cuts were announced, but leaving a defensive outfielder off the bench means to me that they’re closer to making a deal. if you had Pagan around, you could just pan on making defensive subs every time the Cubs are up and it’s late – you have a method of Making Do, and you’ll get along that way. No backup outfielder – Ward and Floyd are glorified pinch hitters and Theroit has no experience – means Murton, Soriano and Jacque have either get it together or force a change. There’s no in between.

If Jacque batted right handed, he’d be batting right handed in a different city right about now: The lack of other left handed bats in the lineup is the only reason they didn’t flip Jones, move Soriano to RF and put Pie in CF. That’ll be the setup in 2008 (even though Jacque is signed for that year), it’s just a matter of when they’ll make that switch.

the kids will play: Cliff Floyd hit some home runs late, but he was so behind everyone, he never really seriously competed with Murton for the starting job, and may not start much at all unless his mobility improves. Rich Hill had a starting job the moment he came into camp and could focus on getting ready for the season. They seem to be in love with Theroit and will try to force some time for him. Even Ronny Cedeno seems to have confidence back; there’s no way he would’ve made this team if Dusty was still around. They might have even been willing to let Angel Guzman steal a rotation spot if he finished off a bit better.

ignore all winter promises about who will play where: When Mark DeRosa was signed, the Cubs vowed he’d only play second. He’s played a little third in a camp, but much more promising is him playing a bit of RF. On paper, the best left handed batting lineup has DeRosa in RF, Theroit at 2B, and Jacque on the bench, waiting to kill the first left specialist who comes in. It appears they might go back on their word to put that lineup out on the field, and I’ll accept that dishonestly. (Hope Mark does too.)

Similarly, if Soriano is bad in CF, the “we’ll stick Alfonso in one place and not move him” promise goes out of the window. I’m sure they’ve got the speeches ready in the back fo the head, “We just wanted him to be more comfortable out there, he would’ve gotten the hang of and still might, but we felt we were rushing him”.

Don’t get attached to any batting order: Lee will be 3rd, Ram will be 4th, and Soriano will probably be first. Besides that, it’s going to take a while to figure. It looks like they’re going to play match ups and give plenty of people chances in the soft 2 spot, and that’ll ripple the rest of the lineup. Anything that gets us away from Dusty’s “if I’ve got the the shortstop batting second – even if it’s back up no hit shortstop” lineup.

If Cesar and Ronny struggle, I like to think there’s a chance Z! bats eight. I’m hoping so.

Even with only 5 guys, the bench is more useful than last year: For one, we’ve actually got people we can use as DHs, which is a nice change. Unless there’s big injuries or both Floyd and Ward go John Mabry on us, we’ve got much better hitters on the bench. Everyone on the bench has some sort of point for being there, which is also a nice change.

We know all that…and I still have no feel how this is going to go. Lily moving to the NL Central should help his season, but who knows. Marquis couldn’t possibly be as bad as last season, but who knows. D Lee appears to be all the way back, but who knows.

I really really don’t want make picks or put down a number, but I can’t think of a better way to end this, so…

1) CUBS 87-75
2) Brewers
3) Astros
4) Pirates – yea, why not
5) Cardinals – it’s all falling apart this year. Everyone’s afraid to speak about how bad this team might turn out to be because they’re still in the World Series grace period, but this seems like a disaster season.
6) Reds

off topic: I have no idea what I’m doing as far as writing this season. Does anyone want what I did for last season? Do I? Kinda running out of time to decide this..

Heat 03/23 (457)

Mickie really hasn’t been in good matches which haven’t involved Trish, and this match with Victoria didn’t change that. I’d like to chalk it up to only irregularlly getting TV matches, but – you’d think they’re still working at house shows or before events or something, and this still isn’t very good.

She’s better than Shad! They don’t trust Shad to do anything, and yet, I get the feeling that if he could actually do anything at all, they’d push him thru the moon.

Joe Versus The World – 46: Justin Shapiro & Matt Foy [WrestleMania, XI-XXIII]

Mar

Justin Shapiro & Matt Foy return for part II of our Wrestlemania retrospective. We cover the highs and lows of XI-XXII, along with some thoughts on XXIII, plus shampoo, all I needed to know about race relations I learned from Triple H, the Wrestlemania legacy of Paul London, jerks in the crowd with dumbfounded expressions, barbarians with water bottles, Khali: color commentator, Matt gets, uh, excited after WM XX, I lean on the fast forward during the Iron Man match, and Justin gets peal harbored by Gorilla Monsoon. Bigger, badder, and better at a whopping 90 minutes!

Heat 03/16 (456)

Mar
20

If I write something on Saturday, why am I waiting till Tuesday to write this little blurb to point to it? I dunno. Questions like this, and how to sneak in a link to Albert Ching, Comic Book LA Beat Reporter, are the kinda of things that distract me when I’m busy and don’t get addressed when I’m not.

To be fair to me, this had a Duggan squash, a Cryme Tyme squash, and someone decided Eugene/Kenny was the kind of match that demands an eight minute rematch, so…no one’s missing anything.

Watching RAW, I was wondering how they possibly could manage to do a Heat this week, what with everyone on the Heat roster working RAW (Battle Royal, shaved head), but apparently they got to work twice on Monday. Lucky them.

Also, if Monday was the end of Eugene, I am so ready. If it was a test for Todd as ECW host, I’m okay with that.

stuck on the edge of my mind

Mar
13

So today, I’m stuck inside all day, and walk out to find 65 degree weather. That was bizarre. I swear it was snowing ten days ago.

As I write this around 11, I’ve seen this scroll on ESPNEWS twice

NCAAM
Wyoming expected to fire coach Steve McClain
Wyoming fires coach Steve McClain

The first blurb right after each other. I guess they want to make sure you know what’s up with the men’s basketball program in Wyoming. Maybe for Air Force’s benefit?

random stuff while watching RAW

– Cryme Tyme won the #1 contendership on Janurary 7th. That’s, uh, 64 days ago. TWO MONTHS.

It’s not like the tag team titles haven’t been defended.

01/29: HBK/Cena b Rated RKO (win the titles)
02/26: HBK/Cena b Rated RKO
03/12: HBK/Cena b TWGTT
03/12: HBK/Cena b Cade & Murdoch
03/12: HBK/Cena b MNM

Five different teams have gotten shots before JTG and Shad! I hope this is just an ingenious plan to keep delaying their title shot til WrestleMania, and it’s a secret plan so they can’t tell anyone. That makes sense.

– Is Edge hurt? Perhaps he’s just speaking up for minorities! If only he didn’t hate Cryme Tyme. Edge’s attempt to be the evilest man ever is fun to watch.

– The thing about Kane and Khali in a chain match is it wouldn’t really hurt their mobility.

TV shows I’m watching

24: I was thinking they just brought back the president and first lady just to live off what they did last year a bit. The impact on the main story was a bit much – the first lady relationship was a nice call back to last season, but everything worked out too quickly at the end to believe – but the stabbing totally made it worth it. I thought Gregory Itzin was only signed for three episodes, and I wouldn’t mind leaving his death/non-death being up in the air. No need to kill of yet another president.

Congrats to Jack for making it out of an hour without physically torturing someone.

TAR: I have absolutely no idea who’s going to win here. I don’t think anyone does after that last leg. If they can get Midget and Me off the show – they’ve been close, but a non-elimination has to be coming up – this might be a really good ending.

Numbers: Last Friday’s show good – I always like episodes where a one episode character becomes reoccurring and where lines like “he picked the wrong computer geek to mess with” are said half kidding. The one three weeks ago, with Don in therapy and the rest of the team handling a kidnapping was awesome. Any show that does a real time format in 2007, and decides they’re not going to do 24, but instead a homage to Run Lola Run of all things, is going to make me go to the thesaurus and look up synonymys for great so I’m not repeating myself. It was the best episode I’ve seen. I don’t know if Numbers is actually an excellent show (probably not), or some show you should seek out if you’re not watching, but it’s a show I’m highly enjoying at the moment. The farther they’ve gone thru the season, the more I’ve liked it (like Psyche, which totally grew on me and was terrific by the end of the season.)

03/11 Spring Training Thoughts

Mar

I was watching Saturday’s game – Cubs/Royals, a world series preview if I’ve ever seen one – and I was utterly confused by the uniforms.

– why have both teams wear their blue uniform tops? That’s amazingly confusing.
– And they’re not even their actual road uniforms – they’ve got a weird white/red (or blue) stripe under the arm down the side. Is that some new heat vent?

I guess I could google it, but…the moment’s passed.

The one answer I got out of that game is Prior’s renting an apartment in Des Moines this year. Not an extended stay hotel, but something where he can camp out till All Star Break. Maybe by then, he won’t still be throwing 86 and maybe he’ll be able to control his fastball. No one’s saying he’s cut from the major league roster yet, but if he’s pitching in minor league games and he has minor league stuff, then he’s probably a duck. Or a Iowa Cub. Or whatever they AA team is called this year.

It looks like we’ve got 3 spots up for grabs, since Theroit’s made the team (and playing a bit of everywhere – he’s Neifi now, and I hope that’s a good thing)

SP5: Miller, Cotts, and Guzman’s the one they’re talking up. Unless Miller falls on his face, I think they’ll give him the chance to start the season, since that puts of the permanent decision. I’m still believing Miller’s done, but I’m not totally on the Guzman bandwagon yet.

Backup OF: It seemed to be Pagan almost by default, but he’s not coming off a good year and didn’t seem to be a good defender – BProspectus’ numbers argue the other way, but I think you could do better and need to do with what’s starting out there. Buck Coats isn’t much better, he’s a below average SS who got pushed to CF, but he’s hitting well enough to get a chance, and he’s still on the 40 man roster for some reason. Pie’s not here unless there’s an injury.

25th Man: Pinella talked about going with 11 pitchers, which would make this a reserve infielder (Cedeno? NO! Scott Moore?), but today he seems to have floated back to 12. Which would probably means Cotts or Wuertz, and both guys really should be making the team. You can’t do that with 12 unless Miller or someone else doesn’t, so 12 it is.

No feel for the batting order. No feel for the rotation – Z’s one, but the next four could be a jumble. I don’t think they’ll start setting it down till next week.

Heat #455

Aired 03/09. Val/Shelton felt like they were trying to remember a match they did, except they both didn’t remember the same parts of it. If they did it again a month, I think it’d be better.

I could stand going a long while without Eugene and Highlanders matches.

If Todd does end up with ECW, as the talk has been, at least Josh will be back around to be amusing.
